Pool of Bethesda, Jerusalem: A Hand-colored Aquatint & Engraving by L. Mayer

By Luigi Mayer

Located in Alamo, CA

This is a hand-colored aquatint and engraving entitled "Pool of Bethesda, Jerusalem", published in London by R. Bowyer in 1804. The print was created by Thomas Milton (1743-1827) from drawings by Luigi Mayer. This beautiful, detailed, original engraving is printed on deluxe J. Whatman paper with very wide left and right margins. There is a watermark "1801" indicating the year the paper was made. The sheet measures 11.25" high and 16" wide. There is a small faint spot in the upper margin on the left and a tiny faint spot in the right upper corner and another in the left lower corner. The engraving is otherwise in excellent condition with vibrant colors throughout the image. "The Pool of Bethesda...

Untitled (Fantastic Scene)
Untitled (Fantastic Scene)

Untitled (Fantastic Scene)

By Michael Bowen

Located in San Francisco, CA

This artwork "Untitled, Fantastic Scene" c.1975 is an original color etching with aquatint on wove paper by American surrealist artist Michael Bowen, 1937-2009. It is hand signed in pencil by the artist. The plate mark (image) size is 14.85 x 18 inches, sheet size is 21.5 x 26 inches. It is in excellent condition, has never been framed. About the subject: Nowhere is the intertwining of metaphysical, biographic and social narratives more evident than in the Café Life series painted in the 1980’s. Though the “series” was done in the 80’s, the pieces really revive the spirit of the Beat café scene, which began in the mid-1950’s and which was so instrumental to the particular spiritual and social vibe of the counter culture. And his Café Life observations continue over his artist life with scenes, such as the ones here, from Los Angles, Bolinas, Mexico and Italy. About the artist: Michael Bowen (December 8, 1937 – March 7, 2009) was an American fine artist known as one of the co-founders of the late 20th and 21st century Visionary art movements. His works include paintings on canvas and paper, 92 intaglio etchings based on Jungian psychology, assemblage, bronze sculpture, collage, and handmade art books. An icon of the American Beat Generation and the 1960s counterculture, Bowen is also known for his role in inspiring and organizing the first Human Be-In in San Francisco. Chronicled in books and periodicals reflecting on the turbulent 1960s, Bowen's historical impact on both the literary and visual art worlds is well documented. He remains influential among avant-garde art circles around the world. He started his art career at age 17, when he joined the American installation artist Ed Kienholz in his Los Angeles studio. There he met and joined with other influential Beat Generation artists including Wallace Berman, John Altoon, and Dennis Hopper. Bowen participated in the construction of the Ferus Gallery and Now Gallery created by Ed Kienholz and curated by Walter Hopps. Bowen attended the Chouinard Art Institute for several years during his formative artistic experiences in Los Angeles. In the late 50s and early 60s, Bowen continued his spiritual training and research. He investigated and practiced a variety of occult topics, Eastern philosophies, and mysticism, and his artwork reflected these themes. Bowen is often referred to as a mystic artist. As a lifelong student of the Bhagavad-Gita, Bowen's entire career has emulated the spiritual warrior archetype of Arjuna, fighting for the Bill of Rights of the United States Constitution. Michael Bowen moved to San Francisco in the late 1950s, and along with fellow artist comrades Arthur Monroe...

