Unusual vintage majolica vase with complex glaze in dark Bordeau oxblood red and various shades of grey colors features bands of applied reliefs in shape of abstract, graphic flowers. Top and bottom parts of the vase and bands of relief decor are decorated with gold. Monochromatic white glaze was used on inner surfaces, accentuating the palest grey shades in the main glaze. The vase is signed on the bottom with model number and "Italy"; while it does not have the usual the manufacturer's mark, "FF", the glaze that was used for this series is well documented to Fratelli Fanciullacci. It was common for Italian ceramics manufacturers to omit marking their pieces with their logos if the they were intended for American or European distributors; instead, they would only mark it "Italy" to allow the distributor to use their stickers, or rarely, they would mark the piece with "studio tame" for "distributor name" if the distributor did not object. Pieces from this particular series were made by Fratelli Fanciullacci with their own mark, for Ebeling Reuss...

A truly monumental c1990 stoneware boulder-form vase by master potter Karen Karnes. What makes this unique pot stand out is its sheer size and stunning violet glaze. Later in life Karnes returned to the more biomorphic forms she explored earlier in her career in the late 1940s-early 1950s of which this is an exceptional example. Bio. from wikipedia. Karen Karnes (November 17, 1925 – July 12, 2016) was an American ceramist, best known for her salt glazed, earth-toned stoneware ceramics. Early life Karnes was born on November 17, 1925 in New York City,[2] where she attended art schools for children. Her garment worker parents were Russian and Polish Jewish immigrants, and the family lived in the Bronx Coops. Karnes applied for and was accepted to the High School of Music & Art. As a child she was surrounded by urban realities and visual influences, but she claims that her parents' old-world ideals kept her grounded. At Brooklyn College she majored in design and graduated in 1946. After graduating, she studied abroad in Italy, where she continued to study ceramics. After returning from Italy, Karnes began a graduate program at Alfred University, but left before completing her degree to work at Black Mountain College. Black Mountain College Karnes first encountered Black Mountain College in 1947, where she took a summer design class with Josef Albers. In 1952, she and her husband David Weinrib (whom she later divorced) moved down to North Carolina to become potters-in-residence at the Black Mountain College. While at Black Mountain College, Karnes and Weinrib became acquainted with Merce Cunningham and John Cage, and later lived with them at the Gate Hill Community. Vintage ceramic or pottery vase features traditional rounded body with wide shoulder and elongated neck with flared rim. The vase is decorated with hand-applied brass relief with fish scale texture, framing the central traditional Tonala Folk Art style hand-painted decor. Depicting 3 conjoined maidens cradling their faces with their dresses flowing into a wide trefoil undulating base. Marked to the base. (Perhaps a depiction of the goddess Hecate.) There is evidence of an old professional repairs. We note overpaint to sections of the figures and base. Not noted on the underside. (We're not sure what the extent of the repairs were. Given the lack of evidence of repair on the underside, we think it may have been chips or flakes to the top.) In any case, it displays very nicely. Simply wonderful French Art Nouveau design! Date: ca. 1900 Overall Condition: It is in overall fair, as-pictured, used estate condition with no chips or cracks. Condition Details: There is evidence of an old professional repairs. We note overpaint to sections of the figures and base. Not noted on the underside. (We're not sure what the extent of the repairs were. Given the lack of evidence of repair on the underside, we think it may have been chips or flakes to the top.)
