Gouache Watercolor Painting, Nantucket Harbor Boats American Deaf Modernist Art
By Robert Freiman
Located in Surfside, FL
Abstract harbor scene with boats, in bold, vivid colors on heavy mould made paper. Hand signed and dated, 1980 22 X 30 not frame Robert Freiman, deaf from birth, was born in March 1917 in New York City. He attended an oral program near his home and later transferred to the Lexington School for the Deaf when he was six. Early in his childhood, his love for drawing, painting and studying became apparent, and as an adult, he continued his studies in New York at the National Academy of Design, Pratt Institute, the Art Students League and the Parsons School of Design. In Paris, France he studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Bob Freiman was especially focused on painting portraits and figures in motion in various mediums, especially the mixed-media combination of watercolor, acrylic and pen. Among his subjects were acrobats, ballet dancers, cyclists and other athletes. He as well focused on abstracts for a time, discovering new media in his works with quick brushwork and expressive movements. In the latter part of his career, his style became abstract and surreal with images of metaphysical landscapes with architectural elements such as arches, towers, pyramids and castles floating in the air. The famed art critic Pierre Rouve wrote: “It is therefore refreshing to see them revitalized by the colourist wealth and virile handwriting of Robert Freiman, probably the best American water-colorist since John Marin. He worked in Provincetown and Nantucket and regularly exhibited there. He showed at Doll & Richards gallery of Boston alongside John Chetcuti, Lloyd Goodrich, Tod Lindenmuth, William Meyerowitz, Dwight Shepler, Elizabeth O'Neill Verner, Stanley Woodward, Andrew Wyeth, and others. His work bears the influence of the mid century school of Paris in particular Jean Carzou. He was a regular exhibitor at the Sidewalk Art...

In The Mournes at Annalong, County Down
By Maurice Canning Wilks
Located in Sutton Poyntz, Dorset
Available for sale from Big Sky Fine Art; this original oil painting by Maurice Canning Wilkes. The painting is presented and supplied in its’ original frame. Previously with F.G.Davis & Sons Ltd, North St. Arcade, Belfast. The painting is signed lower left. Maurice Canning Wilkes was a landscape and portrait painter, well known and much admired in Irish art circles. He was born in Belfast on 25th November 1910 and educated there at the Malone Public School. He began to study art at night classes at the Belfast School of Art, then won the Dunville Scholarship which enabled him to study full time. After College Wilkes resided in Cushenden, in the Glens of Antrim. He sketched and painted all over Ireland, but he especially liked the atmosphere and Donegal and the west of Ireland. Wilkes had early success showing his work at the Royal Hibernian Academy, where he later became an associate member. He also showed at the Victor Waddington Galleries in Dublin, and later at The Malone Gallery, Belfast, The Bell Gallery, Belfast and at the Oriel Gallery, Dublin. He also had works exhibited at the Royal Ulster Academy, of which he was a member. The Irish Times critic of the time discerned “a fine romantic spirit and considerable feeling” in his works. He also exhibited widely in North America and at the Royal Academy in London. In later years he maintained a summer studio at Sutton, County Dublin, where he painted many scenes of the area including Dublin Bay. Wilkes was a modest man, whose recipe for success was “hard work and regular hours” and he took no part in art politics. He died at his home in Belfast on 1st February 1984 and the Oriel Gallery, Dublin held a memorial retrospective of his work the same year. His works are in public collections throughout the world, including the Ulster Museum, Armagh County Museum, the Ulster Folk and Transportation Museum, the Office of Public Works in Dublin and the Limerick City Art Gallery. This original painting depicts a row of rural cottages in Annalong, a seaside village in County Down...
