The construction of Landshut began in 1204 under the rule of Duke Ludwig of Bavaria. It was a typical Wittelsbach founding town and marked a new form of territorial politics for the Bavarian dukes. From 1231, Landshut became the residence of the Wittelsbach dynasty and the capital of the Duchy of Bavaria until 1255. Due to the division of Bavarian lands, Landshut alternated between being a capital and a residential town. The town thrived thanks to its location on the Isar River and its strategic positioning along trade routes. By the 14th century, Landshut had developed its Gothic town center, which remained largely unchanged until the 19th century. During the period from 1392 to 1503, Landshut experienced a prosperous and politically important era under the rule of the three "rich" Dukes Heinrich, Ludwig, and Georg. So as I turned to gaze, where gleaming white, Half hid by shadowy trees from passers' sight, The Convent lay, one who had dwelt for long In that fair home of ancient tale and song, Who knew the story of each cave and hill, And every haunting fancy lingering still Within the land, spake thus to me, and told The Convent's treasured Legend, quaint and old: — Long years ago, a dense and flowering wood, Still more concealed where the white convent stood, Borne on its perfumed wings the title came: " Our Lady of the Hawthorns " is its name. Then did that bell, which still rings out to-day, Bid all the country rise, or eat, or pray. Before that convent shrine, the haughty knight Passed the lone vigil of his perilous fight; For humbler cottage strife or village brawl, The Abbess listened, prayed, and settled all. Young hearts that came, weighed down by love or wrong, Left her kind presence comforted and strong. Each passing pilgrim, and each beggar's right Was food, and rest, and shelter for the night. But, more than this, the Nuns could well impart The deepest mysteries of the healing art; Their store of herbs and simples was renowned, And held in wondering faith for miles around. Thus strife, love, sorrow, good and evil fate, Found help and blessing at the convent gate. Of all the nuns, no heart was half so light, No eyelids veiling glances half as bright, No step that glided with such noiseless feet, No face that looked so tender or so sweet, No voice that rose in choir so pure, so clear, No heart to all the others half so dear, So surely touched by others' pain or woe, (Guessing the grief her young life could not know,) No soul in childlike faith so undefiled, As Sister Angela's, the " Convent Child. " For thus they loved to call her. She had known No home, no love, no kindred, save their own. An orphan, to their tender nursing given, Child, plaything, pupil, now the Bride of Heaven And she it was who trimmed the lamp's red light That swung before the altar, day and night; Her hands it was whose patient skill could trace The finest broidery, weave the costliest lace; But most of all, her first and dearest care, The office she would never miss or share, Was every day to weave fresh garlands sweet, To place before the shrine at Mary's feet. Nature is bounteous in that region fair, For even winter has her blossoms there. Thus Angela loved to count each feast the best, By telling with what flowers the shrine was dressed. In pomp supreme the countless Roses passed, Battalion on battalion thronging fast, Each with a different banner, flaming bright, Damask, or striped, or crimson, pink, or white, Until they bowed before a newborn queen, And the pure virgin Lily rose serene. A wonderfully glazed, beautifully crafted, and classically shaped vase/vessel by renowned Canadian master potter Brother Thomas Bezanson (1929-2007). Brother Thomas studied design at Nova Scotia College in the late 40s and early 50s, It was during this time that he discovered a love for the ceramic art form. In 1959 he became a monk and joined the Weston Priory, Vermont, a community of Benedictine men. Here he continued his art while also pursuing a degree in philosophy. In 1978 he traveled to Japan where he met and worked with five Japanese potters, designated “Living National Treasures” by the Japanese government. These particular artists and the time spent with them deeply influenced his work and his thought. In 1985, he became artist-in-residence at Mount Saint Benedict Monastery in Erie, Pennsylvania, where worked until his death in 2007. Brother Thomas was universally known and esteemed for his mastery of complex glazes and his adaptation and application of traditional Chinese and Japanese pottery methods and materials. The vase features a sumptuous green glaze that absolutely radiates in the light. The work is signed by Brother Thomas with his traditional signature and cipher. A special piece. Would be a great addition to any Brother Thomas or Mid-Century pottery/ceramics collection or make for an eye catching stand alone accent work in about any setting. Karen Karnes (November 17, 1925 – July 12, 2016) was an American ceramist, best known for her salt glazed, earth-toned stoneware ceramics. Early life Karnes was born on November 17, 1925 in New York City,[2] where she attended art schools for children. Her garment worker parents were Russian and Polish Jewish immigrants, and the family lived in the Bronx Coops. Karnes applied for and was accepted to the High School of Music & Art. As a child she was surrounded by urban realities and visual influences, but she claims that her parents' old-world ideals kept her grounded. At Brooklyn College she majored in design and graduated in 1946. After graduating, she studied abroad in Italy, where she continued to study ceramics. After returning from Italy, Karnes began a graduate program at Alfred University, but left before completing her degree to work at Black Mountain College. Black Mountain College Karnes first encountered Black Mountain College in 1947, where she took a summer design class with Josef Albers. In 1952, she and her husband David Weinrib (whom she later divorced) moved down to North Carolina to become potters-in-residence at the Black Mountain College. While at Black Mountain College, Karnes and Weinrib became acquainted with Merce Cunningham and John Cage, and later lived with them at the Gate Hill Community.
