About the Item
This Totem has three stacking parts, a hollow brown rectangle, hollow white rectangle and a brown curved crescent crown on four small feet. The 3 parts are started as solid forms then hollowed out before stacking and attaching the feet. Beginning with a dark brown clay body, the brown pieces are covered with a dark brown slip which has some faint speckling. The white center rectangle has a dry underglaze painted onto the surface and reveals the dark clay body underneath, adding variation, texture and depth to the surface. Fired twice.
The Totemic form is a favorite of the Artist. Her long standing study of the form combines an interest in structure and modern design, abstract figure and profile. There is a searching here for meaning and identity for the individual within the communities of Totemic Families she often creates while investigating each particular idea. The pieces are strong enough to stand alone, but develop a different meaning when grouped with several others.
Signed with Artist's Signature Chop underneath.

Helena Starcevic Ceramics
Helena Starcevic Ceramics produces work that straddles the line between fine and decorative art. Each piece is one of a kind, hand-built entirely by the artist in her New York studio. Taking inspiration from the natural world, Ms. Starcevic's work includes references to the stark beauty of the desert, prehistoric cave paintings, and the human form (within and without). Everything is filtered through Ms. Starcevic’s own singular aesthetic, at once quiet yet strong, meditative, and beautiful. Pieces are made in different clays and finishes, and at different scales. Groupings are available. Helena Starcevic’s ceramic pieces are held in private collections across the US and Europe. She has held numerous residencies including one at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City.
Please contact me to discuss surface variations. These are one of a kind, they will always be different, no two will be identical.
