MODERN STYLE

The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw sweeping social change and major scientific advances — both of which contributed to a new aesthetic: modernism. Rejecting the rigidity of Victorian artistic conventions, modernists sought a new means of expression. References to the natural world and ornate classical embellishments gave way to the sleek simplicity of the Machine Age. Architect Philip Johnson characterized the hallmarks of modernism as “machine-like simplicity, smoothness or surface [and] avoidance of ornament.”

Early practitioners of modernist design include the De Stijl (“The Style”) group, founded in the Netherlands in 1917, and the Bauhaus School, founded two years later in Germany.

Followers of both groups produced sleek, spare designs — many of which became icons of daily life in the 20th century. The modernists rejected both natural and historical references and relied primarily on industrial materials such as metal, glass, plywood, and, later, plastics. While Bauhaus principals Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe created furniture from mass-produced, chrome-plated steel, American visionaries like Charles and Ray Eames worked in materials as novel as molded plywood and fiberglass. Today, Breuer’s Wassily chair, Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chaircrafted with his romantic partner, designer Lilly Reich — and the Eames lounge chair are emblems of progressive design and vintage originals are prized cornerstones of collections.

It’s difficult to overstate the influence that modernism continues to wield over designers and architects — and equally difficult to overstate how revolutionary it was when it first appeared a century ago. But because modernist furniture designs are so simple, they can blend in seamlessly with just about any type of décor. Don’t overlook them.

"Kyo-Co" Leather Covered Plywood Stool by Nathalie Orlandi for Dessie'

By Dessie Studio, Nathalie Orlandi

Located in Brooklyn, NY

"Kyo-Co" is a stool, designed by Nathalie Orlandi and manufactured by Dessie', made in plywood and covered in leather available in these color finishes: black, dark brown, dark red, mahogany, tobacco, natural or beige. Indoor use only. Available in different options: - black leather - tobacco leather - natural leather DIMENSIONS: D. 11.8", W. 11.8", H. 17.7" DESSIE' company's mission is putting a contemporary spin on the old tradition of cabinet-making, in order to offer pieces of furniture ready to get people excited and to satisfy aesthetic and functional values of the contemporary way of living. Dessie' was started during 90s and now proposes a collection of pieces of furniture inviting to discover a sophisticated and elegant design, an unique style where different influences merge, and to re-create a simple and refined design atmosphere for unconventional people who are freely looking for essential and high quality pieces. A collection, including tables, small tables, writing desks, console tables, bedside tables, chairs, bookcases, dressers, cabinets, cupboards, upholstered pieces of furniture and lamps, which was created having in mind an essential style and a careful attention to recent trends. Harmony of forms and care for high quality and rational design, attentively studying any detail, are some of key features of production by Dessie', which has been always reworking the legacy from the tradition by means of a strongly contemporary design language. The aim is to create a forward-looking style which anyway doesn't lose the value of the past as a main feature, in order to give any setting an original charme, indifferent to passing fads. Hence here's a formal language which uninterruptedly takes care of details and precious finishes, while experimenting expressive capabilities of the best materials: precious woods, steel, leather, natural fibers, etc. Flexibility and possibility of customizing any piece in order to offer a "tailor-made" production is one of key design criteria followed by Dessie'. Dessie' established a close cooperation with some famous international designers, like the Catalan Jaime Tresserra, who designed "Tecnica" collection. Besides its own production, Dessie' has been taking the assignment of selecting products by some Spanish companies (Andreu World, Carpyen, Dae, Indecasa, Mobles 114, Punt Mobles...

Baleri Italia Café Chair Kitchen Stool by Philippe Starck

By Baleri Italia, Philippe Starck

Located in Milano, Lombardia

A chair designed by the most famous French creator for the then most famous French café: Café Costes in Paris. This stackable chair is solid and comfortable: the ideal chair for a café. Divised in close cooperation with Baleri Italia, the minimal and timeless lines of the Café Chair can elegantly match with all both public and private interiors and lifestyles. Structure in steel tubing painted with epoxy powders in metallic silver gloss. The seat in lasten: latex rubber and polypropylene belting in black. Philippe Starck, world famous creator with multifaceted inventiveness, is always focused on the essential, his vision: that creation, whatever form it takes, must improve the lives of as many people as possible. By employing his prolific work across all domains, from everyday products (furniture, a citrus-squeezer, electric bikes, an individual wind turbine), to architecture (hotels, restaurants that aspire to be stimulating places) and naval and spatial engineering (mega yachts, space habitation module), he continually pushes the boundaries and requirements of design, becoming one of the most visionary and renowned creators of the international contemporary scene. In 1984 and 1985, Philippe Starck collaborated with Baleri to create five pieces of furniture: Café Chair, Francesca Spanish, Richard III, Président M...
