Michael Thonet (1796-1871) was the German-Austrian inventor of the process of bentwood production, recognized by flowing forms and the resulting lightweight product.

By 1870, Thonet furniture had undoubtedly reached the stage at which the technical development of the bentwood process matched a formal design that remains valid to this day.
