Two Stems with Red Flowers – Botanical Watercolor by A.L., 1819

Two Stems with Red Flowers – Botanical Watercolor by A.L., 1819

Located in Langweer, NL

TITLE: Two Stems with Red Flowers – Original Botanical Watercolor by A.L., 1819 DESCRIPTION: A refined original botanical watercolor depicting two slender stems bearing vivid red flowers and delicately rendered green leaves, painted in 1819 by an unidentified artist with the initials A.L. The composition is elegant and restrained, with the flowering stems isolated against the natural cream-colored paper. The artist has carefully observed the structure of the plant, combining botanical precision with the decorative quality characteristic of early 19th-century flower studies. The work is monogrammed “A.L.” on the left stem and dated “1819” on the right. Particularly noteworthy is the paper itself, which bears the watermark “J. Whatman 1817.” James Whatman's celebrated English papers were highly regarded by artists and printmakers for their quality and durability. The watermark dates the manufacture of the paper to 1817, while the artist's inscription dates the execution of the watercolor to 1819. The two dates therefore provide an unusually clear chronology: the Whatman sheet was manufactured in 1817 and used by the artist for this botanical watercolor two years later, in 1819. An attractive and unusually well-documented original botanical artwork from the Regency period. ARTIST: A.L., unidentified artist. The work is monogrammed “A.L.” on the left stem. DATE: 1819 - dated on the artwork. MEDIUM: Original watercolor on paper PAPER: J. Whatman paper, watermarked 1817 ORIGIN: European, probably British or Continental European PERIOD / STYLE: Regency period Early 19th century Botanical / Natural History SUBJECT: Two stems with red flowers Botanical study Flower study DIMENSIONS: Image: approximately 29 × 16.5 cm Sheet: approximately 46 × 32.5 cm MARKS: Monogrammed “A.L.” on the left stem. Dated “1819” on the right. Paper watermarked “J. Whatman 1817.” CONDITION: Very good antique condition. The watercolor retains attractive and strong colors. Some light age-related toning and occasional minor foxing are present. A subtle former light line is visible, consistent with previous presentation beneath a passe-partout. The sheet was attached beneath a passe-partout along the upper edge. FRAMING: Offered unframed. Any framed or interior photographs shown are for presentation and inspiration only. AUTHENTICITY: An original, unique hand-painted watercolor dating from 1819. This is not a print, engraving or modern reproduction. The Battle of Trafalgar, Admiral Nelson & British Fleet, 1805

