This female torso represents the young woman's strength and vulnerability. It´s was conceived in the 70ths and is signed with the artists initials on a thumbprint. Gunnar Knut Nilsson, born 1904 in Karlskrona, died 1995 in Versailles in France, was a Swedish sculptor. Gunnar Nilsson studied watercolor painting and modeling at the Technical Vocational School in Karlskrona in 1918-19 and on his own in addition to working as a clerk at Finspångs Metallwerk. His debut exhibition was in Finspång in 1927. With the help of a local fundraiser, and after the encouragement of Carl Eldh, he traveled to Paris in 1928 to study sculpture for, among others, Charles Despiau and Paul Niclausse. Erté designed Golden Fleece for a Folies-Bergére scene entirtled "The Golden Fleece" and a 1926 George White's Scandals scene entitled "La Toison d'or." Erté, whose artistic style was influenced in part by a childhood admiration of classic Greek art, was always drawn to a good story with a sense of drama – typified by Greek tragedy. The three series that make up her thesis show all center around the woman as an art historical trope who becomes a contemporary archetype of tenderness and tenacity with her own narrative. The tradition of the woman as muse or object is questioned and turned upside down as she gives her women the position of subject, i.e., the position of power. The jars, which uphold pairs of women, are the ultimate overturn of male dominance as she removes and replaces all male characters from famous artworks with women. The couples care for one another and are so consumed in their connection that the viewer is ignored. They do not exist for the viewer’s fantasy because their desires are already fulfilled. Through these three bodies of work, she creates archival objects which combine to build a narrative of women’s power, based on the Love Ethic, as discussed by bell hooks in her book, All About Love. Gordon Powell (American, 1947-) Hand signed and dated verso. Trio 2006 Pine and gesso Dimensions: Framed 23 1/2” x 18” Gordon Powell received his M.F.A. from the University of Illinois in Chicago and his B.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute, where he now serves as a full adjunct professor. His many awards include the prestigious Prix de Rome and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. His work is in numerous collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago. Chicago abstract artist Gordon Powell describes his work as having to do with “building, about putting things together to make a physical form.” He manipulates common objects and positions them in new and unexpected contexts. In this piece, Powell uses pieces of wood to create a sculptural relief. He forms a puzzle-like surface with carved and whitewashed pieces, joins them together to provide linear definition, and adds surface cuts in some areas. Notice how Powell allows the grains, imperfections and natural formations of the wood to be an integral part of his work. "In my practice I work with “fragments” which I make from old pattern paper templates, mdf, and paint. Laid out on the table or floor, the materials are cut into different shapes and the surfaces painted or marked. They are then brought together and arranged or composed into a form and then glued together. The process and choices are the result of improvisation; comparing one fragment next to another to see how they work together." The images and shapes are abstract.His style is similar to the collage and assemblage works of French artist Georges Noel, Arman and Cesar and American artist Cecil Touchon.
