The Court Ladies Dressed Gerda - Women Illustrators

Located in Miami, FL

Women illustrators were alive, well, and quite active in the early 20th century. Most of their production was associated with topics that dealt with the home, children or fairy tales. In this masterfully rendered work in pen and ink, Jacobs displays great technical skill in presenting three maidens dressing a beautiful female member of the Court wearing a tiara. Signed in a cartouche lower right From: Stella Mead, Great Stories from Many Lands, London: James Herbert and Co, 1936, page 78 " Red and White Roses" Provenance: Chris Beetles Work is elegantly matted and not framed. This work is an exceptional example of Kádár's mature Cubist style. Kádár was a Hungarian painter influenced by Der Blaue Reiter...

Mariette Lydis (Vienna 1887 - Buenos Aires 1970) is an Austrian painter and illustrator who was successful in Paris in the 1930s, in Montparnasse and then in Argentina, where she emigrated in 1940. Mariette Lydis was born on 24 August in Vienna, Austria 1887. From 1919 to 1922 she signed her works with the initials MPK for Marietta Pachoffer Karñy, a name derived from her first marriage in 1910 to Julius Koloman Pachoffer-Karñy, who died on 22 April 1922. Subsequently she lived in different cities around Europe, among others: Athens and Florence. She moved to France from 1926 to 1939, during these years she exhibited and became a member of the Salon d'Automne. She befriended Count Giuseppe Govone, the art publisher, in 1928 and married him on 1 August 1934, for whom she illustrated the books of many authors and cultivated a great friendship with Henry de Montherlant, which came about through the publication of a first in 1938 monograph by the author of Les Jeunes Filles. Fearing the German invasion, she travelled to England and then to Buenos Aires in July 1940, where she stayed and published published her latest paintings...

Beach of Kusambe, Bali 1937

Located in Amsterdam, NL

Four outrigger proa’s on the beach of Kusambe, Bali, 1937 Signed with initials, dated and described with location bottom left Pencil and ink on paper, 29.7 x 35 cm In ebonized frame with white mount WILLEM OTTO WIJNAND NIEUWENKAMP (1874-1950) Nieuwenkamp was born on July 27th 1874 in Amsterdam. His father owned sailing ships sailing to Indonesia and hearing the stories of the returning captains evoked in the young Nieuwenkamp an obsession for distant lands and adventure. After a failed attempt by his father to have his son make a career in his business, Nieuwenkamp attended the Academy for Decorative Art in Amsterdam. However, he left within one year to go his own way. He was an autodidact and a great experimenter with new techniques, particularly in the art of etching. Nieuwenkamp was a very focused man with the discipline of a scientist tempered by the sensitivity of an artist, a lust for adventure, a natural appreciation for ethnic arts and an enormous ambition to tread new paths. In 1898 he visited Indonesia for the first time and on his second visit in 1903-1904 he went on to Bali and became the first foreign artist to love Bali and the Balinese with a passion. Having secured agreements with several museums in the Netherlands to obtain Balinese art and objects for their collections, Nieuwenkamp immediately started to purchase and order a wide range of ethnographic art and objects from local artists and craftsmen. Through his drawings and books, he gave an excellent impression of Balinese art and culture at that time. Since 1854 Northern Bali was under Dutch...

By Charles Hargens

Located in Lambertville, NJ

Jim’s of Lambertville is proud to offer this artwork by: Charles Hargens (1893 - 1997) Carversville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania artist and illustrator Charles was born in Hot Springs, South Dakota. As a young boy he loved to draw cowboys, Indians and ranch buildings. By age ten, he was “a commercial success” selling drawings of neighbors’ barns and houses for $25. When he grew older, his parents consented to enroll him at the Pennsylvania Academy (1913-20) where he studied with Daniel Garber, Hugh Breckenridge, Henry McCarter, and William Merritt Chase. At Garber’s invitation, Hargens occasionally came to visit his Lumberville studio to paint with him. A lifelong friendship resulted. In 1915, the Pennsylvania Academy awarded Hargens its Cresson Traveling Scholarship and he went to Paris to study at the Academie Julian and the Academie Colarossi. Hargens was a fellow of the Pennsylvania Academy and a member of the Society of Illustrators, the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and the Philadelphia Sketch Club. He exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago (1923 awards) and at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (1915 prize, 1917 prize, 1918 award). By the early 1920s, he began to produce illustrations for book jackets, books, magazines and advertisements. His career took off and soon his illustrations of cowboys, Indians, Western life, Revolutionary War action and boy scout themes appeared in, or adorned the covers of The Saturday Evening Post, Collier’s, Liberty, McCall’s, Boy’s Life and Gentlemen’s Quarterly. His work also appeared on billboards and advertisements for Stetson hats and Coca-cola. It was conditioned by Hargens that all of his original art was returned to him after being published. His entire body work remained in his studio until his death in 1997; this is largely the reason his paintings have not yet commanded the high prices of his contemporary Saturday Evening Post illustrators (i.e. Rockwell, Leyendecker and N.C. Wyeth). At first he and his wife worked from their studio in Philadelphia. In 1940, they purchased a property at the intersection of Aquetong and Sawmill roads in Carversville. They commuted to Philadelphia regularly and stayed in South Dakota every summer. Eventually, he set up a studio next to his Carversville home. After moving to Carversville, Hargens began a lifelong friendship with George Sotter. Hargens’ Carversville home was the subject of many of George Sotter’s paintings long before and during the time Hargens lived there. Hargens also studied with Henry Rand...

Located in Bristol, CT

Watercolor w/ gouache highlights Art Sz: 12"H x 18"W Frame Sz: 16"H x 22 1/2"W (SIGNED LL) Inscribed LL: The Freshest thing to win a National in years- and he broke the record at that. Golden Miller wins in 9:20 2/5 1934 Golden Miller (1927–1957) was a Thoroughbred racehorse who is the most successful Cheltenham Gold Cup horse ever, winning the race in five consecutive years between 1932 and 1936. He also is the only horse to win both of the United Kingdom's premier steeplechase races - the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Grand National - in the same year (1934). Golden Miller was trained by Basil Briscoe in Longstowe, Cambridgeshire and owned by Dorothy Paget, who was the British flat racing Champion Owner in 1943, and the leading National Hunt owner in 1933-34, 1940–41 and 1951-52. In 1931, Golden Miller made his steeplechasing debut at Newbury Racecourse where he finished first, only to be disqualified for carrying incorrect weight. On 30 December, he won the Reading Chase before winning the Sefton Steeplechase on 20 January 1932. In 1933, as a six-year-old and winner of two Cheltenham Gold Cups, he started as the 9/1 favourite in the Grand National but fell at the Canal Turn. In the 1934 Grand National win, he set a new course record of 9 min 20.4s for Aintree. This victory was the middle of five consecutive Gold Cup victories, a Gold Cup record.[2] He retired in 1939 with a record of 29 wins from 52 races. He is buried at Elsenham Stud, a working farm in Elsenham, West Essex. Artist Bio: Paul Desmond Brown (1893-1958) was born in Minnesota and soon moved to New York City with his family. A quote from his biography: "Paul Brown told his host on a radio interview held in September of 1956, 'One day in 1904, I got 50 cents someplace and went over to the National Horse Show at the old Madison Square Garden and saw 'fine leppers,' [a term used for jumpers] as we called them, and Thoroughbreds for the first time.' From then on he appeared to be hooked on drawing horses." At the age of 17, his family relocated again to Garden City on Long Island, where Brown had the opportunity to explore polo grounds...
