Native American Furniture

NATIVE AMERICAN STYLE

Native American broadly describes any Indigenous people in North America and encompasses hundreds of tribes and groups, all with distinct cultures. Native American–style furniture and decor likewise varies widely, from pieces created by Indigenous people to those appropriated by non-native designers.

Indigenous furniture’s rich heritage includes the bentwood boxes of the Northwest Coast carved from cedar for storing household or ceremonial objects. Generations of Native American people have made baskets for holding household items, with those in the Northeast using sweetgrass and those in the Southeast using pine needles and wicker. Artisans in the Plateau region wove watertight pieces like cradles from plant materials. Although these objects were intricately made, they were usually utilitarian rather than decorative.

The colonization of North America and the removal of Indigenous people from their lands led to the suppression of these practices. Many styles that used Native American motifs — such as Southwestern style, which was heavily influenced by the geometric patterns of Navajo textiles — have historically not involved Indigenous creators and, instead, have taken their traditions without their tribal context.

When decorating a home with Native American–style furniture, it is important to do so respectfully, by understanding the origins of motifs and objects and examining who profits from their sale. There are now Indigenous-led companies, such as Cherokee designer Cray Bauxmont-Flynn’s Amatoya and Totem House Design, promoting Indigenous work in furniture and home decor. Supporting Indigenous artists and artisans is essential to confronting the still pervasive issue of cultural appropriation in design.

Find a collection of Native American living room furniture, folk art, rugs and carpets, decorative objects and other items on 1stDibs.

81023 Southwestern Southwestern style Rug with Storm Pattern, 09'01 x 11'07. Enter the serene convergence of Native American design aesthetics, where the Shibui philosophy gracefully melds with the seamless fusion of Southwestern and Desert Modern styles in this meticulously handwoven Southwestern style rug. The Storm Pattern, a design rooted between 1897 and 1911 at the Crystal Trading Post, captures the essence of rainstorms through its central rectangle, diagonal lightning bolts, and zig-zag lines—an homage to the vibrancy of the growing season. In this distinctive Southwestern style rug, the dynamic interplay of contemporary Santa Fe elements and Southwestern eclecticism commands attention. Adorned with a palette of organic earthy hues, it unfolds a narrative resonating with understated warmth, sophistication, and rustic charm against an abrashed gray backdrop. A small square becomes the focal point, with stepped lines gracefully extending towards each corner. Stepped diamonds, cross motifs, triangles, and geometric shapes further enrich the composition, creating a visual symphony. The clean lines and earth-tone colors form a captivating juxtaposition within the geometric design, embodying the Shibui principle of simple, subtle beauty. Encased by a sleek black...

Large Signed Native American Hopi Original Mudhead Kachina Katsina Doll on Stand

By Native American Art

Located in Studio City, CA

A wonderfully handcrafted/detailed and decorated Native American Hopi Mudhead Kachina doll. Quite an unusually large work. A striking piece overall. Hand painted with leather and possibly turquoise (necklace) accompaniment. Hopi katsina figures, also known as kachina dolls, are figures carved, typically from cottonwood root by the Hopi people. Initially, kachina dolls were made to instruct young girls and new brides about katsinas or katsinam, the immortal beings that bring rain, control other aspects of the natural world and society, and act as messengers between humans and the spirit world. The Mudhead or Koyemsi figure is viewed as a clown/joker figure who is responsible for laughter and entertainment at Hopi dances and ceremonial events. He plays drums and games to keep his audience engaged. The piece is signed by the artist under the base. From an extensive collection of Native American objects and artifacts. Would be a great addition to any Native American Art...
