ART DECO STYLE

Art Deco furniture is characterized by its celebration of modern life. More than its emphasis on natural wood grains and focus on traditional craftsmanship, vintage Art Deco dining chairs, tables, desks, cabinets and other furniture — which typically refers to pieces produced during the 1920s and 1930s — is an ode to the glamour of the “Roaring Twenties.”

ORIGINS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

CHARACTERISTICS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

  • Bold geometric lines and forms, floral motifs
  • Use of expensive materials such as shagreen or marble as well as exotic woods such as mahogany, ebony and zebra wood
  • Metal accents, shimmering mirrored finishes
  • Embellishments made from exotic animal hides, inlays of mother-of-pearl or ivory

ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGNERS TO KNOW

VINTAGE ART DECO FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

Few design styles are as universally recognized and appreciated as Art Deco. The term alone conjures visions of the Roaring Twenties, Machine Age metropolises, vast ocean liners, sleek typography and Prohibition-era hedonism. The iconic movement made an indelible mark on all fields of design throughout the 1920s and ’30s, celebrating society’s growing industrialization with refined elegance and stunning craftsmanship.

Widely known designers associated with the Art Deco style include Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Eileen Gray, Maurice Dufrêne, Paul Follot and Jules Leleu.

The term Art Deco derives from the name of a large decorative arts exhibition held in Paris in 1925. “Art Deco design” is often used broadly, to describe the work of creators in associated or ancillary styles. This is particularly true of American Art Deco, which is also called Streamline Moderne or Machine Age design. (Streamline Moderne, sometimes known as Art Moderne, was a phenomenon largely of the 1930s, post–Art Nouveau.)

Art Deco textile designers employed dazzling floral motifs and vivid colors, and while Art Deco furniture makers respected the dark woods and modern metals with which they worked, they frequently incorporated decorative embellishments such as exotic animal hides as well as veneers in their seating, case pieces, living room sets and bedroom furniture.

From mother-of-pearl inlaid vitrines to chrome aviator chairs, bold and inventive works in the Art Deco style include chaise longues (also known as chaise lounges) and curved armchairs. Today, the style is still favored by interior designers looking to infuse a home with an air of luxury and sophistication.

The vintage Art Deco furniture for sale on 1stDibs includes dressers, coffee tables, decorative objects and more.

Jean-Charles Guéro Art Deco Terracotta Bust, Young Lady, France, 1920s
Jean-Charles Guéro Art Deco Terracotta Bust, Young Lady, France, 1920s

Jean-Charles Guéro Art Deco Terracotta Bust, Young Lady, France, 1920s

Located in Saint-Amans-des-Cots, FR

A refined example of French Art Deco sculpture, this elegant terracotta bust by Jean-Charles Guéro was created in France during the 1920s. Depicting a graceful young woman with beautifully stylized features, the sculpture embodies the timeless elegance, balance, and modern refinement that define the finest French decorative arts of the Art Deco era. Signed "Guéro" on the reverse, it is an authentic work that will appeal to collectors seeking rare and original French sculptures. Expertly modeled in terracotta, the bust reveals the artist’s sensitivity to form through its flowing lines, delicate facial expression, and harmonious proportions. The warm natural color and finely textured surface enhance its sculptural presence, making it equally suitable for a sophisticated interior or an important Art Deco collection. Measuring 14.4 inches high (36.5 cm), 12.2 inches wide (31 cm), and 7.1 inches deep (18 cm), this sculpture offers an ideal display size for a console, pedestal, library, or mantel. It remains in excellent vintage condition, preserving the crisp modeling and elegant character intended by the sculptor. Jean-Charles Guéro is appreciated for blending classical inspiration with the clean, geometric aesthetic of the 1920s, producing works distinguished by their quiet sophistication and enduring appeal. This bust reflects the artistic transition toward modernity that made French Art Deco internationally influential. An exceptional acquisition for collectors of French Art Deco sculpture, 1920s terracotta...

French Art Deco Table Lamp, Wrought Iron & Alabaster, 1920s
French Art Deco Table Lamp, Wrought Iron & Alabaster, 1920s

French Art Deco Table Lamp, Wrought Iron & Alabaster, 1920s

Located in Saint-Amans-des-Cots, FR

Elegant French Art Deco table lamp, made circa 1925 and combining a sculptural wrought-iron base with a refined alabaster shade. The design is built around a sophisticated contrast of materials. The dark, graphic wrought iron gives the lamp structure and visual strength, while the natural alabaster softly diffuses the light and brings warmth to the composition. This combination is highly characteristic of French decorative lighting from the 1920s, when metalwork and translucent stone were frequently paired to create both functional and highly decorative objects. Its compact proportions make the lamp especially versatile. It works beautifully on a console, side table, nightstand, desk, or small cabinet, while its balanced silhouette allows it to remain decorative even when not illuminated. The alabaster shade displays the subtle natural veining and tonal variations inherent to the stone, which become particularly attractive when the lamp is lit. The wrought-iron base adds a more architectural quality and reinforces the handcrafted character of the piece. Preserved in excellent condition, this lamp is a fine example of 1920s French Art Deco lighting, combining period craftsmanship, decorative restraint, and practical usability. A strong addition to a collection of French Art Deco lighting, antique alabaster lamps...
