Antique Sofa Table For Sale on 1stDibs
Find many varieties of an authentic antique sofa table available at 1stDibs. An antique sofa table — often made from wood, mahogany and metal — can elevate any home. Your living room may not be complete without an antique sofa table — find older editions for sale from the 18th Century and newer versions made as recently as the 20th Century. When you’re browsing for the right antique sofa table, those designed in Regency, Georgian and Victorian styles are of considerable interest. Many designers have produced at least one well-made antique sofa table over the years, but those crafted by Emile Gallé, Gillows of Lancaster & London and A.J. Iversen are often thought to be among the most beautiful.
How Much is a Antique Sofa Table?
Prices for an antique sofa table can differ depending upon size, time period and other attributes — at 1stDibs, they begin at $199 and can go as high as $161,500, while the average can fetch as much as $4,027.
Finding the Right Tables for You
The right vintage, new or antique tables can help make any space in your home stand out.
Over the years, the variety of tables available to us, as well as our specific needs for said tables, has broadened. Today, with all manner of these must-have furnishings differing in shape, material and style, any dining room table can shine just as brightly as the guests who gather around it.
Remember, when shopping for a dining table, it must fit your dining area, and you need to account for space around the table too — think outside the box, as an oval dining table may work for tighter spaces. Alternatively, if you’ve got the room, a Regency-style dining table can elevate any formal occasion at mealtime.
Innovative furniture makers and designers have also redefined what a table can be. Whether it’s an unconventional Ping-Pong table, a brass side table to display your treasured collectibles or a Louis Vuitton steamer trunk to add an air of nostalgia to your loft, your table can say a lot about you.
The visionary work of French designer Xavier Lavergne, for example, includes tables that draw on the forms of celestial bodies as often as they do aquatic creatures or fossils. Elsewhere, Italian architect Gae Aulenti, who looked to Roman architecture in crafting her stately Jumbo coffee table, created clever glass-topped mobile coffee tables that move on bicycle tires or sculpted wood wheels for Fontana Arte.
Coffee and cocktail tables can serve as a room’s centerpiece with attention-grabbing details and colors. Glass varieties will keep your hardwood flooring and dazzling area rugs on display, while a marble or stone coffee table in a modern interior can showcase your prized art books and decorative objects. A unique vintage desk or writing table can bring sophistication and even a bit of spice to your work life.
No matter your desired form or function, a quality table for your living space is a sound investment. On 1stDibs, browse a collection of vintage, new and antique bedside tables, mid-century end tables and more .
Questions About Antique Sofa Table
How high should a sofa table be?
1 Answer1stDibs ExpertMay 22, 2019A sofa table, or a console, should be the same height as the sofa in front of it.
- 1stDibs ExpertMay 22, 2019
The difference between a sofa table and a coffee table is that a sofa table is always behind the sofa and a coffee table is in front of it. Additionally, a sofa table is the same height as the sofa and a coffee table is much shorter.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022A sofa table is a long and narrow table that’s designed to sit behind a couch. They are also called console tables and hall tables because their thin nature makes them great accent pieces in these places as well. Shop a collection of furniture from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
What is a sofa set table called?
1 Answer1stDibs ExpertSeptember 23, 2024What a sofa set table is called depends on its size and design. A sofa set most often includes a low table designed to be placed in front of the sofa. These tables are usually called coffee tables. However, a set may also contain smaller, taller tables for positioning on either end of the couch. This type of table is an end table or side table. In addition, a sofa set may provide a sofa table or console table, which is a taller, longer table that is often placed behind a sofa. Shop a selection of sofa sets and accent tables on 1stDibs.- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 25, 2024No, a side table shouldn't always be lower than a sofa. To make it easy to access items on a table, a sofa's arms should generally be no more than 2 to 3 inches above or below the tabletop. This rule of thumb differs from the one for coffee tables, which should be as tall or 1 to 2 inches shorter than the seat height of the sofa to ensure a balanced look. Explore a large selection of side tables on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 3, 2023To determine what size lamp should be on a sofa table, measure the table from the bottom of the legs to the tabletop. Then, choose a lamp that is equal to or up to 1.5 times taller than the table. Shop a range of table lamps from some of the world's top sellers on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertMay 22, 2019
The main difference between a console and a sofa table is that a console can be placed anywhere in the home (against a wall in a hallway or under a television in the living room) and a sofa table is limited to being behind a sofa.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022The right table to go with a Noguchi sofa is really a matter of preference. Noguchi’s own iconic coffee table is a common pairing for their freeform sofas. On 1stDibs, you’ll find a large collection of vintage and contemporary Isamu Noguchi furniture from some of the world’s top sellers.
