Wonderful Impressionist view of St. Marks Square, Venice. Pam Masco was an American from Massachusetts, and a graduate of the School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts (1976). She was married to the English artist John Heseltine. Her work is in well-known private and corporate collections and has been shown at the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Watercolour Society and other London Galleries as well as in the Provinces. She travelled throughout the U.S.A. and Europe and painted American and European subjects, portraits, landscape and figure compositions, still life and interiors. From 1978 she was involved in drawing, painting, technical painting courses, watercolour and graphic design. She illustrated for major British and American publishers until 1988. About the artist: Sid Cedargreen was a mid-century painter whose art beautifully depicted the desert Southwest. In 1958, Mr. Cedargreen was part of an art collective that transformed Tubac into an art colony. While in Tubac, he founded the Tubac Center for the Arts and the Santa Cruz Art Association. During this time, he was the winner of the distinguished Master Mead award for depicting the Southwest. His paintings are beautiful landscapes featuring areas in Arizona and all around the American Southwest. He continued to live in Arizona and paint its beauty for several years. In 2011, Sid Cedargreen passed away at the age of 89. After he passed away, Mr. Cedargreen's family found a plethora of paintings that Cedargeen had been storing in his house. This Winslow Homer woodcut engraving entitled "Skating on the Ladies' Skating-Pond in Central Park, New York", was published in Harper's Weekly in the January 28, 1860 edition. It depicts a large number of men, women and children skating on a recently opened pond in Central Park. At the time of publication of this engraving, Central Park was in the early stages of construction. This engraving documents the very early appearance of Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux's masterpiece of landscape design. According to Olmsted, the park was "of great importance as the first real Park made in this century – a democratic development of the highest significance". The people of New York were very proud of the plans for their park. It was stated at the time: "Our Park, which is progressing very satisfactorily under the management of the Commissioners, will undoubtedly be, one of these days, one of the finest place of the kind in the world...Those who saw the Park before the engineers went to work on it are amazed at the beautiful sites which have been contrived with such unpromising materials; all fair persons believe that the enterprise is managed with honesty and good taste." Skating was rapidly rising in national popularity in part due to the opening of Central Park’s lake to skaters on a Sunday in December 1858 with 300 participants. The following Sunday it attracted ten thousand skaters. By Christmas Day, a reported 50,000 people came to the park, most of them to skate. This artwork "Seascape, California Coast" is an oil painting on canvas by noted California artist Willam Henry Blackman, b.1930. It is signed at the lower left corner by the artist, also stamped signed in the back. The canvas size is 23.75 x 48 inches. It is in excellent condition. About the artist: William H. Blackman was born February 2, 1930 in San Diego. He spent most of his early years in West Los Angeles. He became interested in art at about the age of 12 when he painted his first oil painting. In high school he majored in art so he could experiment with various mediums to find ways to interpret his ideas. In December of 1948 he joined the Navy and was stationed in Hawaii. After his tour of duty he returned to California and attended Woodbury College to learn about advertising and the graphic arts. While there, he met his wife Shirley, who coincidentally came from the Big Island of Hawaii. They were married on June 11, 1955 in her home town of Honokaa. When they returned he began his career in the graphic arts. In 1960 they began their family and moved to a new home in the San Fernando Valley. Meanwhile, Bill had become interested in the fine arts again. His position as an advertising production manger put him in contact with art directors and they would lunch together and then visit various art galleries in the area. He began oil painting again as a hobby. In 1964 he made an important contact through an associate at his agency. This person was a vice-president at Aaron Brothers Galleries and purchased paintings for them. They had showrooms in various major cities and sold original framed paintings to art galleries and furniture stores. He said they could possibly sell some of his seascapes so Bill began painting in his spare time. Gradually, they sold more than he could produce so Bill made the decision to leave the advertising business and devote his time to painting. In 1965 the Blackman's moved to Thousand Oaks, California. He began his career as a fine artist and to this day resides in Thousand Oaks. He contracted with Aaron Brothers to be his exclusive agents and began specializing in seascapes. After a few years he added landscapes and some other subjects. Bluebonnet landscapes and Padre Island seascapes were popular in the Dallas showroom. He and his family vacationed frequently in Hawaii and that became another source of inspiration. There, he was represented by the Davis Gallery in Honolulu. A good relationship with "Barney" Davis continued after the closing of the Aaron Brothers Wholesale Division in 1980. He painted for the Davis Gallery for about 8 years until they closed due to illness. Afterwards, he was contacted by Kobayashi Art Enterprises and has been represented by them. In 1980 he began teaching in private studios around the country, demonstrating his method of painting various subjects. During the latter part of the 80"s he was approached by Susan Scheewe Publishing to author and illustrate a book showing his way of painting. The first was published in 1990 and he has authored four other books since then. He demontrated six different instructional video tapes that were produced by his artist friend Gary Jenkins. Gary, who was helpful introducing Bill to the teaching business, was also an artist for Aaron Brothers Galleries. William Blackman is a published artist. Schmitt Oil Still Life No 10" Painter, watercolorist, illustrator and teacher, Paul Schmitt was born in Philadelphia, in 1893 and moved to San Francisco in 1898 where he lived until the 1906 earthquake took his family home. He then moved to the Fruitvale district of Oakland. He died of natural causes at the age of 90 in San Leandro, California. Paul Schmitt studied under Perham Wilhelm Nahl, at the California College of Arts and Crafts. He also learned various crafts, woodworking and carving skills from his father, Herman Schmitt, a German wood carver working in San Francisco. Herman's works are still found in various San Francisco public buildings including the city hall chambers and the garden court of the Palace Hotel. Schmitt joined twelve other local San Francisco artists to form the group called "The Thirteen Watercolorists", a group that eventually evolved into the Society of Western Artists. Their early members included Alfred Owles, Will Cameron, Maurice Logan, Maynard Dixon and many others. Paul worked with engineers and architects doing models of many projects. He was versatile in that he also did illustrations for various publications and advertisers. He fathered thirteen children. In the late 1930's he decided to accept a teaching position in the local adult schools where he retired in his eighties. Paul was very fond of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and yearly took his large family there on camping /sketching trips. He did a series of oils of the California missions. He also traveled extensively on sketching trips including Mexico where he did a series of Mexican churches...
