Signed “Heitland” lower right by the artist. Condition is excellent. Circa 1930. Under UV plexiglass. A similar painting of the same harbor done in 1924 by Wilmot Heitland is in the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. Later, Heitland moved on to paint and teach at the Art Club. His paintings can be found in the collections of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts; the Brooklyn Museum; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; and locally at the Museum of Fine Arts, William R. Hough and Co., Stetson College of Law Library, and the Poynter Institute. Heitland moved to St. Petersburg because of the active Art Club here. He had a solo show of his work at the Art Club in 1963, and served as the exhibition chairman in 1964. He died in 1969.
Overview
San Felipe de Puerto Plata is the capital of the Puerto Plata province on the Dominican Republic’s Atlantic north coast. The city is best known for its beaches. Playa Dorada’s lengthy beachfront is backed by resorts and an 18-hole golf course. The city’s old colonial-era center is dominated by the 16th-century Fortaleza San Felipe, a Spanish fortress that now houses historical and military artifacts.

"Chisholm Trail"
Located in Lambertville, NJ
Jim’s of Lambertville is proud to offer this artwork by:
Charles Hargens (1893 - 1997)
Carversville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania artist and illustrator Charles was born in Hot Springs, South Dakota. As a young boy he loved to draw cowboys, Indians and ranch buildings. By age ten, he was “a commercial success” selling drawings of neighbors’ barns and houses for $25. When he grew older, his parents consented to enroll him at the Pennsylvania Academy (1913-20) where he studied with Daniel Garber, Hugh Breckenridge, Henry McCarter, and William Merritt Chase. At Garber’s invitation, Hargens occasionally came to visit his Lumberville studio to paint with him. A lifelong friendship resulted. In 1915, the Pennsylvania Academy awarded Hargens its Cresson Traveling Scholarship and he went to Paris to study at the Academie Julian and the Academie Colarossi.
Hargens was a fellow of the Pennsylvania Academy and a member of the Society of Illustrators, the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and the Philadelphia Sketch Club. He exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago (1923 awards) and at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (1915 prize, 1917 prize, 1918 award). By the early 1920s, he began to produce illustrations for book jackets, books, magazines and advertisements. His career took off and soon his illustrations of cowboys, Indians, Western life, Revolutionary War action and boy scout themes appeared in, or adorned the covers of The Saturday Evening Post, Collier’s, Liberty, McCall’s, Boy’s Life and Gentlemen’s Quarterly. His work also appeared on billboards and advertisements for Stetson hats and Coca-cola. It was conditioned by Hargens that all of his original art was returned to him after being published. His entire body work remained in his studio until his death in 1997; this is largely the reason his paintings have not yet commanded the high prices of his contemporary Saturday Evening Post illustrators (i.e. Rockwell, Leyendecker and N.C. Wyeth).
At first he and his wife worked from their studio in Philadelphia. In 1940, they purchased a property at the intersection of Aquetong and Sawmill roads in Carversville. They commuted to Philadelphia regularly and stayed in South Dakota every summer. Eventually, he set up a studio next to his Carversville home. After moving to Carversville, Hargens began a lifelong friendship with George Sotter. Hargens’ Carversville home was the subject of many of George Sotter’s paintings long before and during the time Hargens lived there. Hargens also studied with Henry Rand...

1939 Original planisphere poster by Lucien Boucher “Nova et Vetera” Air France
Located in PARIS, FR
The 1939 original planisphere poster by Lucien Boucher, titled “Nova et Vetera”, is an exquisite work commissioned by Air France, blending art and cartography to celebrate both the past and future of air travel. Boucher, known for his iconic map designs, produced this piece at the onset of World War II, a period where air travel was rapidly evolving, and Air France was positioning itself as a leader in global aviation.
“Nova et Vetera”, which translates from Latin to "New and Old," captures the transition between the old world of sea-bound exploration and the new age of air travel. This juxtaposition is represented in the map’s composition, featuring routes that stretch across continents, symbolizing the vast reach of Air France’s network. It highlights both traditional and modern elements of travel, emphasizing the airline’s innovation while still grounding it in the historical spirit of exploration.
Lucien Boucher was a master of integrating artistry with geography, and this poster exemplifies his style. The planisphere is both decorative and informative, showcasing the globe and marking the flight paths that connected Europe, Africa, the Americas, Asia, and beyond. With intricate details and imaginative design, Boucher captures the global vision of Air France, reflecting its ambition to connect the world.
The poster is as much a celebration of human ingenuity as it is a technical map. Embellished with celestial motifs and decorative flourishes, the world appears almost mythological, linking the stars, air routes, and geography into one seamless image. The sky above the globe is often depicted with constellations, representing the heavens as both a guiding force for navigation and a romantic backdrop for aviation.
During the late 1930s, Air France was expanding rapidly, building a global network that stretched from Europe to the farthest reaches of the world. This poster reflects the airline’s dominance and aspirations at the time, as well as its pride in the progress of aviation. It also subtly evokes a sense of nostalgia for earlier eras of exploration, blending these two worlds of discovery into a unified visual narrative.
Boucher’s work often walked the line between fantasy and realism. While the map accurately displays the airline’s routes, the decorative elements elevate the poster to a work of art, inspiring viewers with the grandeur and excitement of global travel. The historical references in the title, "Nova et Vetera," suggest that the pioneering spirit of the past—whether by sea or land—is being continued in the modern age through aviation.
By 1939, the world was on the brink of World War II, and the geopolitical landscape was rapidly changing. This poster, with its optimistic tone, served as a reminder of the connectivity and innovation that air travel brought to the world, even in uncertain times. Air France, in commissioning this work, sought to solidify its image as a forward-thinking and globally minded airline, contributing to the modern era of transportation.
Today, Lucien Boucher’s “Nova et Vetera” poster is not only a masterpiece of aviation art but also a historical document that reflects the ambitions and challenges of the late 1930s. It stands as a testament to the golden age of aviation, when air travel was transforming the world and shrinking distances between nations. The poster is cherished by collectors of vintage airline memorabilia...
