The influence of Chinese design on the West has been subtle, almost by osmosis, but we can see references in much of western art and design. Much of Europe has long had a magpie tradition of taking from the different cultures it has come into contact with in its past, furniture being no exception. Similar to European Chinoiseries, Britain formulated an Anglo-Chinese style that copied Chinese models yet adhered to British fashions affecting furniture design. French Louis XVI low caned fireside slipper chair, 18th century. This very rare and exceptional low chair is very old, and has withstood the test of time in a remarkably good state, with a minor loss to the base of the caning in a lower corner of the back (see picture). The caning has a lovely pattern. This low, deep chair was probably a fireside chair. However small metal bolts in the back suggest that it may have at some point been attached, possibly to a vehicle or to some kind of carrying device. It is beautiful and highly decorative.
