Pair of Tureens with Armorial Crests
By Chamberlains Worcester
Located in Katonah, NY
A pair of Chamberlain Worcester porcelain tureens with armorial crests.
What makes these tureens so beautiful is the lavish gold gilding on the finials, on the oak leaves around the finials, and on the gilded design of scrolling vines around the cover and the body of the tureens.
The crest as depicted upon this pair of George III/IV Chamberlain Worcester porcelain sauce tureens dates to circa 1820. The tureens display the crest of the family of Townshend showing a deer. In English heraldry, deer symbolize peace and harmony. They represent one who will not fight unless provoked.
The family crest of Townshend may be blazoned as follows:
Crest: A stag trippant proper
Given the livery colors of ‘argent and azure’ upon which the stag stands, a member of the Townshend family owned this pair of tureens...
