Italian style "bargueño". Tortoiseshell, wood, bronze. 18th century.

Located in Madrid, ES

Uncovered sample desk made of wood, with the central part advanced and highlighted with a double chapel of architectural composition. Each of the sides has five drawers with the front decorated with tortoiseshell and an elaborate golden bronze lock shield (two rampant lions faced, located on a garland and with a shield crowned between them, in which the hollow of the key). The center of the front has two levels: the lower one has four columns with éntasis, two on each side and joined by an entablature and a top finish in dark wood, and a series of gold metal elements in the center between which it stands out, sheltered under a semicircular arch, the figure of Hercules fighting against Caco; the upper one has some moldings forming some recesses, with an important heraldic shield in the center, all enhanced with volutes towards the sides, and different elements in gilded metal, of classicist inspiration. The general scheme of the furniture responds to a very widespread and valued model in 17th century Europe, of which the best examples have been, as a rule, those of Italian manufacture, and which is continued in the eighteenth century without breaking the compositional clarity of the one that shows in this frontal but yes changing slight decorative details and elements in the area of the central chapel, above all. The practice of using tortoiseshell plates...

20th Italian Cabinet on Stand, Baroque Bargueno with Inlays & Mounts

Located in Miami, FL

Italian cabinet on table. Walnut and rosewood, hawksbill, bronze in color and gilded, 20th century. Sample desktop pool located on ball and claw with handles on the sides. The buffet or table that holds barguen~era is carved legs insured by lower chambrana (also machined with a given center) together and to the cover by curved metal fasteners capped scroll. Barguen~o paws have claw-shaped carved synthesized bird on ball, something very typical of the seventeenth century. The cover has this elegant geometric decoration, and so do the five drawers discover: the decoration of the side to diamonds made in marquetry by dark wood inlaid fillets of light, an element that is repeated in the interior of the chapel is reduced. As usual in the baroque barguen~o, the center of the sample is where the decoration is conducted, in general, based on areas tortoiseshell framed or highlighted with dark wood moldings and surrounded by sinuous curved lines made in marquetry, always maintaining symmetry. T The general outline of the furniture is very common in all the European Baroque and the compositional clarity not break until the arrival of the Rococo. All decorative elements, based on the classical tradition, are characteristic of this type of furniture: desks with outdoor displays of this scheme are known and performed throughout Europe, with a Flemish influence in its creation, the Italians being the most valued for their decoration. The practice of employing tortoiseshell plates...

Important Italian Baroque Commode Attributed Grand Ducal Workshops, c.1690–1720

Important Italian Baroque Commode Attributed Grand Ducal Workshops, c.1690–1720

Located in King's Lynn, GB

An important North Italian Tuscan Baroque commode, manufactured in Florence circa 1690–1720 and attributed to the Grand Ducal Workshops of the Medici court. Representing the highest level of Florentine cabinetmaking of the period, it is inlaid throughout with exceptionally fine ivory and pewter in the Venetian manner, fitted with finely cast ormolu handles based on designs by Giovanni Battista Foggini, and retains an original partially faded circular “LC” stamp to the underside. Made for the wealthiest aristocratic and noble patrons by leading cabinetmakers and specialist craftsmen, the commode survives as an exceptional example of Florentine Baroque furniture. On the basis of its quality, rarity, construction, decoration and the comparative evidence identified during our research, we consider it among the most significant North Italian commodes of this period to appear on the market in recent years. Of breakfront form with projecting canted corners, the rounded overhanging top is constructed in walnut with exceptional areas of richly figured burr walnut, framed by rosewood crossbanding, and centred with floral marquetry enclosed by inlaid borders. The same rosewood crossbanding continues around the sides, with further floral inlaid centrepieces set against walnut and burr walnut veneers. Each drawer is individually decorated with floral ivory and pewter inlay and fitted with Foggini-designed ormolu handles and ormolu key escutcheons. The canted corners are inlaid from top to bottom with finely engraved dogs, hounds, birds and scrolling foliage, culminating in a lion within the frieze above each corner. Rarity, Research & Attribution We have undertaken extensive research into this commode, consulting leading Italian furniture specialists, international dealers, authors and historians, and comparing it with documented examples in museums, former Medici residences, private collections and the international art market. One of its most unusual features is the ivory and pewter marquetry. Professor Enrico Colle documents related Florentine commodes in his published studies of Medici furniture...

Important Early 19th Century Danish Neoclassical Secretaire NIcolai Abildgaard
Important Early 19th Century Danish Neoclassical Secretaire NIcolai Abildgaard

Important Early 19th Century Danish Neoclassical Secretaire NIcolai Abildgaard

By Nicolai Abildgaard

Located in Worpswede / Bremen, DE

The slender secretaire on an unusual high stand with four curved legs dived into quarters, the frame with a central inlaid palmette motif. The fall down writing flap, enclosing a fitted interior with numerous drawers, above and below are two doors enclosing one shelf. The top of the secretaire in form of a classical triangular pediment, the center of which is decorated with an inlaid stylized anthemion. The entire front is very plain and geometrical, divided into six panels inlaid with rectangular fields in light wood. The design of this mahogany secretaire is based on classical Roman and Greek models, in this case the bookcases that were portrayed on frescoes, reliefs and Roman gold glass. As secretaires were not known in Antiquity, Abildgaard designed his secretaire as a cupboard though in such a way, that the two centre doors are actually a fall front writing top. The carved turned underframe is inspired by Etruscan footstools, which were known especially from reliefs and had been reproduced in contemporary prints. Abildgaard designed this piece of furniture far more in accordance with ancient tradition than did the other furniture designer of the day. The most important (and avantgarde) piece of the furniture Abildgaard designed in the first decade of the 19th century, is this secretaire, which marks a real renewal in relation to the secretaires that constituted the master's test for the members of the guild of cabinetmakers at this time. Compared with these, this secretaire is a very light piece of furniture that does not follow the contemporary fashion towards classical architectural decorations such as columns, pillars, architraves, etc. which often endow such pieces. Nicolai Abraham Abildgaard (11 September 1743 – 4 June 1809) was a leading Danish Neoclassical painter who also designed (mostly for his own use) elegant Grecian furniture...
