Pair of important Russian gilt bronze and metal vases Russian, circa 1820 Dimensions: Height 98cm, width 43cm, depth 38cm This monumental pair of vases are exquisitely crafted in gilt bronze and metal. They both feature twin scrolled handles, which are decorated with leaves and foliate patterns, as well as classical profiles at the top. The body of each vase is of ovoid form and features further ormolu mounts, including a thick band underneath the waisted neck, twin dog heads at the base of the handles, flowers, stars and more Classical masks with foliate scrolls. The vases are supported by square plinths, with socle form bases and decorations of fluted ribbing and scrolled foliate forms. Heavily inspired by the neoclassical style, which was popular in Russia in the late 18th and 19th centuries, the vases are decorated with gilt bronze relief scenes which allude to motifs in classical mythology. On a rich burgundy ground, the metal body of the vases show figures flanked by palm trees. One vase shows a woman dressed in a classical draped fabric garment playing two flutes and leaning on a pedestal with twirling ivy, while a baby stands...

Chinese Export Famille Verte Porcelain & French Ormolu Chinoiserie Centerpiece

By Edward Holmes Baldock

Located in Los Angeles, CA

A very fine and large 19th century Chinese export famille verte porcelain and French figural ormolu-mounted Chinoiserie style centerpiece jardinière, in the manner of Edward Holmes Baldock (1777-1845). The circular-ovoid porcelain bowl or cachepot, maybe 18th century Jiaqing period (unverified), decorated with a blue and purple ground background with parcel gilt depicting pagodas, trees, mountains and landscape scenes, flanking scrolled handles issuing from the base and ending with a finely chased ormolu pierced acanthus rim. The two ends with a projected mask of Chinese Imperial lions or foo dogs, surmounted and raised on six finely chased ormolu masks of Bacchus satyrs flanked by seashell-like mounts. The Ormolu, circa Paris, 1880. The Porcelain circa 1800 (Maybe 18th century.) Measures: Height: 15 3/4 inches (40 cm.) Overall width: 21 inches (53.4 cm.) Depth: 17 inches (43.2 cm.) Edward Holmes Baldock (1777-1845) was a prominent London furniture dealer to the Royal Family, father of Edward Holmes Baldock. He was first listed in the London trade directories in 1805. That listing had him operating out of No.7 Hanway Street in London, where he was described as selling "china and glass". An updated listing in 1821 described his business as "an antique furniture and ornamental furniture dealer", and in 1826 as a buyer and seller of "china, cabinets, screens, bronzes etc". Between 1832 and 1837 he sold earthenware and glass products to William IV, and upon the ascendancy of Queen Victoria in 1837, sold china until his death in 1845. Baldock was one of the first antique dealers and is similar to the 18th century marchands-merciers Dominique Daguerre and Simon-Philippe. He was the father of Edward Holmes Baldock (1812-1875), a British Conservative Party politician, and of Mary Frances Baldock, wife of the philatelist W. A. S. Westoby. 1876 Centennial Exhibition, J & L. Lobmeyr Ormolu Mounted Ruby Glass Centerpiece

By J. & L. Lobmeyr Company

Located in Long Island City, NY, NY

1876 Centennial Exhibition, J & L. Lobmeyr Exceptional Ormolu Mounted Bohemian Ruby Glass Centerpiece This exceptional Bohemian ruby red glass centerpiece, by he renowned Viennese glass manufacturer J. & L. Lobmeyr, exemplifies the firm's mastery in combining classical aesthetics with innovative design. Created circa 1876, this piece was showcased at the Centennial International Exhibition in Philadelphia, reflecting the era's fascination with classical motifs and superior craftsmanship. The centerpiece adopts a form inspired by admired Greek patterns, characterized by its elegant proportions and harmonious contours. The exquisite ormolu handles, reminiscent of Urbino vase designs, are artfully crafted as serpents with their heads pressed flat upon the rim in a vigilant posture, while their sinuous bodies attach gracefully to the bowl, culminating in finely detailed finials. This serpentine motif not only enhances the visual allure but also imbues the piece with symbolic significance, as snakes often represent protection and eternal life in classical iconography. Encircling the vessel is an expansive frieze featuring intricate scrollwork and figural representations. At the center of this decorative band stands a winged female figure, flanked by conventionally stylized lions, a composition that evokes themes of strength and guardianship prevalent in ancient art. The engraving is executed with extraordinary precision, with each leaf and tendril rendered in minute detail, showcasing the unparalleled skill of the artisans. The Centennial International Exhibition of 1876 in Philadelphia was a seminal event, marking the first World's Fair held in the United States. It celebrated the nation's centennial and served as a global stage for artistic and industrial achievements. J. & L. Lobmeyr's participation in this exhibition underscored their commitment to excellence and innovation in glassmaking. Pieces such as this centerpiece would have captivated audiences with their blend of historical inspiration and contemporary artistry, reflecting the 19th-century penchant for reviving classical forms through modern techniques. Founded in 1823 by Josef Lobmeyr, the company quickly established itself as a purveyor of fine glassware, earning the distinction of becoming the Imperial Court Supplier. Under the stewardship of Josef's sons, Josef and Ludwig, the firm expanded its artistic horizons, collaborating with eminent designers and embracing diverse stylistic influences, including Islamic and Persian motifs. Their innovative approach and dedication to quality garnered international acclaim, with their works featured in prestigious institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and most importantly The Corning Museum of Glass. This Bohemian ruby red glass centerpiece with ormolu...

