BRAZILIAN FURNITURE

More often than not, vintage mid-century Brazilian furniture designs, with their gleaming wood, soft leathers and inviting shapes, share a sensuous, unique quality that distinguishes them from the more rectilinear output of American and Scandinavian makers of the same era.

Commencing in the 1940s and '50s, a group of architects and designers transformed the local cultural landscape in Brazil, merging the modernist vernacular popular in Europe and the United States with the South American country's traditional techniques and indigenous materials.

Key mid-century influencers on Brazilian furniture design include natives Oscar NiemeyerSergio Rodrigues and José Zanine Caldas as well as such European immigrants as Joaquim TenreiroJean Gillon and Jorge Zalszupin. These creators frequently collaborated; for instance, Niemeyer, an internationally acclaimed architect, commissioned many of them to furnish his residential and institutional buildings.

The popularity of Brazilian modern furniture has made household names of these designers and other greats. Their particular brand of modernism is characterized by an émigré point of view (some were Lithuanian, German, Polish, Ukrainian, Portuguese, and Italian), a preference for highly figured indigenous Brazilian woods, a reverence for nature as an inspiration and an atelier or small-production mentality.

Hallmarks of Brazilian mid-century design include smooth, sculptural forms and the use of native woods like rosewoodjacaranda and pequi. The work of designers today exhibits many of the same qualities, though with a marked interest in exploring new materials (witness the Campana Brothers' stuffed-animal chairs) and an emphasis on looking inward rather than to other countries for inspiration.

Percival Lafer “MP-41” Sofa for Lafer MP, 1972

By Percival Lafer

Located in Lonigo, Veneto

Percival Lafer “MP-41” Sofa for Lafer MP, wood and cognac leather, Brazil, 1972 The “MP-41” sofa by Percival Lafer embraces fluidity with a structure that appears weightless despite its solid wood frame. The absence of visible crossbars beneath the seat enhances this effect, allowing the thick, tufted cushions to seemingly float. The upholstery drapes over the structure like silk fabric on a sculpted form, a harmonious integration of material and frame. The butterfly-shaped joints refine the frame’s construction, tapering toward the center for a softened profile. The lateral tufting on the seat is not merely decorative—it creates a structured geometry that follows the contours of the body. The armrests, backrest, and seat merge into a single, uninterrupted form, maximizing ergonomic support. Leather straps secure the cushions to the frame, a signature Lafer detail that blends artisanal technique with industrial efficiency. The MP-41 prioritizes organic curves over strict geometric lines. The deep cognac leather, aged to a rich patina, enhances the warmth of the wood. The absence of ornamentation shifts focus to the raw materials, celebrating their natural textures and variations. Unlike Jean Gillon...

Mid-Century Modern Rio Chaise by Oscar Niemeyer, 1978
Mid-Century Modern Rio Chaise by Oscar Niemeyer, 1978

Mid-Century Modern Rio Chaise by Oscar Niemeyer, 1978

By Oscar Niemeyer, Anna Maria Niemeyer

Located in New York, NY

Designed by Oscar Niemeyer and Anna Maria Niemeyer in 1978 and produced by Tepperman, the Rio chaise longue is constructed from lacquered molded plywood with a cane seating surface and a leather cylindrical neck cushion suspended by leather straps. The form follows a continuous sinuous curve, which functions simultaneously as structure and base. The cane panel is set within the black-lacquered plywood frame, and the leather cushion is secured at the headrest end by looped straps. Oscar Niemeyer, the Brazilian architect whose practice defined the formal vocabulary of Brazilian modernism, collaborated on furniture design with his daughter Anna Maria Niemeyer. His architectural output, most extensively realized in the construction of Brasília from the late 1950s onward, was characterized by curved concrete forms, a quality that translated directly into the Rio chaise.Anna Maria Niemeyer contributed substantially to the furniture designs attributed to their collaboration during this period.
