"White Hydrangeas" small scale oil painting of white flowers in clear vase

By Anne Harney

Located in Edgartown, MA

“Spending a lifetime of summers on Martha's Vineyard my work has evolved into natural forms of coastal scenes. My connection to the island developed a deep concern with natural forms life-plants, shells, hills, trees, stones and water. My paintings create a path of self-discovery. Reassembling pieces together from memory and imagination using textures, patterns and transparent layers make the viewer question how far reality can be pushed before it will yield the powerful essence of what is seen.” Anne Harney is a Boston-based painter who received her BFA with Honors in painting from Mass College of Art and Design in 2011. Awards include George Nick...

La Prima Pietra-Ancient Architectural Arched Doorways Leading to Lush Landscape

By Carol Pylant

Located in Chicago, IL

Meticulously rendered stone archways lead to a stone path meandering into a lush landscape in Carol Pylant's stunning architectural painting entitled "La Prima Pietra". The pristine space suggest inner solitude and peace. This calm continues through the archway and into the rich green landscape beyond the walls. The artist often combines imagery from her travels to Italy, Spain and throughout Europe with memories of elsewhere. The artwork is framed in a heavy black wooden frame with a silver inset adding to the richness of the piece. It measures 36.5 x 42.5 inches framed. Carol S. Pylant La Prima Pietra oil on panel 30h x 36w in 76.20h x 91.44w cm CSP037 Resume Artist / Emeritus Professor, University of Wisconsin-Madison Education 1979 M.F.A. By John Hrehov

Located in Chicago, IL

The artist is a master at storytelling. He sets the stage for the viewer to bring the events to a particular scene. Here, the artist has set two wine glasses, napkins and a small plate of desserts on a geometrically patterned table cloth, draping so it almost appears to be falling over the frame. The viewer is required to ask the questions about the scene but the answers may only lie in their own imagination. The painting, which is painted on canvas then mounted to a panel, is framed in a simple wooden frame measuring 21 x 30 inches. Ernest Crofts British, (1847-1911) On Guard Oil on panel, signed & dated (18)79 Image size: 9.25 inches x 6.75 inches Size including frame: 19.5 inches x 17 inches A wonderful historical painting of a roundhead soldier standing outside a fortress by Ernest Crofts. The soldier is depicted wearing a back and breast plate over a red and yellow sleeved jacket tied with a sash around his waist. On his head, he wears a felt hat with red and white feathers and holds a sword in his hand. He is shown standing at the moated entrance of a fortified stone building with a portcullis. Beyond the raised portcullis, a group of soldiers can be seen in the shadows. The soldier’s uniform is typical of Cromwell’s famous ‘Ironside’ cavalry and indicates he is an officer, who, in Cromwell’s time would have earned his place based on merit rather than social status. Dimensions with frame: 51 x 59 x 6 cm. Signed in the lower left corner. An atmospheric Impressionist landscape depicting the hay harvest in the countryside. Rendered with expressive brushwork and a luminous palette of golden yellows, soft greens, and muted blue-greys, the composition captures a tranquil summer day during the fenaison (haymaking season). Rolling fields, cypress trees, and distant mountains create depth and serenity across the scene. The artist employs loose, painterly strokes and subtle tonal harmonies characteristic of early to mid-20th century landscape painting. The warm light and rural subject matter evoke the timeless charm of French Provence and the Mediterranean countryside, reflecting the enduring influence of French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. SUNDOG 10 is an acrylic on panel painting belonging to a series inspired by the meteorological phenomenon of Sundogs (parhelia), occurrences of bright spots straddling the Sun in a 22° halo. The painting consists of triangular and quadrilateral forms in a red hue palette. Just like in other Sundog paintings, the color scheme is directly inspired by nature, with red tints referring to the element of fire and autumn leaves. Return of the Goddess - Original Painting of Surreal, Symbolic Goddess Figure
Return of the Goddess - Original Painting of Surreal, Symbolic Goddess Figure

Return of the Goddess - Original Painting of Surreal, Symbolic Goddess Figure

By Oliver Hazard Benson

Located in Chicago, IL

As is generally the case with my paintings, this work proceeded from a place of unknowing. The specificity of imagery and technique belie the non-specific character of the ideas and narratives presented. The imagery is not tied to any pre-existent source (textual or other). It is not preconceived by the artist, rather it is produced spontaneously in the process of painting. That said, it seems both easy and sensible to connect the imagery in this painting to common cultural material, especially that from very ancient sources. The central figure is very much like a totemic Neolithic goddess- the sort of which seem to be among the most ancient artistic works, examples are extant from eras stretching back tens of thousands of years. A lot has been written about figures of that kind but of course no one can reasonably claim to truly understand them. Here the great goddess appears with wings and entwined serpents. Crowned also with a glowing orb she has become an emblem of a matristic hermetica. The smaller figure may be less evidently archetypical. She is a younger goddess, a daughter like Persephone to Demeter. She lifts the breasts of her mother signifying perhaps how the presence of the child evokes the nurturing qualities of the mother or how Persephone’s seasonal ascent from the underworld awakens in her mother the impulse to again give life to the world. The cluster of gynomorphic figures contained by the crescent moon at the center of the painting refer to the balanced transformations of the lunar cycle and their mysteriously harmonic physical manifestation in the vital cycles of a woman’s body. At their axis is the cycloptical abdomen of the figure enthroned on the moon. The entire totem rises from a terrestrial gateway into an open landscape. In the background megaliths obscure the horizon. They represent a first boundary in time- the beginning of history. Below is the gateway, the opening to an inner earth...
