Chris Gwaltney Figurative Paintings
American, b. 1953
Balancing between abstraction and figurative, the works of Chris Gwaltney are evocative, luminous, and lush. He balances color with unexpected washes and scribbles; scraping physically from the surface as he generously slaps paint onto the canvas. Having studied Bay Area figurative painters - such as Richard Diebenkorn, Nathan Oliviera, and David Park - and influenced by the works of Joan Mitchell and Robert Motherwell, Gwaltney begins each work with a conversation in mind. He often starts with a vertical gesture, builds with foundations of layers, and allows the composition to reveal itself as he works. Gwaltney lives in Laguna Beach and holds a BA and MA from the University of California State Fullerton. He has exhibited throughout the US, including Peter Blake Gallery (Laguna Beach, CA), Seager Gray Gallery and Robert Green Fine Arts (Mill Valley, CA), Cadogan Contemporary (London, England), Anne Loucks Gallery (Glencoe, IL), Julie Nester (Park City, UT), and Tria Gallery (New York, NY). His work has garnered an international following and resides in numerous public and private collections.
“Because his abstractions in progress bristle with visual interest—including an icing of drips and tangles of wild line—as each work moves toward its conclusion, Gwaltney plays the role of an editor, eliminating anything that he feels stands in the way of expressive clarity. “I think that what great poets do is distill feeling,” he comments. “I want to do the same thing in painting and present the absolute essence of an emotional state.” Because of his rigorous quest for pure feeling, viewers of Gwaltney’s work should understand that the essence of his art is this: what is left is what is needed.” John Seed, Art Writerto

About Fred's life: by Hal Fry of the Herald
“Fred Does Whatever He Likes” was a title given to a biography
written about Fred Yost by Hal Fry of the Herald. The following is
taken directly from this column: “Fred Yost’s living style is like his
painting style. He has fun with it. Fred John Yost was born in
Switzerland, he’ sure, on November 6, 1889, he thinks.
His father John brought the family to his country when Fred was
about a year old—first to New York and later to
Canton, Sebring and finally Alliance, where Yost Sr.
loaded freight for a railroad. Fred like drawing and painting
so far back he can’t remember how or when it started—it was
always that way. But through the public schools in Alliance
he didn’t think of this as a career possibility. He wanted to be a
newspaperman. He worked his way through Mt. Union College,
finishing, he thinks, about 1912. Then he beat it for New York and
after kicking around for a time got a job as a proofreader for the
Wall Street Journal. He combined this and art school until
World War I took him into the Army. In infantry, field artillery and
ordnance duties he served with the 27th New York Division
through St. Mihiel and the Argonne and the rest—in the process
getting his hearing clobbered by blasts from his outfit’s own guns.
Coming out a Sergeant in 1919, he went back to the
Wall Street Journal briefly—then caught on as a staff artist for the
(New York) Herald. For several years, when he felt like it,
Yost would take a bus to the Mexican border and switch to a
Mexican bus to carry him way down south, then make it any way
he could to the places he wanted to see. On these trips he
virtually becomes a peon, disappearing totally from those who
know him—living with, like and clearly thoroughly liked by the
people among whom he moves.” Yost was a graduate of the
Art Students League and past president of the Ohio Watercolor
Society. Fred Yost, a man who eminently loved the Mexican
landscape,

Late 19th Century Tonalist Landscape -- Afternoon by the Pond
Located in Soquel, CA
Gorgeous tonalist oil painting woman walking in field by pond with home in background by Willis Seaver Adams (American, 1844-1921), circa 1880. Trees and an amazing sky in the background add depth and interest to this beautiful piece. Signed "W. S. Adams" lower right corner. Condition: Previous restoration includes relining of canvas. Frame is vintage gilt molded and wood frame and shows previous repair of molding losses. Image size: 20"H x 24"W.
Auctions records for the artist exceed $6,000.
Willis Seaver Adams was known for his landscapes of the Connecticut River Valley. A relative recluse for much of his artistic life, his loneliness can be seen in much of his works. Oil miniatures were the focus for almost all of his later works. He is credited with over 425 oils, watercolors, and drawings.
Willis Seaver was born in 1844 on a farm in Suffield, near the Connecticut River. He intermittently attended the Suffield Academy, and always wanted to be a painter. A wealthy doctor became his patron, and financed his studies in 1868 at the Royal Academy in Antwerp. When the doctor passed away, Adams returned home and struggled to make a living painting. After working for a photographer for three years, he opened his own studio.
Adams helped organize Cleveland's first watercolor exhibit in 1876. Soon thereafter, he completed a portrait of Rutherford B. Hayes, then governor of Ohio, prior to his becoming President of the United States. This portrait enhanced Adams notoriety.
In 1878, Adams traveled to Italy where he opened a studio in Venice, and became friendly with neighbor James Whistler. Prior to returning to Springfield, Adams lived in Florence, Italy for three years. He returned to became an instructor for the Springfield Art Association, and began to exhibit his works at the galleries of James D. Gill. His first one-man exhibit was held there in 1894. Other successful exhibitions took place in Chicago, New York, and Boston. Although his works garnered respectable prices and reflected his success, Adams felt he was due more recognition.
In 1906, he moved to Greenfield, Massachusetts and converted a barn into a studio. There, he fell into relative obscurity, accompanied mainly by his dog, Collie. In 1921, Adams passed away.
Examples of Willis Adams works can be seen at the Kent Memorial Library, the Wadsworth Atheneum, and the Suffield Academy. Several Suffield residents are thought to own Adams paintings.
