Lyubena Fox Figurative Paintings

Bulgarian, b. 1994

Hailed within the international art community as one of the 21st century’s most promising new artists, Lyubena Fox seeks to capture “the transitory beauty and emotions of life” in her intricately detailed still-life, figurative and nude paintings.

Born in 1994 in Sofia, Fox studied illustration at Bulgaria’s National Academy of Art, graduating in 2013. That same year, she moved to Florence, Italy, to study painting under John M. Angel at the Angel Academy of Art. After graduating in 2016, Fox continued her studies with artists Alessandro Dari and Roberto Ferri.

Fox cites the seasons as the underlying inspiration for her works, explaining they “symbolize the passing of time.” She says styles ranging from Baroque to romantic also inspire her, and she counts several artists as influences, including Ferri, American illustrator Teagan White and Polish Surrealist painter Jacek Yerka.

In many of her oil-on-canvas paintings, Fox uses a layering technique, taking advantage of the transparent and opaque qualities associated with oil paint to create a three-dimensional effect. She also displays a preternatural understanding of the relationship between light and shadows — this lends an ethereal feel to her paintings and is demonstrated in works such as the figurative Venus Cast, a still-life painting called Memento Mori and a nude piece called Forest Nymph.

Fox has already garnered critical acclaim and has won a range of awards for her work. In 2018, she won International Artist magazine’s Still Life Award, placed second in the BoldBrush painting competition in 2019, won the Best Artist Under 30 and Best Outdoor Still Life awards from the Plein Air Salon and was awarded the National Oil and Acrylic Painters’ Society (NOAPS) International Fall 2020 Merit Award.

Fox has exhibited her works at numerous art fairs and shows throughout Belgium, Italy, Spain and the United States. Her paintings have also been featured in several publications, including American Art Collector, Fine Art Connoisseur and Realism Today.

Challenging Conversations
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
"Challenging Conversation" by the talented artist Abdullateef Salaudeen is a compelling exploration of vulnerability, self-discovery, and the complexities of communication. The artwork features a young man in the act of pulling off his shirt, an action that transcends the physical realm and serves as a metaphor for the emotional layers being unveiled. Salaudeen's keen attention to detail is evident in the nuanced expression on the young man's face. The furrowed brow and intense gaze suggest a struggle, not only with the fabric of his shirt but also with internal conflicts and emotions. The artist masterfully captures the raw, unfiltered moments of personal challenge, inviting viewers to empathize with the subject's journey. The choice of title, "Challenging Conversation," adds depth to the narrative, suggesting that the act of removing the shirt symbolizes a dialogue within oneself—a confrontation with inner thoughts, doubts, or perhaps an attempt to shed societal expectations. The artist prompts viewers to contemplate the unseen narratives and untold stories that lie beneath the surface. Salaudeen's use of color and composition further enhances the emotional impact of the artwork. Subtle tones and careful shades of grey create a realistic yet painterly atmosphere, adding a layer of intimacy to the scene. The dynamic composition captures the transient nature of the moment, freezing the young man's struggle in time and inviting viewers to engage with the narrative at their own pace. "Challenging Conversation" resonates as a poignant exploration of the universal human experience, where moments of self-reflection and personal growth are often accompanied by internal dialogues that require courage and resilience. Abdullateef Salaudeen's work serves as a powerful reminder of the beauty found in vulnerability and the strength that emerges from confronting one's challenges. Fallen Angel - Figurative Painting Colors Dark Black Brown Grey Pale
By Lyubena Fox
Located in Sofia, BG
"Fallen Angel" (2018-20) Oil on canvas Framed: (in a handmade wooden and plaster frame, with gold leaf 67x59cm) Painting was started in 2018, most of it was finished by 2020, the last touches done in 2020. The Painting’s Qualities Lyubena Fox’s paintings are painted in several layers, using both the transparent and opaque qualities of oil paint. Each layer is applied after the previous has dried which makes the painting withstand time. It also creates a glowing, three-dimensional effect, which is due to the different layers showing though each other. These paintings are painted following the logic of how the eye perceives: seeing the details in the context of the form. To create a fulfilling experience, the images are composed of places, full of detail for the eye to explore and places where the eye can rest. “The impressions of Lyubena's paintings on the viewer is so mighty, mesmerizing, grand, that it paralyzes the imagination with its realistic perfection. Her paintings bring emotion of drama, mystery, love, desire and energy, represented by the vast creative power of her talent.” Bio Lyubena Fox was born in 1994 in Sofia, Bulgaria. 2013 she graduated from the National school of fine arts Bulgaria, specializing in illustration. The same year she moved to Florence, Italy to study painting with John M. Angel and in 2016 graduated from Angel Academy of Art Florence, after which she studied with Alessandro Dari...
