A Bronze Statuette of Arlequin by Charles-René de Paul de Saint-Marceaux. Cast by Barbedienne. The mischievous Harlequin, arms crossed in contemplation, wearing a grin and a mask, treading the boards of the stage, as befits his leading place in the Commedia dell'arte. Signed by the fondeur, Ferdinand Barbedienne, having the foundry cachet, and dated 1879, and the sculptor's name, St. Marceaux. French, Circa 1880. Paul de Saint-Marceaux (1845-1915) Son of a Reims wine merchant, entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris under the tutelage of Jouffroy, exhibiting at the Salon of 1868, studying later in Italy. Considerable success followed, and he was awarded gold medals at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1889, having been elected as a Chevalier to the Legion d'Honneur in 1880, and later becoming an officer. French empire pair of candle holders lamps. Exceptional pair of antique candleholders, created in Paris France during the imperial period of Napoleon III, circa 1870. They was designed with French empire neoclassical patterns, masterfully crafted with parts made up in gilt bronze ormolu and patinated bronze. Mounted in fluted columns pedestals carved from gray dotted Granite, with polished finish. Embellished with garlands and putties mounted in a four square and stepped bases. Weight: Combined of 12 Pounds (5.45 Kilos). Measurements: 15 Height by 4.50 Length by 5.15 Width Inches, (38 x 11.43 x 13.08 Cm). French Empire Louis Napoleon Bonaparte (1808-1873) was Emperor of France from 1852 to 1870 under the name of Napoleon III. In a way, the artistic codes of the Napoleon III style, also called Second Empire style, were presented at the Exhibition of 1844, during the reign of Louis-Philippe d'Orléans. The second Empire style, also known as the Napoleon III style, is a highly eclectic style of architecture and decorative arts, which uses elements of many different historical styles, and also made innovative use of modern materials, such as iron frameworks and glass skylights. It flourished during the reign of Emperor Napoleon III in France (1852–1870) and had an important influence on architecture and decoration in the rest of Europe and North America. Major examples of the style include the Opéra Garnier (1862–1871) in Paris by Charles Garnier, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the Church of Saint Augustine (1860–1871), and the Philadelphia City Hall (1871–1901). The architectural style was closely connected with Haussmann's renovation of Paris carried out during the Second Empire; the new buildings, such as the Opéra, were intended as the focal points of the new boulevards. An exceptional, fine and impressive, antique Victorian English sterling silver and rock crystal combination vinaigrette/thread spool holder in the form of a carriage lamp; an addition to our diverse collectible silverware collection. This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver combination vinaigrette / thread holder has been realistically modeled in the form of a carriage lamp. The body of the vessel is embellished with impressive chased scrolling leaf decoration, accented with plain silver borders. The anterior surface of the antique silver holder bears a feature bezel set cabochon cut rock crystal panel, displaying the initials MAUD; this protruding panel replicates the location of the lamp's light. The posterior of the vessel features an impressive hallmarked plain belt loop/hook fastening. The piece retains the original domed hinged cover ornamented with tiered panels embellished with further scrolling leaf decoration. The cover is surmounted with a plain ring loop attachment and opens to reveal the original thread spool. The underside of the lamp is fitted with a hallmarked hinged cover, which opens to reveal the vinaigrette with the original push fit grille and gilding. The grille is ornamented with an engraved and pierced decorated floral rosette design. The interior of the antique vinaigrette cover bears a Victorian lozenge mark which certifies the patent of the design on 8th September 1869 with the UK Patent Office.
