Thonet Child Chair No14 webbing seat / Vienna / Bentwood / 1859

About the Item

The Mother of all child’s chairs! Timeless, stimulating, perfect - what is said about “the chair of chairs” Designed in 1859 - Developed in 1860 by one of the sons of company founder Michael Thonet. A simple, uncomplicated shape and a high degree of functionality. Michael Thonet revolutionized the furniture world since the chair was affordable and therefore accessible to the masses. Early production of the Thonet No14 child chair. Period cane webbing seat in very good condition. Glued under seat. Thonet was the first company to mass manufacture furniture designed specifically for children. The first examples appeared in their 1866 catalogue. This particular chair is derived from the adult-size version of Thonet's 'Chair no 14', which is also known as 'The Bistro Chair' and the 'Coffee Shop Chair'. Available from 1859, it was Thonet's most commercially successful model, and it is said that 50 million of them were made just between 1859 and 1896. Gebrüder Thonet Vienna - the oldest surviving furniture company in the world -began its long life in 1819, when cabinetmaker Michael Thonet (1796-1871) established a furniture workshop in Boppard, Germany. A proponent of the Biedermeier style, he specialized in chairs, tables, and storage pieces characterized by clean lines, reduced ornamentation, and an emphasis on functionalist principles. By the 1830s, Thonet’s experiments in laminated and steam-bent wood furniture, like his famous Boppard Chair (1836), brought international acclaim. Thonet’s designs achieved a combination of lightness, durability, and comfort unknown in European furniture at the time.