The Battle of Trafalgar, Admiral Nelson & British Fleet, 1805

Located in Langweer, NL

Title: The Battle of Trafalgar, Admiral Nelson & British Fleet, 1805 Original antique 19th-century steel engraving depicting the Battle of Trafalgar, the decisive British naval victory of 21 October 1805 during the Napoleonic Wars. This dramatic maritime scene is after the painting by celebrated British marine artist Clarkson Frederick Stanfield, R.A. (1793–1867), and was engraved by John Cousen (1804–1880). The inscriptions beneath the image read: “C. STANFIELD, R.A. PAINTER.” “J. COUSEN, ENGRAVER.” “THE BATTLE OF TRAFALGAR.” “FROM THE PICTURE IN THE VERNON GALLERY.” The Battle of Trafalgar Fought on 21 October 1805 off Cape Trafalgar on the southwestern coast of Spain, the Battle of Trafalgar was one of the most important naval engagements of the Napoleonic Wars. The British Royal Navy, commanded by Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson, confronted the combined French and Spanish fleet under Admiral Pierre-Charles Villeneuve. Nelson employed an unconventional attack, dividing his fleet into columns that sailed directly into the Franco-Spanish battle line. The resulting close-range engagement ended in a decisive British victory and confirmed Britain’s command of the seas. The battle became one of the defining events of British maritime history. Admiral Horatio Nelson & HMS Victory Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758–1805) commanded the British fleet from his famous flagship HMS Victory. Shortly before the battle commenced, Nelson ordered the celebrated signal: “England expects that every man will do his duty.” During the fighting, Nelson was struck by a musket ball fired from the French ship Redoutable and was mortally wounded. He died aboard HMS Victory during the battle, having lived long enough to learn that victory was assured. His death at the moment of triumph made Nelson a national hero and permanently linked his name with Trafalgar. The Scene Stanfield’s composition conveys the enormous scale, violence and confusion of a major naval engagement in the age of sail. Ships-of-the-line crowd the horizon, their towering masts and rigging emerging through smoke, spray and the dramatic sky. Several vessels are depicted fighting at extremely close quarters, recalling the devastating exchanges of cannon fire that characterized the battle. In the foreground, broken spars, wreckage and sailors struggling in the turbulent sea emphasize the human consequences of the engagement. The exceptionally wide composition gives the engraving an almost panoramic character and makes it particularly effective as a decorative maritime print. Clarkson Frederick Stanfield, R.A. (1793–1867) Clarkson Frederick Stanfield was one of the leading British marine painters of the 19th century. Stanfield had first-hand experience of life at sea before establishing himself as an artist. His knowledge of ships, rigging, changing weather and the movement of the ocean contributed to the convincing maritime atmosphere for which his work became celebrated. He was elected a Royal Academician and became particularly admired for his dramatic marine and historical paintings. John Cousen (1804–1880) The painting was translated into engraving by John Cousen, an accomplished English engraver known particularly for his landscape, architectural and marine subjects after important contemporary British artists. His finely worked engraving preserves the dramatic tonal effects of Stanfield’s original painting, from the dark turbulent foreground water to the distant ships disappearing into smoke and atmospheric haze. The Vernon Gallery The original painting was part of the important collection assembled by British businessman and philanthropist Robert Vernon (1774–1849). Vernon built an extensive collection devoted primarily to contemporary British art and presented his collection to the British nation in 1847. The inscription “From the Picture in the Vernon Gallery” records the important provenance of Stanfield’s original composition. Technique: Original antique steel engraving Artist: Clarkson Frederick Stanfield, R.A. (1793–1867) Engraver: John Cousen (1804–1880) Title: The Battle of Trafalgar Subject: Battle of Trafalgar Date depicted: 21 October 1805 Historical figure: Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson British flagship: HMS Victory Historical period: Napoleonic Wars Origin: England Publication date: 19th century Style / Period: Victorian / 19th-century British maritime art Condition: Good antique condition with overall age-related toning, scattered spotting and foxing and minor staining. There is visible wear and some paper loss and irregularity to the outer edges and corners, particularly at the upper corners. Some minor handling marks and creasing are present, consistent with the age of the sheet. The engraved image itself remains strong, detailed and visually impressive. Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the condition description. Please note: This is an original antique 19th-century steel engraving, not a modern reproduction. The print is sold unframed. Framed images or interior views, if shown, are for presentation and inspiration only. Located in Langweer, NL

Diana of Ephesus Antique Engraving, Montfaucon Antiquité Expliquée, 1721 This original eighteenth-century copper engraving titled “Diane d’Ephese” illustrates several sculptural representations of the celebrated cult statue of Artemis of Ephesus, one of antiquity’s most enigmatic and symbolically charged religious images. The plate originates from Bernard de Montfaucon’s landmark antiquarian publication L’antiquité expliquée et représentée en figures, published in Paris in 1721, a pioneering encyclopedic study that helped establish the scholarly foundations of archaeology and art history during the Enlightenment. Montfaucon’s ambitious project sought to systematically document the material culture of the ancient world through carefully researched engravings based on surviving sculptures, coins, reliefs, and historical sources. This plate presents multiple interpretations of the Ephesian goddess, comparing sculptural variants and medallion representations. The central figures stand rigidly frontal, crowned and richly adorned, their bodies covered with registers of animals, symbolic figures, and ritual ornamentation. Smaller circular images below further demonstrate how the goddess appeared on ancient coins and reliefs, reflecting Montfaucon’s analytical approach to classical imagery. Unlike the familiar Greek Artemis, goddess of the hunt, the Ephesian Diana represents an older Anatolian mother deity assimilated into Greco-Roman religion. Her distinctive iconography—tiered body coverings, animal motifs, and fertility symbolism—expresses abundance, cosmic order, and divine protection. During the eighteenth century, such images fascinated European scholars attempting to interpret ancient religions through comparative symbolism, making Montfaucon’s publication a cornerstone reference for collectors, antiquarians, and early museums. The engraving is executed with refined precision typical of Parisian copperplate work of the early 1700s, combining scientific clarity with strong decorative appeal. The balanced composition and graphic symmetry allow the print to function equally as a scholarly artifact and an elegant wall piece suited to both classical and contemporary interiors. This original antique engraving is offered unframed, providing flexibility to select a frame appropriate to the intended interior setting. Condition: Good antique condition with age-related toning and light paper discoloration consistent with early eighteenth-century prints...

