This 8 inch tile depicts a woman in noble dress playing a lyre, in a beautiful neoclassical style on a striking gold ground, surrounded by a mute blue border.
At nearly 150 years it is in a beautiful clean condition, the perfect decorative feature for modern and period properties looking to add vibrancy and charm.
We are also selling further sets of tiles in the same design. Each illustration is hand painted depicting various types of classical musicians in the same beautiful colours.
Some tiles in this series include scenes from Shakespeare and one illustrating 'Early English History'.
John Moyr Smith (1839-1912) & Classical Figures with Musical Instruments
This tile series titled 'Classical Figures with Musical Instruments' by Glasgow born artist John Moyr Smith dates to circa 1875-1890. You can currently find one example on display in the V&A Museum, London.
Made by Minton & Co, Stoke on Trent, these tiles were originally designed to decorate cast-iron grates that began to appear during this period.

Paola Paronetto
Paola Paronetto was drawn to the world of ceramics at a very young age, learning clay working techniques from the hands of master ceramists. Her free and inquisitive soul led her to experiment with different materials and expressive techniques, until her encounter with paper clay. The idea of a material that naturally evades the rules fascinates her. In the early 2000s, in her ceramic workshop in Porcia, where she still lives and works today, the "Cartocci" collection was born. Solid objects, yet as light and thin as paper where her complete creative world lies: the affinity with a technique that requires layering and waiting, the search for forms that allow themselves imperfections, her sense for the solidity of colour. Today her art work in paper clay travels the world, freely intertwining with contemporary art and design. They are exhibited in in select showrooms, galleries and museums (or museum shops) in Italy and abroad. They participate in the most important international design events, flirting effortlessly with other worlds. The Ille Arts gallery in New York and the Contemporary Ceramic Centre in London have dedicated a solo exhibition to Paola Paronetto. ADI Design Musem - Compasso d'Oro in Milan hosted her first anthological exhibition in Italy in 2021. Her work and her world of inspirations are collected in the photographic book 'Paola Paronetto. “Grimilde” is an artwork that addresses the dilemma of envy within the context of the seven deadly sins, through a representation that merges the wicked characters from fairy tales into a single figure. In it, there are recognizable references to Grimhilde, the witch from “Snow White”, the Queen of Hearts from “Alice in Wonderland,” and Cruella De Vil, all aimed at portraying envy in a world dominated by social media and the constant quest for approval and affirmation. The artwork is named after the evil queen from Snow White, and her figure is made evident by the turban that frames the face, emphasizing its features and wrinkled expression. The dress, with a black and white checkered pattern with red details, evokes that of the Queen of Hearts, as seen in the large red hearts decorating the crown, replacing the traditional acanthus leaves of typical Sicilian Moorish heads...
