Large Neapolitan 19th Century Hardwood Sculpture of a Crèche Camel.
Located in Cotignac, FR
Large, Neapolitan, late 19th Century hardwood sculpture of a camel. Artist unknown. A beautifully patinated hardwood sculpture. The sculpture is extremely charming and having been handled for over a century has a lovely warm and tactile patina. It is particularly nice too see the work of the craftsperson in the adze and chisel marks along the body of the sculpture. The Italians and most notably the area around Naples has a long and storied tradition in the creation of sculptures for Nativity Scenes. This camel is both an endearing item and a piece of social history. A wonderful addition in its own right to the traditional Christmas scene, by tradition this sculpture was used as a maquette for the production of papier-maché models used in Christmas Creches which have such a long tradition in Italy and throughout the world. Wonderfully carved this piece was used to create hollow models out of papier-maché which were more affordable for this Christmas tradition. Hundreds of strips of papier-maché would be layered onto the figure in all directions. Then using a sharp tool the papier-maché was pushed into all the crevices of the sculpture to give it crisp detail. Once the layers of paper were dry the papier-maché was cut at certain points and lifted off the sculpture. Then finally the resulting body parts were glued back together, painted and patinated ready to be placed in the crèche scene. In the Christian tradition, a nativity scene (also known as a manger scene...

Grande Tête De Femme Au Chapeau Orné (Woman’s Big Head with Decked Hat)
Located in Palo Alto, CA
Created in 1964, this red earthenware clay big rectangular plaque printed with engobe pad is #15 from the edition of 50. This work is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU’ and ‘EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO’ stamps on the reverse. Pablo Picasso Grande Tête De Femme Au Chapeau Orné (Woman’s Big Head with Decked Hat), 1964 A.R. 518 is a remarkable and beautiful work. It represents Picasso’s most important relationships at the time, namely his artistic partnership with the Ramiés and his romance with Jacqueline Roque. It is also notably one of two ceramic works Picasso has ever made of this scale. Picasso takes immense care in depicting this portrait of his greatest muse Jacqueline; its wonderful texture and delicate variations in line weight are testaments to the artist’s innate creative skill. Composed of a simple linear carved design in an earth tone clay plaque...

Master Angel
Located in Wien, Wien
MASTER ANGEL Museum sculpture of the master of Mauer Austrian Danube Region Around 1500/20 Lime wood, carved full round Height 55 cm Provenance: Hofstätter Collection, Vienna The masterful sculpture was made in the workshop of the master of the altar of Mauer around 1500 in Lower Austria. It can be located in the context of the Danube school of the first third of the 16th century, was carved from limewood and is 55 cm tall. Since there are no attributes or context, it is an unknown figure of a carved altar. The master of the altar of Mauer is an anonymous Gothic carver who was active between 1500 and 1525 and received this so-called emergency name through the altar for the parish and pilgrimage church of Mauer near Melk. This winged altar was probably commissioned by Göttweig Abbey in the 1470s and is made of lime wood. It shows an expression in the transition from late Gothic to early Renaissance and is considered the most important carved altar in Lower Austria, created between 1510-15. The figure presented here is very related in its design to the figures of the altar of Mauer. In lively-moving form, the male figure turns his upper body to the right, with his head pointing upward, probably toward the sky. The right leg in lunge emerges from under the frock...

DNA: Minimal Abstract Three Dimensional Dark Metal Wall Sculpture
Located in Hudson, NY
Minimalist, abstract three dimensional wall sculpture in dark oxidized metal “DNA” made by Joe Wheaton in 2019 19 x 12 x 3.5 inches, oxidized steel Hangs of a French cleat, sculpture is lightweight (weighs about 5 lbs.) Signed, verso Joe Wheaton’s unique sculptural designs welded from dark, oxidized brass or brilliant silver steel showcase a contradictory set of relationships; “beautiful yet menacing, “threatening yet delicate” as described by the artist. Wheaton builds his metal compositions using a language of strokes and patterns. Geometric spears, disks and quadrangles alternate with wispy, sharp edged lines that trail off quietly to an undefined point. This visual sweep can be likened to the art of calligraphy, echoing the artist’s interest in early Asian arts and ceramics, as well as printmaking. Artist Statement: Familiar yet strange, beautiful yet menacing, threatening yet delicate. Reaching and solid, my work traverses many contradictions. As in life, beautiful lines have sharp edges, precarious forms balance with great certainty yet are vulnerable to nature's menacing ways. I am interested in using recognizable materials and relationships in configurations that will serve to re-evaluate how one perceives what might at first seem obvious. Dark forms stand in front of their ever-changing shadows. Lines motion and engage, but are like life, elusive and mysterious. Minimalist Abstract Color Field Painting in Lime Green and Yellows(C20-7)
Located in Hudson, NY
Nature-Inspired Minimalist Abstract Color Field painting on three wood panels in shades of Lime Green and yellows Acrylic on 3 panels Each panel is 24 x 24 x 2 inches can be oriented vertically or horizontally Overall measurement for horizontal install with 1-2 inch recommended spacing, 24 x 76 x 2 inches horizontally We are amazed by Ginny Fox's ability to achieve multiple flawless layers of acrylic paint, wiping it on and off with cotton cloth, to create a subtle yet distinctive woven texture on a smooth surface. The artist's work is inspired by patterns found in nature such as tree rings, rock lines, ethereal horizons, or water ripples. It appears as though a light source is originating behind the panel, glowing softly in a pale, dreamy green palette. This unique surface spreads all the way to the very edge of each panel. The 2 inch deep sides are cleanly painted white for a seamless finish. These panels hang flush to the wall by resting on two nails on either side of the panel, and can be arranged in any number of ways, highlighting the work's sculptural element. Artist's Statement: My paintings merge the detailed textures and colors found in the natural world with the linear and geometric patterns visible in industrial and architectural structures. The interplay of these elements drives the work and provides a platform for constant change and narrative. By simultaneously layering and removing paint with rags instead of brushes, my hand is directly involved with the process. Each piece contains multiple panels that evoke a nuanced and evolving universe. Ginny Fox builds up each non-representational piece with overlapping streaks of paint that frequently span two or three panels. Working with rags instead of brushes, Fox’s hand moves along parallel paths, emergent colors cascading gently towards the edges of the composition's plane. There’s something vaporous to the outer layers of the work, the interwoven strands of color offering glimpses at the painting’s earthy base and hinting at the artist’s gradual process.
