From our Japanese collection, we are delighted to offer this Japanese Satsuma Vase by Kinkozan. The vase is potted in globular form with a tightly pinched neck and rolled top rim beautifully decorated with four highly detailed individual panelled scenes. The first a Geisha baring a gilt basket with her child playing with a fan infant of a gilt fence encompassing blossoming foliage and bamboo plants. The second scene depicts two birds, a Red Headed Japanese Wood Pigeon and a white dove in the foreground with a similar gilt fence with blossoming kiku flowers (chrysanthemums). The third scene is painted as a bustling village community with multiple figures going about their daily jobs, a central Palanquins can be seen with two figures carrying a seating figure. I.C.S. Art Deco Majolica Vase, Italy 1927-1940

Rare vintage ceramic vase features streamlined cylinder form with slightly flared out rim and graphic decor in off white, teal, black, and yellow palette. The main motif of abstract flowers on a branch, descending from a triangular structure, hand painted in monochromatic black glaze, is juxtaposed with the ombre off white and teal background and an abstracted flock of birds in shades of yellow. The sophisticated Art Deco style flowering branch, with contrasting, clearly defined, angular outline, is softened with rounded, Folk Art or Naive Art style, almost cloud-like bird motifs, asymmetrically placed on one side of the branch. The decor repeats on front and back sides of the vase with slight variations in colors and placements that are consistent with hand-painted nature of the piece. The vase retains obvious hand-formed concentric ridges throughout the whole body that add textural element to the piece and allow for slight pooling of the glazes. The bottom is concave and glazed in off-white, with the unglazed foot, showing pinkish beige clay; it is not a glaze defect, as it was left unglazed intentionally when the vase was placed in the kiln for firing.
The vase is signed on the bottom with "Italy I.C.S" and Industria Ceramica Salernitana company's fish mark. It is in good vintage condition with age-appropriate small losses on glaze of the rim and bottom that do not detract from the quality and artistic expression of the vase and can be repaired professionally; please see pictures.
I.C.S. was founded in 1927 by Berlin-born Moses Malamerson in Vietri Sul Mar on Amalfi coast in Italy. I.C.S quickly gained recognition by participating in multiple major European and American expositions and art competitions available, attracting many artists that were looking to escape the economic depression and political upheaval of 1930s. Scheurich originated from a joint venture initiated in 1928 by Alois Scheurich and his cousin Fridolin Greulich in the small town of Schneeberg, situated near the Czech border in Saxony. The venture involved the wholesaling of glass, porcelain, and ceramics. In 1938, the business was relocated to the market community of Kleinheubach in the northeast corner of Bavaria. Ten years later, the partners initiated the production of household ceramics, which were sold under the name Scheurich & Greulich. In 1954, the partnership was dissolved, and Alois proceeded to establish Scheurich GmbH & Co. KG proceeded to continue production independently.
In 1955, the celebrated designer Heinz Siery was recruited by Scheurich as the company's lead form designer. In addition to designing an extensive range of shapes, he played a pivotal role in developing a successful overarching production strategy. This strategy involved producing a wide array of simple forms that could be produced cheaply and decorated in a variety of glazes. This resulted in the creation of a diverse and economically adaptable range of pieces. This approach proved to be entirely successful, resulting in Scheurich's ascendency in the market by the late 1960s. The company's strategy of maintaining low prices in conjunction with an extensive range of appealing designs resulted in significant sales, with millions of units sold annually. The designs were adapted twice a year to align with changing consumer preferences.
Scheurich's product range included vases and flowerpots, in addition to ashtrays, piggy banks, candle stands, beer mugs, buffet clocks, wall reliefs and Christmas tree holders...
