A tall, modified columnar vase with incised catfish by Canadian-American ceramist Sasha Makovkin (1928-2003). Made of a white clay body. Glaze in varied shades of gray, blue and green. Signed and titled by the artist including trademark on the bottom: "Makovkin," "Blue Catfish." Dimensions: 14.25 Height x 4.75" Top x 5.13" Base. Northern California potter Sasha Makovkin, originally from Vancouver, B.C. and of Russian descent, moved to California in 1954 to work at Heath Ceramics in Sausalito in order to get industrial experience. During the 1050s, Makovkin exhibited at the Association of San Francisco Potters and at the San Francisco Art Festivals. Five years later after arriving in California, Makovkin took some samples of his ceramics to Gumps, a high-end department store in San Francisco. Impressed with his work, Gumps featured Makovkin’s work in the mail floor exhibits for the next three years. Kline seeks symbiosis in the relationship of surfaces to forms and addresses the hierarchy of importance between the form itself and the image or decoration. Objects both functional and decorative, factor into the banality and routineness of daily life. As the current political and social climate continues to shift, She seeks to compare past and present means of the production of goods and labor. Surface design inspired by vintage textile prints from family quilts and other historical motifs appear in Kline's work. The vessel acts as a stand in for the body and a metaphor for preservation. Kline's series of jars and jugs are intended to preserve memories of family members and places by using specific colors, patterns and objects she remembers from childhood to the present. Rachel Hubbard Kline is an art educator and artist in her hometown Kansas City, MO. With a background in fashion and art history, she explores relationships of fine art and craft in the disciplines of drawing, painting, ceramics, and fiber. Hubbard draws on her Midwestern roots and ties to rural farm life to reflect on past ways of life based on collections and artifacts. Hubbard Kline has been the recipient of educator residencies at the Kansas City Art Institute, a participant in the Connecting Collections teacher institute in New York, and Educator Conferences and AP Teacher Training at the Savannah College of Art and Design. She earned a Master of Arts in Teaching from Park University in 2010, a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Connecticut in 2007, and attended Parsons School of Design. She is currently pursuing her Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Cindy Avroch is a multi-talented artist who began her career by following in her mother’s footsteps. Cindy’s first love was always drawing, painting and sculpting, although Cindy is also a trained dancer. While other little girls could be seen carrying Barbie dolls around, Cindy would be juggling a sketchbook, pencils and an eraser in her hands. Among her earlier accomplishments, she received a degree in textile design from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, and a scholarship to study at Winchester School of Art in England.

"Protected Spirits" is a sculpture carved from Opal stone signed Picket, who is part of the Shona tribe in Zimbabwe. It depicts two abstracted figures, presumably spirits, seeming to float upwards. 38 1/2" x 13 1/2" x 7 1/4" Picket Mazhindu Bumhira was born 1968 in the Seke communal lands about 5 km. from Harare, Zimbabwe. Picket had a passion for art from childhood and during his school days he loved drawing and painting. He was very inspired by sculpture of the late John Takawira, one of Zimbabwe's first generation of Shona sculptors, whom he met when Picket went to Chapungu. They then agreed to work together. Later he started to sculpt on his own. Some of his works made the headlines in the newspapers, including "Spirit of Love," which was exhibited in Victoria Falls during Arts Gala. He exhibited in the UK and in Germany. He was among the sculptors who went to China for an exhibition at the Poverty Reduction Summit. Picket likes working on springstone and opal and especially enjoys making abstracts. Shona artists and crafts people have been working in different media for generations. These include paintings, pottery, basket ware, wood carvings, and sculpture done in metal as well as the stone carvings. While there is not a long standing tradition of sculpture in what is now Zimbabwe (formerly Southern Rhodesia), stone carvings dating from the 15th century were seen in Great Zimbabwe, an excavated temple near Bulawayo.
