Aaron Perkins Chikumbirike
'Healing and Diagnosing' original Shona stone sculpture by Aaron P. Chikumbirike

2004

About the Item

'Healing and Diagnosing' is an original stone sculpture by the Zimbabwean sculptor Aaron Perkins Chikumbirike. The sculpture presents a highly stylized figural grouping, as is so often desired in the works of Shona artists: Two figures stand side by side, one larger than the other and both looking directly forward. Their bodies taper to a small point at their feet, where they join to a small circular base. The long curving hand of the larger figure holds a traditional healer's medicine stick, the hair flowing out of which is carved with fine lines contrasting the polished surface of the figures. The overall affect of the sculpture contains the power and comprehension of healing. springstone and fruit serpentine 22 x 7.25 x 4 inches Signed A. Chikumbirike along base Overall excellent condition with no signs of wear, cracking or chipping Born in Wedza District, Zimbabwe on the 29th of August 1951, Aaron Chikumbirike is the eldest son in a family of ten brothers, some of whom are among the leading artists of Zimbabwe. He was educated at Saint Anthony’s Primary School, Saint Mary’s and Saint Robert’s Secondary Schools, started carving sculptures as a hobby, and became a full time sculptor soon after leaving school in 1969. An artist who is successful in mixed media sculpture using stone types including opal, cobalt, springstone, verdite, serpentine and jade, Aaron owes his success to his imagination and to his own creativity. His works are all very original. He has served with some leading galleries, including the Tengenenge Sculpture Village and the Chapungu Sculpture Park in Harare. His work has been exhibited in and outside of Zimbabwe including The Zimbabwe Annual Heritage in 1991 and 1993. Aaron Chikumbirike has works in the National Gallery’s overseas permanent collections and is a member of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe. A Christian who boasts his life outside crime, Aaron is an oral historian. A member of the Mbire group who prides his totem, the baboon, he is well known for counselling and telling tales of fun. Aaron is married with four children. He has extended his career to his children who also bear a promise of success.

  • 'Dancing in the Wind' original Shona stone sculpture by Wellington Karuru
    Located in Milwaukee, WI
'Dancing in the Wind' is an original opal serpentine sculpture by the Zimbabwean artist Wellington Karuru. The artist presents an elegant and curvilinear figure of a woman, her hair seeming to billow upward and behind her. The sculpture is on one hand a celebration of the stone material, and on the other it calls back to art historical precedent: her body is brought to a high polish, reflecting the softness of skin, while her hair is left rough-hewn to create the effect of the untamed wind. At the same time, the woman's body is highly stylized and emphasizes her hips and belly, recalling Paleolithic "Venus" sculptures like the lauded Venus of Willendorf and thusly ideas of maternity and womanhood. opal stone (serpentine) not signed 23" high x 8" widest point x 4" smallest point, sculpture 4"x4"x4", sculpture bottom 1 x 6 x 6 inches, base Overall excellent condition with no signs of wear Sculpture comes with base. Born on August 17, 1976, Wellington Karuru is the first born to a family of five children and has two brothers and two sisters. As the first born child in a Zimbabwean family, many responsibilities were shouldered upon Wellington. Both his brothers, Gilbert and Esau, are also talented sculptors. He completed his primary and secondary education in Mashonaland West Province and was involved in almost every sporting activity at the school. After he graduated, he was employed at National Foods LTD where he worked as a machine operator for a period of four years and was later promoted to work as a sales clerk. In his free time he assisted some well known artists in sculpting, was able to learn much from them and soon thereafter started to develop his own talent and unique style. Inspired by such well known sculptors such as Gardener Sango and Garison Muchinjili, Wellington started sculpting small pieces for himself and soon found a buyer for his favorite piece titled ‘A Cry For Help’. From that day forward, he has never looked back. He eventually went to work with Garison Machinjili whose influence is clearly shown in his work. Some of his pieces have been chosen already for international exhibitions and galleries. Well established and internationally renowned artists like Joe Mutasa...

  • "Traditional Dresser, " Opal Stone Sculpture by Shona Sculptor Washington Msonza
    By Washington Msonza
    Located in Milwaukee, WI
"Traditional Dresser" is an original opal serpentine sculpture signed by the Zimbabwean artist Washington Msonza. The sculpture features a single elegant figure in a flowing gown, standing tall and averting her gaze as she clutches the veil that envelops her. Msonza emphasizes the materiality of the work, as is so desired of artists trained in the Shona tradition, by differentiating between the dark, smooth polish of her skin and the lighter textured surface of her clothes. Even more, passages of the surface are left in the serpentine's rough natural state, allowing the green-colored stone to contrast with the red-orange oxidization of its environment. opal stone (serpentine) 37.5 x 12.5 x 13 inches signed "Msonza W" on reverse along base Overall good condition; some minor scratches, likely as the sculpture left artist's studio. Washington Msonza was born in 1966 in Domboshava where he attended primary school. He then moved to Chitungwiza to attend secondary schooling. While in school, he spent most of his time watching his brother-in-law Albert Mamvura also a sculptor, whose workshop was close to his house. In 1988 Msonza began assisting Albert full time, while simultaneously gaining experience by watching other well known artists in the area including Gedion Nyanhongo...