Title: Set of Three Hand-Colored Equestrian Engravings, circa 1727 Description: A decorative set of three antique hand-colored equestrian engravings showing riders on horseback in classical 18th-century manège poses. The plates are titled Le Courageux, Le Loyal, and L’Esperance, each depicting a finely dressed rider guiding a horse with elegance and control. These prints are from the celebrated equestrian tradition associated with Friedrich Wilhelm Baron d’Eisenberg’s Description du Manège Moderne, published in the early 18th century. The work is known for its refined depictions of classical horsemanship, riding-school movements, and noble equestrian presentation. The hand coloring adds warmth and decorative appeal, with rich tones in the riders’ coats, saddlery, and horses. Western Wear St Silver/14k Gold Belt & Buckle by "Bohlin, Hollywood Ca" C.1940's

By Edward H. Bohlin

Located in Incline Village, NV

Rare find and highly sought after vintage western wear cowboy, three piece "Ranger Buckle" and leather belt set; made by the iconic and most famous 20th century luxury belt maker, Edward H. Bohlin (marked) of Hollywood, California during the heyday and "Golden Age of Western Wear" mid century production period, and "made for the stars" during the 1940's; when such articles were made for cowboy screen actors like Tom Mix, John Wayne, and Roy Rodgers et al. The "Bohlin" logo (see images) used on all three pieces is the shield image utilized by the company from 1930 --1950's, so this is one of the earlier and more desirable Bohlin western wear collectibles. The company was founded in California in 1920 by Edward H. Bolin who sought to capitalize on the "cowboy" interest and fashion phenomenon taking over the west, by making fine quality western wear luxury goods for the wealthy. He quickly became recognized for his fine silversmithing (referred to as the "silversmith to the stars") and a known expert in applying gold filigree overlays, as is evident on the 14k gold rope edges designed on this belt. This high end belt is replete with fine quality .925 sterling silver and 14k gold accents to the etched and perimeter twisted rope edge design of the buckle which is hand engraved scroll work pattern in a floral motif "Western Rose" pattern . The set is complete with the original buckle, the keeper, and tail piece which are similarly and elaborately decorated; in addition to a hand made 1 1/4" wide tool and dyed black leather belt in a classic basket weave pattern pattern; which tapers down to a 1" billet to accommodate the tail and entry through the keeper hardware assembly. The three piece set was catalogued as Model 1173E "Parade Series and was Bohlin's finest quality. The condition is excellent and all original; the silver is intact and fine looking, the sparkling 14k gold highlights and the belt show very little wear; in fact, there is no apparent single "wear line" where one owner might have worn the belt for an extended period of time. If you are looking for the best, you need look no further. The belt comfortably fits a size 34" through 38" waist line. It measures 46 1/2" long; the first prong hole where the tongue passes through is 39" from the end of the buckle and there are five holes after that each spaced 1" apart. The rest of the measurements are: buckle= 2" deep x 1 3/4" high keeper= 3/4" wide x 7/8" high tail (billet)= 1/1/4" long Provenance: From my own personal collection of Western cowboy...

Egypt & Lower Nubia – Elegant Antique Atlas Map of the Nile, ca.1888

Located in Langweer, NL

Egypt & Lower Nubia – Elegant Antique Atlas Map of the Nile, ca.1888 This elegant antique atlas map presents Egypt and the Nile Valley in a refined, softly colored composition that feels timeless and architectural. The long vertical sweep of the Nile immediately draws the eye, flowing from the Mediterranean through Cairo and Upper Egypt toward Lower Nubia, framed by delicately engraved desert regions and subtle coastal shading along the Red Sea. Produced by Rand, McNally & Co. at the height of late-19th-century American atlas design, the map combines clarity with a restrained pastel palette that works exceptionally well in contemporary interiors. The balance between open desert spaces and the finely detailed river corridor gives the sheet a calm, almost meditative presence on the wall, making it particularly attractive for living rooms, studies, libraries, or hospitality settings. Cartographic details are crisp yet unobtrusive, allowing the overall composition to read as decorative rather than technical. The typography is elegant and evenly spaced, while the hand-colored regions add warmth without overpowering the design. When framed, the vertical format emphasizes the monumental scale of the Nile and creates a strong visual anchor in a room. A particularly appealing feature of this sheet is that the reverse side displays a decorative map of Africa, making it a versatile double-sided atlas leaf. This adds interest for collectors and interior designers alike, whether framed with visible margins, floated in a double-glazed frame, or appreciated as a historical object in a portfolio or drawer. Printed on original late-19th-century atlas paper, this map retains the authentic texture and presence expected of a period piece, offering both decorative impact and historical character without feeling heavy or academic. Condition report: Original atlas paper with light age toning consistent with period. Minor edge wear and gentle handling marks typical of bound atlas sheets. Overall well preserved with clean color and strong legibility. Framing tips: This map works beautifully in a light oak, walnut, or muted gold frame with an off-white or warm ivory mat. A tall vertical mat emphasizes the flow of the Nile and enhances the architectural feel. Museum glass is recommended to preserve the soft pastel tones.
