A rare and important pair of stoneware grotesque amphibious creature andirons by Robert Wallace Martin for Martin Brothers dating from the mid 1870’s. The heavily made andirons portray two grotesque amphibious creatures crouching on their hind limbs and bound back to back by a blue band. The creatures stand on a large rectangular stepped plinth base and are decorated in shades of ochre and blue, one slightly darker glazed than the other. Both have incised makers marks the edge of the plinth bases.
Provenance: Acquired directly from a private US Collection. For a similar pair, see Bonhams, Decorative Arts from 1960, 26th November 2013. Lot 3.

It is made of solid ceramic pottery and has a very unique green and beige, coloration and surface structure. the sculptural formed top element stands on a square formed base. the bottom is marked with typical Otto Meier Producer signature OM. a very collectible and very rare item of the Meier Collection. the object has a very sculptural form and in its size of 12,5x12,5cm, it is very impressive.

Hand built Ceramic Sculpture, in Gray/Green Underglaze. The Gray/Green is hard to capture: more dark gray than green, it has the feeling of the color sage green. The piece is a composite of hollow pods, elongated, pointed oval or elliptical shapes. They are individually hand-formed, attached together and fused during the firing. White stoneware clay with gray/green underglazes create a soft, powdery surface that still shows a bit of texture from the clay. It is not glazed. This original vintage studio object set was designed by Rudi Stahl and produced in his own Studio in the 1970s in Germany. It is made of pottery and has a very unique brown tone etc. coloration. The bottom is marked with typical Stahl Producer signature. A very collectible and very rare item of the Stahl Collection. The object has a very sculptural form and in its size of 12 and 21cm in height, it is very impressive.
Straightforward and minimalistic design of the 1970s design era. This item is a wonderful addition to every modern home.

Apprenticeship in pottery with Wim Mühlendyck (1936 journeyman's examination there), 1937 to 1939 studies at the State College for Ceramics in Höhr-Grenzhausen; from 1940 own workshop there; 1942 master craftsman examination; later he was chief master of the pottery guild of Rhineland-Palatinate. He received numerous awards, in 1975 Rudi Stahl (together with Wim Mühlendyck) was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon. Collaboration with, among others, Theodor Bogler.
