Neoclassical Serveware, Ceramics, Silver and Glass

NEOCLASSICAL STYLE

Neoclassical design emerged in Europe in the 1750s, as the Age of Enlightenment reached full flower. Neoclassical furniture took its cues from the styles of ancient Rome and Athens: symmetrical, ordered, dignified forms with such details as tapered and fluted chair and table legs, backrest finials and scrolled arms.

Over a period of some 20 years, first in France and later in Britain, neoclassical design — also known as Louis XVI, or Louis Seize — would supersede the lithe and curvaceous Rococo or Louis XV style.

The first half of the 18th century had seen a rebirth of interest in classical antiquity. The "Grand Tour" of Europe, codified as a part of the proper education of a patrician gentleman, included an extended visit to Rome. Some ventured further, to sketch the ruins of ancient Greece. These drawings and others — particularly those derived from the surprising and rich archaeological discoveries in the 1730s and ’40s at the sites of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum — caused great excitement among intellectuals and aesthetes alike.

Neoclassical furniture is meant to reflect both grace and power. The overall appearance of neoclassical chairs, tables and cabinetry is strong and rectilinear. These pieces are, in effect, classical architecture in miniature: chair and table legs are shaped like columns; cabinets are constructed with elements that mirror friezes and pediments.

Yet neoclassicism is enlivened by gilt and silver leaf, marquetry, and carved and applied ornamental motifs based on Greek and Roman sculpture: acanthus leaves, garlands, laurel wreaths, sheaves of arrow, medallions and chair splats are carved in the shapes of lyres and urns. Ormolu — or elaborate bronze gilding — was essential to French design in the 18th and 19th centuries as a cornerstone of the neoclassical and Empire styles.

As you can see from the furniture on these pages, there is a bit of whimsy in such stately pieces — a touch of lightness that will always keep neoclassicism fresh.

Neoclassical Luxury Italian Porcelain Tableware Set by Rigo & Cia
Neoclassical Luxury Italian Porcelain Tableware Set by Rigo & Cia

Neoclassical Luxury Italian Porcelain Tableware Set by Rigo & Cia

Located in MADRID, ES

Magnificent fine porcelain dinner service and/or decorative display ensemble, produced by the prestigious Rigo & Cia firm in Venice during the late 19th or early 20th century. This remarkable set stands out for its sumptuous Neoclassical and Romantic decoration, executed with a level of craftsmanship evocative of the great European manufactories such as Sèvres or Capodimonte. Among its most distinguished artistic and technical features is the central decoration, composed of exquisite gallant scenes inspired by the work of Angelica Kauffman, depicting muses, mythological figures, and bucolic scenes set within richly colored landscapes. The service is enhanced by luxurious finishes, including deep burgundy/red borders lavishly adorned with raised gilt decoration in intricate floral and geometric filigree. Each piece bears the authentic maker’s mark on the underside: “Rigo & Cia – Venezia,” a guarantee of Italian luxury craftsmanship of the period. Furthermore, every element constitutes an individual painted work of art, with numerous scenes signed by artists, attesting to their hand-executed nature and authorship value. The condition is of true display or museum quality. Particularly noteworthy is the preservation of the original raised gilt filigree, something extraordinarily rare to find on pieces more than a century old, showing only minimal wear and no loss of polychromy. Composition of the service (for four diners): The lot includes a complete selection intended for formal dining and presentation. Central piece: • Monumental ornamental urn/vase of large proportions, with gilt Empire-style handles, serving as the masterpiece of the ensemble. Soup service: • Large tureen with lid and gilt finials. • Medium-sized covered vegetable tureen. Table service: • 4 dinner plates. • 4 soup plates. • 4 dessert/appetizer plates. Serving accessories: • 1 gravy boat with integrated stand and original matching porcelain spoon. • 1 elevated fruit bowl or compote. • 3 serving platters (oval and circular, in varying sizes). • 1 large round serving platter. • 1 fluted platter for dessert presentation. • 2 porcelain knife rests...

Yeoward William "Crystal Collection" Pair of English Crystal Goblets
Yeoward William "Crystal Collection" Pair of English Crystal Goblets

Yeoward William "Crystal Collection" Pair of English Crystal Goblets

By William Yeoward

Located in Prato, Tuscany

We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. We have another goblet identical to these that we sell single (posted on 1stdibs). Iconic and precious crystal goblets; they have been made from the highest quality lead crystal with a thickness that is thick enough to allow them to be ground deeper than normal, which allows the light to reflect in a much brighter and more brilliant manner; for this to happen, the geometry of the grinding has also been specially designed and executed. The glasses are a delightful combination of intricate cuts and engravings and feature some of the most beautiful motifs of the 18th and 19th centuries. Every detail of the decoration, such as the glittering star wheel, is cut entirely by hand, with hours of specialized labor required to complete each piece achieving a very high standard of quality. The glasses were made in London (England) between 1995 and 1996 by the William Yeoward company, whose name they bear on the bottom (see photo), and are one of the most attractive designs in the "William Yeoward Crystal...

Wolfers Freres Neoclassical Large Silver Centrepiece 'tray & flowerbasket'
Wolfers Freres Neoclassical Large Silver Centrepiece 'tray & flowerbasket'

Wolfers Freres Neoclassical Large Silver Centrepiece 'tray & flowerbasket'

By Wolfers Frères

Located in Verviers, BE

Made of solid silver, both silver pieces are fully marked, 800 silver with the maker's mark. This substantial and beautifully-crafted neoclassical centrepiece was made in the 1920s and will look perfect on a hall/lobby table or in the dining room. The large silver tray is mounted on a wooden base and secured with brackets. The outside rail has a tube border with scallop shells. The polished surface of the silver tray is in very fine condition for its age and gives a good mirror to the light. The design motif is continued on the silver collar which slips over a copper liner. The copper liner-basket is cut to an exact outline and fit so that a floral arrangement can be executed elsewhere and then dropped into position. For convenience, this item comes with a cut crystal vase saint Louis of suitable height and shape which sits inside the copper lining. The crystal vase may be 'associated', it cannot be verified that it was originally supplied with the rest of the set, but it is of the right period and style. The Brussels firm of Wolfers Freres...
