Detailed watercolor of Monument Valley by Albert DeRome (American, 1885-1959). The viewer is looking out over the valley from a high vantage point, with towering mesas in the distance. In the foreground, there are some shrubs and a small tree to the right side of the composition. DeRome has created a sense of vast distance by rendering the far background with a hazy quality while keeping the foreground in clear focus. Signed "Albert DeRome" in the lower right corner. Inscription on verso as a gift to the artist's mother. Purchased from the estate of the artist Patterson's Antiques, Los Gatos. Presented in a wood frame with a new white mat. Usually his palette was bright in both oil and watercolor, but he did the occasional nocturne. Scholars have compared his painting style and subjects to those of Thomas Hill and Albert Bierstadt. However, Albert De Rome never affiliated with any formal group of painters, although he had many close friends including Percy Gray, Gunnar Widforss and Will Sparks. As a young man, Thomas De Rome worked at the Congress Spring Hotel in Saratoga, and in San Francisco at the Globe Foundry, owned by an uncle. Time to Go Home Papa

Located in San Francisco, CA

This artwork titled "Time to go Home Papa" c.1950 is a watercolor on paper by noted American artist Darrell Craig McClure, 1903-1987 It is signed at the lower right corner by the artist. The artwork size is 14.85 x 21.5 inches, framed is 24 x 30 inches. It is custom framed in a wooden gold frame, with gold color spacer. It is in excellent condition, the colors are fresh and bright. About the artist: Born in Ukiah Feb 25 1903, he showed his interest in cartooning at a very early age. One of his cartoons appeared in the old Ukiah Republican Press when he was nine years old. His love for the sailing schooners he served on as a young man inspired him to do a series of paintings on the vessels. McClure's work has been favorably received on both the East and West Coast, and a number of his paintings hang in the Maritime Museum in San Francisco. He studied at a cartoon school in San Francisco and the California School of Fine Arts. Instructors included Maynard Dixon, Harold Von Schmidt and Clarence Mackey, leading artists of the day. At the age of 17, he began his love affair with the sea, taking his first voyage on the Annie Johnson, destined for Hawaii. At 19 he shipped out for the East Coast aboard the freighter, Artiagas, and worked up and down the coast until friends were instrumental in getting him a job as an apprentice cartoonist with Hearst's King Features. He was with the newspaper for 37 years. Thirty-one were spent drawing the Annie Rooney cartoon.
