Vintage hand-thrown bowl features complex Crater glaze in mocha and latte brown colors. Minimal color palette and streamlined shape of the piece allow the textured glaze with variations from semi-matte to high gloss to take the spotlight; slightly asymmetrical rim adds hand-crafted, Organic Modern mood to the bowl's design.
The bowl is personally signed by Douglas Ferguson on the bottom with his name and "Pigeon Forge Pottery".
The Crater glaze has become one of the most recognizable glazes made by the Pigeon Forge Pottery. Often commonly referred to as "Volcanic" or "Lava" glaze, the Crater glaze was developed and made in several colors. We are offering a vase and 4 more bowls in different shapes by Douglas Ferguson, done in variations of Crater glazes, in separate listings.
Douglas Ferguson (1912-1999) was an established Tennessee pottery artist; he received a degree in Art Design Studies from Mars Hill College and worked in the Ceramic Research Laboratory for the Tennessee Valley Authority in Norris, TN, from 1935 to 1947, where he experimented with local clays. In 1946 he started Pigeon Forge Pottery in an old tobacco barn with his wife Ruth and Ernest Wilson, his colleague at the Ceramic Research Laboratory. He formulated many of his own glazes, including crystalline and Crater glaze.
In 1957 he created the Clingman Dome tea set, named by Ferguson for the highest peak in the Great Smoky Mountains, which the state of Tennessee presented to Queen Elizabeth. Ferguson became a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild in 1948 and remained active until 1998, receiving Life Membership in 1991. He earned two awards from the Tennessee Arts and Crafts Festival in Nashville, received the Rotary Certificate of Distinguished Service, and was featured in books on Appalachian...

Iconic and precious crystal chalice; it has been made from the highest quality lead crystal with a thickness that is thick enough to allow it to be ground deeper than normal, which allows the light to reflect in a much brighter and more brilliant manner; for this to happen, the geometry of the grinding has also been specially designed and executed. The glass is a delightful combination of intricate cuts and engravings and features some of the most beautiful motifs of the 18th and 19th centuries. Every detail of the decoration, such as the glittering star wheel, is cut entirely by hand, with hours of specialized labor required to complete each piece in the collection achieving a very high standard of quality. Royal Worcester for USA Market Aesthetic Movement Floral Triangular Jug

A very fine Aesthetic Movement Royal Worcester triangular shaped jug hand painted with flowers and butterflies and made for Bailey Banks & Biddle in Philadelphia dated 1882. The porcelain jug is very reminiscent of the designs of Christopher Dresser with its angles and patterning and is formed in the shape of a triangle on a slightly wider foot with a decorative scroll and loop terminal handle and with a shaped top rim with a raised pouring spout with a low relief embossed stylized floral motif below and with an embossed floral edge border around the upper rim. The jug has a Z pattern border around the foot and is hand painted with floral and butterfly patterns around the body in colored enamels on ivory ground. The handle, upper rim, the embossed design and Z patterning around the foot are all painted in a satin brown color and highlighted with gilding which has also been used to outline the hand painted patterning to the body. The jug has a puce printed maker’s mark to the base along with a date code for 1882 and has puce printed retailers mark for Bailey Banks & Biddle.
