BRAZILIAN FURNITURE

More often than not, vintage mid-century Brazilian furniture designs, with their gleaming wood, soft leathers and inviting shapes, share a sensuous, unique quality that distinguishes them from the more rectilinear output of American and Scandinavian makers of the same era.

Commencing in the 1940s and '50s, a group of architects and designers transformed the local cultural landscape in Brazil, merging the modernist vernacular popular in Europe and the United States with the South American country's traditional techniques and indigenous materials.

Key mid-century influencers on Brazilian furniture design include natives Oscar NiemeyerSergio Rodrigues and José Zanine Caldas as well as such European immigrants as Joaquim TenreiroJean Gillon and Jorge Zalszupin. These creators frequently collaborated; for instance, Niemeyer, an internationally acclaimed architect, commissioned many of them to furnish his residential and institutional buildings.

The popularity of Brazilian modern furniture has made household names of these designers and other greats. Their particular brand of modernism is characterized by an émigré point of view (some were Lithuanian, German, Polish, Ukrainian, Portuguese, and Italian), a preference for highly figured indigenous Brazilian woods, a reverence for nature as an inspiration and an atelier or small-production mentality.

Hallmarks of Brazilian mid-century design include smooth, sculptural forms and the use of native woods like rosewoodjacaranda and pequi. The work of designers today exhibits many of the same qualities, though with a marked interest in exploring new materials (witness the Campana Brothers' stuffed-animal chairs) and an emphasis on looking inward rather than to other countries for inspiration.

Organic Live-Edge Cross-Cut Slab Coffee Table Crafted from Salvaged Ipé trees.

Organic Live-Edge Cross-Cut Slab Coffee Table Crafted from Salvaged Ipé trees.

Located in San Antonio, TX

This sculptural coffee table is handcrafted from a single, massive slab of solid Ipe wood, celebrated for its incredible density and deep, chocolate-red hue. The organic, freeform silhouette preserves the raw edges and contours of the original tree, emphasizing its natural character and irregular beauty. The surface—meticulously sanded and hand-finished—reveals swirling grain patterns, subtle tonal variations, and textural imperfections that tell the story of its origin. Supported by three hand-carved, faceted legs, the table merges rugged authenticity with refined artistry. Each angle reveals a new facet of its sculptural form, making it both furniture and functional art. Perfect as a commanding centerpiece in a modern living space or an earthy gallery setting, this Ipe table...

Percival Lafer Folding Rosewood Coffee Table, 1970s

Percival Lafer Folding Rosewood Coffee Table, 1970s

By Percival Lafer

Located in Culver City, CA

This coffee table is fabulous! Designed by Percival Lafer a Brazilian furniture designer known for his innovative and modern designs. One of his most iconic creations is the Percival Lafer folding table, which was first introduced in the 1970s. Coming in a number of sizes, this is the large coffee table. The Percival Lafer folding tables are versatile functional pieces of furniture that can be used in a variety of settings. It is designed to be lightweight and easy to move, with a simple folding mechanism that allows it to be set up or stored away quickly and easily. The table features a sleek and minimalist design, with a rosewood parquette type design that featured different pieces of rosewood arranged at different heights, creating an uneven, heavily textured, almost brutalist look-- topped with glass. This eye catching design is one of his most iconic designs. A wonderful piece that can be easily folded and stored away if necessary. This table would look incredible in any mid century modern, Brazilian modern, or contemporary home. Place both tables together to have a larger functional coffee table. We currently have this table in the gallery alongside a Sergio Rodrigues sofa as well as a Jorge Zalszupin mesa...
