Max Hayslette Interior Paintings

American, b. 1929

Max Hayslette was born in Rupert, West Virginia, in 1929. He is a 1951-batch graduate of the American Academy of Art, in Chicago and also, in the fall of that year, studied briefly with Egon Weiner and Alexander Archipenko, at the Art Institute of Chicago. Mr. Hayslette said this brief period changed the way he viewed Art and his own perception of how he would eventually fit into a life of design and painting. This is, when and where, he began to appreciate the modernist way of looking at life and painting. At the end of 1951, Mr. Hayslette was granted an internship with Kenneth Olson, one of the original Chicago Seven, composed of leading artists and designers. This was a period when remnants of the Bauhaus movement listed Chicago as its home. Hayslette remained on the Olson staff for 10 years. In early 1962, he relocated to Seattle, WA and was a principal at Berg, Hayslette, Dupar design firm. In 1973, Hayslette founded Olympus Graphics, Inc. and Olympus Atelier on Bainbridge Island, WA. He now lives and works on the Kitsap Peninsula, in Washington State. Mr. Hayslette lists Alexander Archipenko and Man Ray as two artists he greatly admires and from whom, he has learned much. The artist has studied great works of Asian masters in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Kyoto. He has traveled Europe, studying and painting, and often paints in southern France and northern Italy, as well as the Greek Islands and western Turkey. The artist has been greatly influenced by these travels. Mr. Hayslette is represented in over 350 private, corporate and public collections, most notably “the Max Hayslette Archives Collection” at West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV.

effrey Long, the elder son of a commercial graphic artist at Time & Life, was born in New York City in 1948. In 1970 Long received a BFA in Illustration and Art Education from Rhode Island School of Design and had decided to be a painter. His paintings from this period were photo realistic portraits and figures set in landscapes. On graduation, he married and began teaching art in a Rhode Island public school system. From 1971 through 1973 he was a resident artist at the Rockefeller-funded Pulpit Rock Community in Woodstock, Connecticut. Works from this intensive period were representational, highly dynamic, and borrowed from the vocabulary of cartoons. In early 1974 Long moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he obtained a full scholarship at California College of Arts & Crafts (now California College of Arts). There he received an MFA in painting in 1976. He established various studios in Oakland and Emeryville, while also working as a Curatorial Assistant at The Oakland Museum. The museum brought him in touch with such California artists as Richard Diebenkorn, Elmer Bischoff, Manuel Neri, Joan Brown, Jay de Feo...

Morning Light
By Maryann Lucas
Located in Sag Harbor, NY
“Morning Light” epitomizes the abundance of Spring with its bustling bouquet of white lilies, yellow roses, and a sliced open, ready to be eaten pink grapefruit. Despite the levity of the scene, Lucas has challenged herself with space, making a clear contrast between subject and background. She is consciously rejecting the “ironed on” effect of a subject onto a canvas, a trap to which lesser artists might succumb. Artist Bio Maryann Lucas lives and works in Sag Harbor. She is primarily self-taught but has also received instruction and support from wonderful and generous members of the East End artistic community. Working exclusively in oils, Lucas sets out almost daily to create plein aire landscapes and seascapes. In her studio, she works directly from life and captures the beauty of natural light as it transforms ordinary objects into visual delights. Lucas wants her work to celebrate all that is well with this world and brilliant in this life, despite its pockets of darkness. For me, she says, I know I am in the Presence of something beautiful, when it steals my breath, silences my mind, pushes out everything else and draws me in. I trust That. I use That to guide my hands as I arrange a still life or scan a landscape to determine where to set down my easel. Ultimately, That is what drives me to paint. Becoming evermore skilled as an oil painter is another of Lucas goals. To that end she remains teachable, finding it refreshing and vital for her own growth to paint with others. She has studied with favorite artists including Michael Klein...
