A colorful Cape Ann, Massachusetts marine harbor scene with boats docked by American artist Emile Albert Gruppé (1896-1978). Gruppé was born in Rochester, NY, and is renowned for his New England landscapes and vigorous portrayals of the harbors and houses of Gloucester, Massachusetts. The son of landscape artist Charles P. Gruppé (1860-1940), Emile enjoyed a long and successful career that spanned over six decades.In 1925, Gruppé began spending summers in Gloucester. He established a studio on Rocky Neck in East Gloucester where he taught plein-air classes. Barbara and her husband Chuck moved to Fredericksburg in 2005 after living many years in Louisiana, where she taught art at Baton Rouge Lutheran School. Soon after moving home to Texas, she began painting seriously. She has studied with Ian Roberts, Kevin Macpherson, Jill Carver, Lori Putnam, and (of course!) Chuck Mauldin. Barbara’s work has been accepted in several art events, such as the Women Artists of the West National Show, Contemporary Masters Invitational Art Show in Fredericksburg, the Mountain Oyster Club Art Show, the Plein Air Artists Colorado National Juried Art Exhibition, The Museum of Western Art (Kerrville, TX) “The Party” Art Exhibition and Sale, and others.
Her paintings are characterized by color. “I like to emphasize the color that I see, as a creative and emotional response to the landscape.” She works with a limited palette, using a small number of pigments to mix colors, which results in beautiful color harmony.
Barbara has focused her attention on the Texas landscape, especially on prickly pear cactus. Cactus is fun to paint. It has a multitude of interesting colors, which are an expression of the harshness of the environment and the amount of direct sun. In spring the colors are lighter and more mellow, and the flowers of late spring are a vibrant yellow and rose, sometimes orange. She enjoys plein air work, accepting the challenges of color, design, and the environment (critters and weather). Texas abounds with variety and inspiration; there is always another painting just around the corner!

American Impressionist Paul Cornoyer, "Bearksin Neck, Rockport"

Paul Cornoyer, born in 1864 in St. Louis, Missouri, was an American Impressionist artist. Initially studying at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts under Halsey C. Ives, he began his artistic journey painting in a style reminiscent of the Barbizon School. His first exhibition took place in 1887, followed by further studies in Paris at the Académie Julian under notable instructors such as Jules Lefebre, Louis Blanc, and Benjamin Constant. Inspired by French Impressionism during his travels to Paris, London, and Venice, Cornoyer embraced a more fluid and tonal style, particularly evident in his landscapes and cityscapes.
Returning to St. Louis in 1894, he painted a mural at the Planters Hotel, depicting the city's birth. Over the next six years, little is known about his work except for the creation of a significant triptych titled "A View of St. Louis," which became iconic for the city.
Encouraged by the artist William Merritt Chase, Cornoyer moved to New York City in 1899, where he gained recognition for his urban cityscapes, particularly scenes after rainfall. Capturing the essence of city life with vivid depictions of streets, carriages, and towering buildings, Cornoyer's work became synonymous with New York's urban landscape. He also taught at the Mechanics Institute and mingled with prominent artists such as Childe Hassam and J. Alden Weir, expanding his artistic circle to include New England art schools.
In 1917, Cornoyer relocated permanently to Massachusetts, establishing his studio in East Gloucester. He played a pivotal role in founding the Gloucester Art...

Frank Weston Benson, well known for his American impressionist paintings, also produced an incredible body of prints - etchings, drypoints, and a few lithographs. Born and raised on the North Shore of Massachusetts, Benson, a natural outdoorsman, grew up sailing, fishing, and hunting. From a young age, he was fascinated with drawing and birding – this keen interest continued throughout his life.
His first art instruction was with Otto Grundman at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and then in 1883 in Paris at the Academie Julian where he studied the rigorous ‘ecole des beaux arts’ approach to drawing and painting for two years.
