Hukin & Heath (active 1855 – 1953) Hukin & Heath was an important British manufacturer, active between 1855 and 1953, specializing in silver and electroplate. The company is best known for its skillfully manufactured reproductions of Persian and Japanese pieces, mainly silver and electroplated wares, that were produced under the guidance of Dr. Christopher Dresser. The production of the Hukin & Heath eastern-like pieces experienced its peak between the 1870s and 1880s. The business was established in 1855 by Jonathan Wilson Hukin and John Thomas Heath. The company entered the market as manufacturing silversmiths and electroplaters. The company’s silver mark was entered in 1875 in the Birmingham Assay Office, which was followed by the entry of the mark of the firm’s founders, Jonathan Wilson Hukin and John Thomas Heath, in 1879 in the London Assay Office. By that time, Hukin & Heath already had several showrooms at 19 Charterhouse Street, Holborn, and a workshop at Imperial Works, Great Charles Street, Birmingham. As for the company’s trade mark, it combines the initials H & H, standing for Hukin & Heath, that is accompanied by an eagle. An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Victorian English sterling silver claret jug, made by George Fox; an addition to our diverse wine and drinks related collection. This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver claret jug has a bulbous rounded knopped form onto a circular domed foot. The swept neck and body of the jug are embellished with chased decorated scrolling strapwork bordered panels incorporating fruit and foliate designs on a matte background, intersected by bead motifs accented with trellis ornamentation. The body of this impressive claret jug is further ornamented with chased decorated stylized leaf designs to the lower portion and spiraling stylized bird designs accented with rosette motifs to the main portion. The decoration to the main portion of the body incorporates a large vacant oval cartouche to either side. Each incurved portion of the knops are ornamented with a stylized egg decorated border and floral motifs. The flared rim to the lip of the jug is embellished with a broad band of applied ribbed decoration. This impressive jug is fitted with an exceptional cast S scroll handle with a figural ornamentation to the upper portion and a tapering rope twist design to the lower portion. The lower socket features a bifurcating scrolling design with stylized leaf terminals whilst the upper curved bifurcating socket is embellished with chased leaf designs. The opposing interior side of the lip, below the upper terminal to the handle, is ornamented with a chased decorated grotesque mask. The foot is embellished with embossed decoration depicting flowing water incorporating conical shells and dolphin designs. This is a very good hand-blown, English mid-Georgian Jelly glass, dating to the last quarter of the 18th century, circa 1780. These glasses are very collectable. It is made from English lead glass which is relatively heavy and has a soft grey colour. The glass has a bell bowl above a flattened cushion knop which forms a rudimentary stem. The stem leads to a conical foot having a rough snapped off pontil mark to the underside. There are no chips, cracks or any evidence of restoration. This magnificent antique William III Britannia silver tankard has a plain tapering cylindrical form onto a spreading collet style foot. The surface of this 18th century quart tankard is embellished with an impressive engraved leaf and floral bordered coat of arms depicting party per pale to the first a chevron between three lion's heads erased and to the second a bend raguly. The upper and lower portions of the body are encircled with bands of tooled decoration, with an applied moulded border to the upper rim. This antique quart tankard retains the original double stepped flat topped, hallmarked cover surmounted with an impressive volute scrolling thumbpiece. The cover is further ornamented with a band of tooled decoration to the rim accented with an applied shaped thumbpiece to the anterior edge. The hinge is decorated with ribbed ornamentation and retains the original pin. This antique Britannia standard silver tankard is fitted with an S-scroll handle ornamented with a plain rounded terminal. The spreading collet foot is encircled with a band of applied moulded decoration to the rim. Imperial quart = 2 pints/1.14 litres. Britannia silver - The Britannia silver standard of 958 (95.84% of fine silver), denoted by the icon of the seated Britannia holding an oval shield, was introduced by William III in 1697. This was to indicate the slightly higher standard of silver from sterling silver standard of 925 (92.5% of fine silver). The armourial bearings are those of the Wyndham and Penruddocke family, to commemorate the marriage of Henry Wyndham and Arundel Penruddocke on 11th September 1735.
