Mid Century Mt. Rose Landscape

By Nancy Coe

Located in Soquel, CA

Bold mid century impasto landscape of Mt. Rose in oil by Nancy Coe (American, 1932-1998), c.1968. This piece has evocative, heavy textures from the artist's use of a palette knife. Signed in pen in the lower right corner. Gallery sticker on back of frame. Presented in a copper-colored frame. Image size: 27.25"H x 28.38"W Nancy Patricia Coe (American, 1932-1998), was born in San Jose, California to Henry Surtcliff Coe and spent most of her life on Rancho San Felipe in a two-story, brick colonial residence, originally built by her father, on a commercial cattle ranch. With its weeping willow trees and picturesque red barn, it made for a happy home nestled in the heart of San Felipe Valley. Henry Coe State Park is named after her Grandfather Henry Willard Coe. She studied art at Stanford University and graduated in the 1950's. While there, she met S. Gainer Pillsbury, MD, a fellow alumnus, whom she married on June 19, 1956. While an accomplished user of charcoals and Conte crayons, Ms. Coe painted in primarily in oils, showing and winning awards in Reno, Nevada in the early 1960's. Her works, including landscapes and portraits, have been featured in numerous newspaper articles in the Reno Gazette-Journal. Her palette-knife painting of Salvador and Virginia Prado, two ranch hands, was featured on the cover of a Mexican-American history textbook, A Guide to the Study of the Mexican-American by Feliciano Rivera (1969) and published at San Jose State University. Her paintings of Sada S. Coe (her aunt) and Henry “Harry” W. Coe, Jr. are featured in the museum at Henry Coe State Park in Morgan Hill...

Overlooking Santa Cruz and Monterey Bay - Plein Air Landscape in Oil on Canvas Gorgeous plein air landscape of Santa Cruz and Monterey Bay by Brian Rounds (American, b. 1968). Grey-purple clouds have rolled in over Santa Cruz around sunset, casting shadows and creating highlights in the city. Streaks of light shine through the clouds, and there is a yellow glow at the edge of the water in the distance. This piece is completed in a loose, abstracted style that captures the rapidly changing scenery. Signed and dated by the artist on verso. Unframed, but the artist has painted the edges black to allow for a frame-less display. Canvas size: 24"H x 30"W Acquired directly from the artist. Brian Rounds (American, b. 1968) is an award-winning artist who grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and is now based out of Santa Cruz, California. Frederic Porter Vinton Landscape Oil Painting, Polling, Germany 1877

Located in Milford, NH

A well executed impressionist landscape of a cottage near a pond in Polling, Germany by American artist Frederic Porter Vinton (1846-1911). Vinton was born in Bangor, Maine, studied with William Morris Hunt, as well as taking drawing classes with the renowned anatomist, Dr. William Rimmer at the Lowell Institute in Boston and was drawing from casts at the Athenaeum. By 1874, Vinton saved enough money working at a local bank and writing art criticism for the Boston Advertiser to study in Europe. His first year in Europe he studied under Léon Bonnât in Paris and later, with the encouragement of Frank Duveneck, he went to the Royal Academy in Munich to study with Mauger, Carl Piloty, and Wilhelm von Diez. In 1875, preferring the French method of painting, Vinton returned to Paris to become one of Jean Paul Laurens' first American students. He returned to Boston in 1879 and, just a few years later in 1882, there would be a second study tour to Europe with artists William Merritt Chase and Robert Blum. This trip was spent in Spain studying the work of the Spanish master, Velázquez. His third trip to Europe came shortly after marrying Annie M...
