Brother Thomas Bezanson Signed Benedictine Monk Studio Pottery Glazed Art Vase

By Brother Thomas Bezanson

Located in Studio City, CA

A wonderfully glazed, beautifully crafted, and classically shaped vase/vessel by renowned Canadian master potter Brother Thomas Bezanson (1929-2007). Brother Thomas studied design at Nova Scotia College in the late 40s and early 50s, It was during this time that he discovered a love for the ceramic art form. In 1959 he became a monk and joined the Weston Priory, Vermont, a community of Benedictine men. Here he continued his art while also pursuing a degree in philosophy. In 1978 he traveled to Japan where he met and worked with five Japanese potters, designated “Living National Treasures” by the Japanese government. These particular artists and the time spent with them deeply influenced his work and his thought. In 1985, he became artist-in-residence at Mount Saint Benedict Monastery in Erie, Pennsylvania, where worked until his death in 2007. Brother Thomas was universally known and esteemed for his mastery of complex glazes and his adaptation and application of traditional Chinese and Japanese pottery methods and materials. The vase features a sumptuous green glaze that absolutely radiates in the light. The work is signed by Brother Thomas with his traditional signature and cipher. A special piece. Would be a great addition to any Brother Thomas or Mid-Century pottery/ceramics collection or make for an eye catching stand alone accent work in about any setting. His work can be found in numerous collections and international museums including: Aidekman Art Center, Tufts University, Medford, MA Allen Art Museum, Oberlin College, Oberlin, OH Art Complex Museum, Duxbury, MA Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL Bunting Institute, Radcliffe College, Cambridge, MA Canadian Museum of Civilization, Hull, Quebec, Canada Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, PA Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, VA Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution, New York, NY Davis Museum and Cultural Center, Wellesley College, Wellesley, MA Dimock Gallery, George Washington University, Washington, DC Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY Fleming Museum, University of Vermont, Burlington, VT Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA Framingham State University, Framingham, MA Hokkaido University, Hokkaido, Japan Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA Phoenix Art Museum, Phoenix, AZ Portland Museum of Art Portland, ME Pucker Gallery...

Large Japanese Blue and White Vase by Mazuku Kozan Meiji Period
Large Japanese Blue and White Vase by Mazuku Kozan Meiji Period

Large Japanese Blue and White Vase by Mazuku Kozan Meiji Period

By Makuzu Kozan

Located in Atlanta, GA

A striking blue and white vase from the studio of Japanese Potter Makuzu Kozan, also known as Miyagawa Kozan (1842–1916), one of the most established and collected ceramist from Meiji Period. Born as Miyagawa Toranosuke, Kozan established his pottery studio in Yokohama around 1870s and later became one of the appointed artist to the Japanese Imperial household. His work was exhibited in many international fairs that the Meiji government participated at the turn of the century and won many grand prizes. With a relative large size, this vase is decorated with underglaze cobalt blue using the novel technique developed by Kozan called Fuki-e (the blow painting), in order to achieve the striking dimensional misty winter landscape. The pine trees with upright trunks and down-sweeping branches appear receding into the depth of the mist, forming an visually unending forest. Known as one of the most creative ceramists, around 1880s, Kozan started experimenting with new chemical colors from the West in the format of his porcelain glaze. New colors allowed him to create underglaze design that appeared bright, smooth and glossy. He even invented his own receipt of cobalt blue to achieve a much brighter yet softer shade, as evident on this vase. To create landscape that is realistic and dimensional, more common in the western paintings, he was inspired by the native Japanese ink painting technique developed around 1900 by Yokoyama...

19th Century French Painted Ceramic Barbotine Jardinière with Floral Decor
19th Century French Painted Ceramic Barbotine Jardinière with Floral Decor

19th Century French Painted Ceramic Barbotine Jardinière with Floral Decor

Located in Dallas, TX

This elegant colorful hand painted Majolica planter was sculpted in Montigny sur Loing, France, circa 1860. The ceramic jardinière with root shape handles features high relief soft pink, blue and beige rose flowers with pale green leaves, and brown and grey background. The ceramic vase is in good condition commensurate with age and use (minor chips on few petals). Impressionist ceramics term generally applies to "paint the slip" or "batch gouache". At the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the towns of Montigny-sur-Loing and Marlotte are many artists living places like Jean-Baptiste Corot, Eugène Thirion (1839-1910), Adrien Schulz (1851-1931), Numa Gillet (1868-1940) and Lucien Cahen-Michel (1888-1980), all attracted by the quality of the landscape and the light. When Eugene Schopin founded in 1872 a ceramics factory, he worked with the painters to create a range of designs inspired by Impressionism and decorated according to new public demands. Several ceramic factories will develop around this Impressionist movement. The most famous, such as Georges Delvaux (1834-1909), Albert Boué (1862-1918) and Charles Alphonse Petit (1862-1927), will produce until 1922. Other manufacturers, such as Theodore Lefront...

19th Century Hand Painted Faience Jardiniere on Pedestal from Boulogne, France

19th Century Hand Painted Faience Jardiniere on Pedestal from Boulogne, France

Located in Dallas, TX

This fantastic faience jardiniere and pedestal were hand-painted in Boulogne, France (formally “Boulogne-sur-Mer”) in the late 1800’s. The vibrant set features heraldic displays set among foliate and floral illustrations. Both the pedestal and the jardiniere have white backgrounds festooned with green leaves and blue, yellow, orange, and purple flowers. The opening of the jardiniere has asymmetrical edges dotted by small piercings, with flowering vines painted along the inner rim. Exquisite handles, comprised of curled leaves and C-scrolls, are affixed to the sides of the lobed body. Numerous painted motifs grace the area between the handles, including drapery, scrolls, and floral baskets hanging from an arabesque border. Equally impressive décor can be seen on the tetrapartite stand with a molded top. Each layer of the molding has a different color scheme, ranging from yellow with volute embellishments to solid green. The neck of the stand has been adorned with floral displays above multi-colored scrolls, shells, and scalloped leaves. In the center of each scalloped leaf is a distinct heraldic shield: on one side is a French style shield representing the city of Boulogne, with a swan that symbolizes perfection. On the opposite side is coat of arms topped by a closed crown, emblazoned with a five-fold cross over three roundels, which is the coat of arms for Godfrey of Bouillon, the first ruler of Jerusalem, who was born in Boulogne. Beneath the coat of arms are a pair of scrolled feet adorned with scalloped leaves and scrolls. There are two more feet to the sides that have pierced elements with floral vines beneath. Our 19th century hand-painted faience jardiniere on pedestal...
