19th century Louis XVI marble top walnut display buffet by Kint of Gand is a stunning piece that will immediately command admiration from all who enter the room in which it is displayed! Hand-crafted by Edouard Kint, a fine furniture maker in the historic city of Ghent (called Gand in French), a city that originally started as a settlement at the confluence of the Rivers Scheldt and Leie and in the Late Middle Ages became one of the largest and richest cities of northern Europe, with some 50,000 people in 1300. It prospered primarily because of the rich, fertile soils surrounding the area. Evidence of habitation during the Stone Age has been found, and by the late 19th century it was a thriving European center with historical significance, producing such masterworks as this splendid buffet. Although it is almost six feet in width and over two feet in depth, its rounded sides soften the impact of its footprint on your floor plan, while simultaneously providing copious display, storage, and serving space in abundance! Crafted from hand-select walnut, it has been lavishly carved with intertwined foliates across the main facade in a step-front configuration, with rounded cornerposts carved with rosettes, egg form and laurel garlands atop reeded and fluted motifs providing a framework for the lush, artistic neoclassical carvings on the parquet-paneled doors. Urns in full relief are depicted amongst flowing ribbon, floral garlands and intertwined vines. Bronze key guards add a nice accent. On each side, recessed behind the aforementioned rounded cornerposts, are the display cabinets in a full quarter-round form, with fluting across the drawer that, with the bronze bale pull, pivots out on a single rear hinge. 18th century, Italian Policrome Lacquered Wood Chest of Drawers This small and elegant chest of drawers was made in Genoa, northern Italy, around the middle of the eighteenth century. This model of dresser is inspired by the models that spread in France in the Louis XV period and to which all the cabinet makers were immediately inspired. It consists of four drawers, of which two smaller upper. It has a wooden structure entirely lacquered in light ocre decorated with floral and foliate decorations and compositions of still life of fruit in shades of red. The handles and mouthpieces of the locks are in finely chiseled burnished bronze, typical of the Louis XV era. The molded top is in Rosso Francia marble, a marble from abroad that at the time was very precious and expensive. The dresser has the front and the sides moved by the move line, legs thin and slightly curved. The front legs are embellished with burnished bronze chiseled tips shaped like acanthus leaf. This piece of furniture is quite rare because of its small size that make it easy to fit into any environment. Constructed from amaranth with veneered tulipwood "en semelle" and dressed with a profusion of finely cast & hand-chased ormolu mounts, with a Sarrancolin marble platform, atop a breakfront frieze, set with three drawers, over a unified central panel divided in two drawers depicting a 'bois de bout' marquetry floral still life within a gilt-bronze frame, flanked by panels of quarter-cut tulipwood with ormolu handles suspended from lover's knot bows, with conforming matched panels to the concave sides. The apron is mounted with a finely cast central scroll, and the canted corners dressed with cascading ormolu foliate mounts terminating in lion's paw feet. French, circa 1910 Madame Adélaïde's commode The design for this commode was one of the earliest royal commissions awarded to Jean-Henri Riesener (1734-1806), the master craftsman who was later appointed cabinetmaker to Louis XVI and his court in 1774. The commode, with its architectural features, extensive ormolu mounts and immaculate marquetry work, was ordered in 1776 and delivered that same year for Madame Adélaïde (1732-1800), the daughter of king Louis XV and Marie Leszczynska. The commode was later moved to château de Bellevue when it was given to her by king Louis XVI. The famous commode was later part of the Earl of Carnarvon's collection, who also bought furniture made for Napoleon. Carnarvon's wife, Lady Elmina Wombwell, was the child of Alfred de Rotschild, which may explain the post-revolutionary history of the royal commode. In 2018, the Riesener commode was bought for the nation for the sum of 3.5m€ and returned to Versailles.
