Finding the Right Dining Room Tables for You

Antique and vintage dining room tables have long been the anchor of the home's most social room. The round pedestal and long banquet forms most collected today trace back to the 18th and 19th centuries, when the dining room itself first came into fashion.

Styles to Know

Round and oval tables suit smaller or open-plan rooms, while rectangular pedestal and trestle tables remain the standard for larger, more formal spaces. A credenza adds extra serving storage nearby, and a vintage wall mirror overhead opens up the room. For layout ideas, browse 20 dining rooms arranged for entertaining.

How to Choose the Right Vintage Dining Table

A dining table is usually the largest piece in the room, which makes delivery details worth confirming: White Glove service, disassembly options, and the table's full length, leaves included, measured against the space you have. Every table comes from a vetted 1stDibs seller, with era, designer and condition detailed, backed by the 1stDibs Promise.

Round dining tables suit smaller or square rooms since they seat people efficiently and remove sharp corners, and pedestal bases free up legroom.
What is the best shape table for a small dining room?
1 Answer
1stDibs ExpertOctober 12, 2021
The best shape for a table in a small dining room can be a round table. A round table works well in small rooms and smaller square-shaped rooms. It creates a cozy setting, so it is the best shape for a small group of people. Visually, it seems to occupy less space than a rectangle because of the rounded corners, and this also means that it has less surface area. On 1stDibs, find a variety of antique and vintage round dining tables.
Is a round dining table better in a small space?
1 Answer
1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2023
Whether a round dining table is better in a small space is largely a matter of personal preference. Working with a tighter space may mean that a round or oval dining room table, a design that references the festive meals of the medieval era, may be a better fit. Round dining room tables, particularly those that originated in the Art Deco period, still endure as a popular contemporary substitute for traditional rectangular dining tables. Both round and oval tables take up less space than rectangular and square tables of similar size because they lack corners. Find a variety of round tables on 1stDibs.