Pair 19th Century Japanese Imari Porcelain & Gilt-Bronze Torchere Candelabra
Pair 19th Century Japanese Imari Porcelain & Gilt-Bronze Torchere Candelabra

Pair 19th Century Japanese Imari Porcelain & Gilt-Bronze Torchere Candelabra

By Imari Porcelain

Located in Los Angeles, CA

A fine Pair of 19th century Japanese Imari Porcelain and French Gilt-Bronze Mounted Thirteen-Light Celadon Torchere Candelabra. The bottle-shaped Japonisme vases with a Royal red background, decorated with parcel-gilt and black soaring eagles in the hunt within a forestall scene. Each Vase fitted and surmounted with a French 19th century Louis XV Style 13-Light scrolled candelabrum and all raised on a circular pierced gilt-bronze plinth. circa: 1880. Imari Porcelain (????) is the name for Japanese porcelain wares made in the town of Arita, in the former Hizen Province, northwestern Kyushu. They were exported to Europe extensively from the port of Imari, Saga, between the second half of the 17th century and the first half of the 18th century. The Japanese as well as Europeans called them Imari. In Japanese, these porcelains are also known as Arita-yaki (???). Imari or Arita porcelain has been continously produced up through the present day. Characteristics Though there are many types of Imari, Westerners' conception of Imari in the popular sense is associated only with a type of Imari produced and exported in large quantity in mid-17th century. This type is called Kinrande. Kinrande Imari is colored porcelain with cobalt blue underglaze and red and gold overglaze. The color combination was not seen in China at that time. Traditional Ming dynasty color porcelain used dominantly red and green, probably due to scarcity of gold in China, whereas gold was abundant in Japan in those days. The subject matter of Imari is diverse, ranging from foliage and flowers to people, scenery and abstractions. Some Imari design structures such as kraak style were adopted from China, but most designs were uniquely Japanese owing to the rich Japanese tradition of paintings and costume design. The porcelain has a gritty texture on the bases, where it is not covered by glaze. There is also blue and white Imari. Kakiemon style Imari is another type of Imari, but it tends to be categorized separately in Europe. History "Imari" was simply the trans-shipment port for Arita wares. It was the kilns at Arita which formed the heart of the Japanese porcelain industry. Arita's kilns were set up in the 17th century, when kaolin was discovered in 1616 by the immigrant Korean potter, Yi Sam-pyeong (1579–1655). (He may also be known by the name, "Kanage Sambei".) Yi Sam-Pyeong, along with his extended family of 180 persons, left Korea on the offer of a privileged position in Japan. This decision was made after the occurrence of certain Japanese invasions of Korea. After Yi Sam-Pyeong's discovery, his kilns began to produce revised Korean-style blue and white porcelains, known as "Shoki-Imari". In the mid-17th century there were also a lot of Chinese refugees in Northern Kyushu due to the turmoil on Chinese continent, and it is said one of them brought coloring technique to Arita. Thus Shoki-Imari developed into Ko-KutaniImari. Ko-Kutani was produced around 1650 for both export and domestic market. Blue and white porcelain continued to be produced and they are called Ai-Kutani. Ko-Kutani Imari for the export market usually adopted Chinese design structure such as kraak style, whereas Ai-Kutani for the domestic market were highly unique in design and are accordingly valued very much among collectors. Ko-Kutani style evolved into Kakiemon style Imari, which was produced for about 50 years around 1700. Imari achieved its technical and aesthetic peak in Kakiemon style, and it dominated European market. Blue and white Kakiemon is called Ai-Kakiemon. Kakiemon style transformed into Kinrande in the 18th century. Kinrande used blue underglaze and red and gold overglaze, and later some other colors. Imari began to be exported to Europe because the Chinese kilns at Ching-te-Chen were damaged in the political chaos and the new Qing dynasty government stopped trade in 1656–1684. Exports to Europe were made through the Dutch East India Company, but the designation "Imari Porcelain" in Europe connotes Arita wares of mostly Kinrande Imari. Export of Imari to Europe stopped in mid-18th century when China began export to Europe again, since Imari was not able to compete against China due to high labor cost.
