PIETER GERARDUS VAN OS Dutch, 1776-1839 Shepherd with Flock in a Pastoral Landscape (1821) Oil on canvas Signed lower left "PG Van Os f 1821" Item # 204GPP23A An extensive and brilliantly detailed scene, this fine woodland pastoral landscape highlights the ability of Pieter Gerardus van Os to manipulate light for dramatic and somewhat ecclesiastical effect. There is a certain other-worldly insinuation in the golden light as it pierces the dense cover of the leaves to highlight the shepherd and his flock as the focal point for the painting. Here we find the young boy entirely at peace on the bank surrounded by long golden grasses with his hat and staff tossed aside while watching the action of the small waterfall on the otherwise tranquil stream. His small dog stands beside him while the sheep graze carelessly, each showing total disregard for the two men and their dog hunting in shadows of the woods behind them. Across the bank a pair of unattended billy goats graze on the trees of the deeply shaded forest floor. There is a harmony and perfect sense of balance in this intricately detailed scene, an effective infusion of the transcendental into a quiet landscape scene. The work is signed lower left in his typical scrawling script "PG [intertwined] Van Os f 1821" and the back of the frame retains an early Christie's label. It is presented in a very fine carved giltwood frame. PIETER GERARDUS VAN OS Born in The Hague on October 8th of 1776 into the renowned Van Os family of painters, Pieter would spend his early years studying under his father Jan together with his brother Georgius Johannes Jacobus (Dutch, 1782-1861) in their father's studio. The three men had remarkable careers and would become some of the most influential painters in the Netherlands throughout the first half of the 19th century. Unlike his brother and father, Pieter moved away from still-life paintings and focused his work on rural landscapes of the Dutch countryside. He was self-taught in this pursuit, first as a copyist of the renowned Dutch "Golden Age" painters Karel Dujardin (Dutch, 1626-1678) and Paulus Potter (Dutch, 1625-1654) while also being heavily influenced by the landscape work of Jacob van Ruisdael and the allegorical landscapes of Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem. Guido Borgianni was born in New York on June 11, 1915, to Florentine Roberto Borgianni, a leather merchant, and Sara Herreshoff, who belonged to one of the wealthiest families in the United States and became a legend in the construction of the racing boats that also participated in and won the America's Cup. Guido was not even a year old when, once his parents' marriage had foundered, his father brought him back to Florence. Of Guido Borgianni's extraordinary gifts as a draftsman and painter, Galileo Chini, his neighbor, noticed, and he worked to see that talent refined. Thus Borgianni attended the Academy of Fine Arts under Felice Carena, a strict teacher but one who knew how to appreciate the qualities of his pupils. In the first part of his life he signed his works in black. Then, when he became a pointillist, he began to use red. Among his great admirers were Alessandro Parronchi and Oskar Kokoschka, who was captivated by Borgianni's paintings during his Florentine stay in 1949. Soffici, Saetti, Malaparte, Montale, Pratolini, and Cesare Zavattini, the screenwriter of Vittorio De Sica and Italian neorealism, all liked him very much, finding him "as beautiful as a Corot." In 1946 he exhibited at the Quadriennale in Rome. After his marriage to Simonetta Avila in 1954, his activities were enlivened by travel: in 1955 to Venice, in 1957 to Paris, from 1958 to 1962 around Italy, in 1964 to Spain, in 1971 to New York and Barbados Islands. In 1950 he was awarded a prize at the Mostra Nazionale del Fiorino in Florence, and in 1956 he was appointed Academician of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence. This beautiful executed painting depicts a historical scene of an old man and a young woman who are huddled over a bible. The pair is gazing in apparent concern or alarm, over the old man's shoulder, towards something outside of the picture. The scene is likely set in the 16th or 17th century when Protestants were prosecuted, amongst others, for reading the bible in the vernacular, a practice prohibited by the Catholic Church at the time. Signed (l/r) A. Ribas 15-12-913. Within a giltwood carved frame. circa: Probably Belgium, 1913. Karel Ooms was born in Dessel on January 27, 1845 as the youngest son of a large peasant family. At school his extraordinary talent for drawing was discovered. When he was twelve his hometown provided financial support which allowed him to study at the Antwerp Academy of fine Arts. One of his teachers at the Academy was Nicaise de Keyser, one of the key figures in the Belgian Romantic-historical school of painting and a painter of mainly history paintings and portraits. After graduating from the Academy 1865 Karel Ooms was welcomed with pomp in his home town Dessel. He painted two altarpieces for the local church Saint Nicolas, to express his gratitude to his city. Karel Ooms settled as an independent artist in Antwerp around 1871. He quickly established a reputation as a portrait painter. Hampe '81" Item # 106QJY03C An incredibly powerful Romantic landscape of the Alpine mountains with a waterfall cascading into a valley, the river pouring over the rocks and curving around the bend, flowing past a pair of figures seated on a grassy noll with a transcendant unearthly lighting that creates a focal point of the couple. It is as if the clouds have opened up just to shine light on them, emphasizing the glorious day the man and woman are experiencing on this leisurely hike through nature. Painted by Guido Hampe in 1881, the painting was acquired by Charles S. Shultz, president of the Hoboken Bank in Montclair, New Jersey where it remained in his home until its deaccession from the home in 2021. The home was particularly interesting for its total originality, the interior looking almost identical throughout its entire life to how it appeared at its inception in 1896. Enclosed in the collection of images is a shot of the painting in situ over the living room fireplace as captured by the Montclair Magazine article on the home in 2020. The work is signed in his typical script lower right "G. Hampe / 81". It remains housed in the original and substantial giltwood frame, fully restored and a very powerful presentation. Surface bright and vibrant. Retains the original frame that we have had professionally restored with trace regilding and inpainting, some elements recreated; the restoration has preserved the antique nature of the frame and all restoration has been toned to match the aged aesthetic of the frame. Painting was acquired with its apparently first surface, an incredibly thick grime layer that significantly obscured the image - this was likely due to its placement above the fireplace in the Charles Shultz...