- 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 16, 2026As a general rule, choose a coffee table roughly two-thirds the length of the sofa, with the top 1 to 2 inches lower than the seat cushions.
- 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 16, 2026Antique generally means 100+ years old, while vintage typically covers 20 to 99 years, which includes most mid-century pieces.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 13, 2024Compared to a sofa, a coffee table should be about two-thirds of the length of a sofa. For example, if a sofa is 95 inches long, the coffee table should be roughly 62 inches wide to create a balanced look. In terms of height, a sofa should be around 2 inches taller than the coffee table. On 1stDibs, shop a diverse assortment of coffee tables.
How do I identify an antique table?
2 Answers1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021You can identify an antique table in a number of ways. The first clue that a table is antique is the joinery. If a piece of furniture is dovetailed by hand, it only has a couple of dovetails, which are uneven. Also, antique tables are not defined by perfect symmetry. Lastly, antique tables were typically made of oak, mahogany, and walnut.
Bonnin Ashley Antiques IncFebruary 23, 2021In addition to the joinery you can check the bottoms of the drawers and the backs of the cabinets. If they were made prior to 1850 then the wood will most likely be dimensioned by hand. It will be uneven to the touch. The secondary wood that receives the veneer will have been scraped smooth but drawer bottoms, backs and bottoms are often left less finished. What is an antique rent table?
2 Answers1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022An antique rent table is a piece of furniture that landlords and tenants used to exchange rent. The rent money would be placed in one drawer, the table would rotate for the landlord to receive. It was considered polite and gentlemanly to pay rent this way. Shop a collection of antique rent tables from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022A rent table is a small circular or polygonal table with drawers. Rent tables frequently had drawers labeled for the days of the week, and English landlords in the 18th century often used them to collect rent. On 1stDibs, shop antique rent tables from some of the world’s top sellers.- 1stDibs ExpertOctober 24, 2024To tell if a kitchen table is antique, look under the table and on the legs for a maker's mark. It may be carved, branded or stamped onto the surface or appear on a paper or metal label. Using the marking, you can consult trusted online resources to learn about the maker and view catalogues of their pieces, searching for tables similar to yours. If your kitchen table was produced at least 100 years ago, it is an antique. Keep in mind that not all antique furnishings have maker's markings. In the event that you're unable to locate a mark, a certified appraiser or knowledgeable antique dealer can evaluate your piece for you. On 1stDibs, explore a diverse assortment of tables.
- 1stDibs ExpertMay 5, 2023To determine whether a side table is an antique, closely examine its details. Older pieces will typically have telltale features like wood pegs, hand-cut dovetails with some slight imperfections and mortise-and-tenon construction. Tables that are a consistent color throughout or have machine-cut moldings or carvings are unlikely to be antiques. A certified appraiser or knowledgeable antiques dealer can be a helpful resource when dating tables. Shop a collection of antique, vintage and modern side tables on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022To identify your antique dining table, first check to see if there is a maker’s mark on the underside. If there are no identifying marks or stamps, a furniture appraiser can check the style and the hardwood used to identify your piece. Shop a collection of antique furniture from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 16, 2026Keep it out of direct sun and away from heat, dust with a soft cloth, and wax or polish sparingly.
- 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 16, 2026Yes. Most table lamps accept standard harp and finial sizes, so a replacement shade can update the look without altering the base.
- 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2023While you can look for markings and other details to try and determine the maker, the best way to identify an antique drop leaf table is to work with a certified appraiser. Trusted online venues and search engines can be helpful when conducting research on a specific collectible, piece of jewelry, art work or other item about which you may have questions, but qualified professionals, such as an antiques dealer or an appraiser at an auction house, have the knowledge and experience needed to make more accurate identifications. Shop a selection of antique, vintage and modern tables on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 16, 2026Stick to the wattage noted in the listing, typically 40 to 60 watts for standard incandescent-equivalent bulbs, to avoid overheating older wiring.