Carlos Garcia de la Nuez (Cuba, 1959) 'Desde una Isla', 2005 engraving on paper Velin Arches 300 g. 28 x 39.8 in. (71 x 101 cm.) Edition of 99 Unframed ID: GAC-111 Hand-signed by author ___________________________________________________________ Carlos García de la Nuez. Born in Havana, Cuba, 1959. Lives and works in Mexico City, Mexico. He is a member of the renowned 1980s generation of Cuban artists, whose works differentiated from other contemporaries, noticeably in their intentional distancing from political criticism as a form of expression. This generation was interested in establishing and legitimizing new values of art for art’s sake, gathering inspiration from art movements happening outside of Cuba. Born in Havana, Cuba in 1959, the artist’s paintings explore abstraction and semiotics through the use of color, texture and scale. García de la Nuez participated in the historic 1982 exhibition titled 4x4 with colleagues Gustavo Acosta, José Franco and Moses Finalé.  In 1979 García de la Nuez entered the San Alejandro Academy of Arts and in 1983 completed his studies at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana. He received his Masters of Arts in 1988 from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, upon receiving a scholarship from the Rockefeller Foundation. He spent a decade working and living in Paris, where he exhibited across Europe and was selected to participate in a silkscreen portfolio, Kinderstem, published by Domberger-Edition in Germany that featured García de la Nuez along with Max Bill, Sol LeWitt, Keith Haring, Christo, among others. In the early 1990’s García de la Nuez relocated in Mexico City, where he currently works and lives.  The artist’s works have been exhibited in various museums around the world including Boston, New York, Miami, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Bogota, Mexico City, San Jose, Panama City, Canada, Paris, Berlin, Stuttgart, London, Madrid, Moscow and Havana.  His work has been awarded the Painting Award 13 de Marzo...

The upper layer is a reddish tan, whereas the bottom layer is a rich brown. Geometrical shapes are arranged such that they almost form mirror images of each other, but vary enough to create interest and a sense of movement. Signed in the lower right corner. Numbered 56/350 in the lower left corner. Includes original certificate of authenticity. Presented in a new cream mat with foamcore backing. Mat size: 42"H x 32"W Paper size: 33.75"H x 24.5"W Johnny Friedlaender was a leading 20th century artist, whose works have been exhibited in Germany, France, Netherlands, Italy, Japan and the United States. He has been influential upon other notable artists, who were students in his Paris gallery. His preferred medium of aquatint etching is a technically difficult artistic process, of which Friedlaender has been a pioneer. Johnny Gotthard Friedlaender was born in Pless (Silesia) and his early studies were in Breslau under Otto Mueller. In 1936 Friedlaender journeyed to Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, Austria, France and Belgium. At the Hague he held a successful exhibition of etchings and watercolours. He fled to Paris in 1937 as a political refugee of the Nazi regime with his young wife, who was an actress. In that year he held an exhibition of his etchings which included the works: L 'Equipe and Matieres et Formes. From 1939 to 1943 he was interned in a series of concentration camps, but survived against poor odds. After freedom in 1944 Friedlaender began a series of twelve etchings entitled Images du Malheur with Sagile as his publisher. In the same year he received a commission to illustrate four books by Freres Tharaud of the French Academy. In 1945 he performed work for several newspapers including Cavalcade and Carrefour. In the year 1947, he produced the work Reves Cosmiques, and in that same year he became a member of the Salon de Mai, which position he held until 1969. In the year 1948 he began a friendship with the painter Nicolas de Stael and held his first exhibition in Copenhagen at Galerie Birch. The following year he showed for the first time in Galerie La Hune in Paris. After living in Paris for 13 years, Friedlaender became a French citizen in 1950. Friedlaender expanded his geographic scope in 1951, and exhibited in Tokyo in a modern art show. In the same year he was a participant in the XI Trienale in Milan, Italy. By 1953 he had produced works for a one-man show at the Museum of Neuchâtel and exhibited at the Galerie Moers in Amsterdam, the II Camino Gallery in Rome, in São Paulo, Brazil and in Paris. He was a participant of the French Italian Art Conference in Turin, Italy that same year. Friedlaender accepted an international art award in 1957, becoming the recipient of the Biennial Kakamura Prize in Tokyo. In 1959 he received a teaching post awarded by UNESCO at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro. By 1968, Friedlaender was travelling to Puerto Rico, New York and Washington, D.C. to hold exhibitions. That year he also purchased a home in the Burgundy region of France. 1971 was another year of diverse international travel including shows in Bern, Milan, Paris, Krefeld and again New York. In the latter city he exhibited paintings at the Far Gallery, a venue becoming well known for its patronage of important twentieth century artists. From his atelier in Paris Friedlaender instructed younger artists who themselves went on to become noteworthy, among them Arthur Luiz Piza, Brigitte Coudrain, Rene Carcan...
