"Hill at Giverny" is an oil on canvas painting made in 1915 by Frederick Carl Frieseke. The work is signed in the lower left, "F.C. Frieseke". The framed sized is 36 x 42 x 4 1/8 inches. Frieseke trained at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Académie Julian. He worked in the style known as Decorative Impressionism, known for very bright colors, rough brushstrokes, and lack of shadows, as seen in the work. Frieseke exhibited his work in 1910 at Madison Gallery in New York alongside Guy Rose, Richard Edward Miller, Lawton S. Parker, Edward W. Greacen, and Karl Anderson, where they were termed "The Giverny Group." From 1906 to 1919, Frieseke spent summers in an artist colony in Giverny. There, he was next-door neighbors with Claude Monet and his house had been previously owned by Theodore Robinson. Giverny landscape and gardens were a prominent subject matter for Frieseke at this point in his career. His works often concentrated on the various effects of dappled sunlight playing upon his beautiful, natural surroundings. Frieseke is featured in the collections of major museums such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., Dallas Museum of Art, and Art Institute of Chicago. Frederick Carl Frieseke was a member of the third generation of American painters to inhabit and find inspiration from Giverny, France. His use of bright colors and light, to depict the female figure, defined the style of the Giverny group during his residence, synthesizing aspects of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. Born in the United States, Frieseke studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York. In 1898, he moved to Paris to enroll in the Académie Julian, where he studied under Benjamin Constant and Jean-Paul Laurens. During this time, Frieseke also briefly studied with James A. Whistler, who would prove to be a great inspiration in Frieseke’s early works. From Whistler, Frieseke adopted a tonalist palette and a decorative approach to figurative painting.
