Located in Stockholm, Stockholm

View from Højbro Plads in Copenhagen on a winter day by Axel Möller (1862–1958), signed and dated “Axel Möller 26”, oil on canvas. The motif is taken from where Højbro Plads meets Højbro Bridge which connects with Slotsholmen Island over the Slotsholmen canal, the Nikolaj Kirke is rising in the background. In the foreground, two women wearing green skirts stand on the snow covered square. Several figures are crossing the bridge, and the church tower forms the central vertical element of the composition. The painting is presented in a contemporary gilded profiled wooden frame. Axel Möller was a Danish painter born in 1862 and active well into the 20th century. His work concentrated on urban environments, everyday street scenes, and the seasonal character of Copenhagen. The Great Things of Life-Travel, General Electric Advertisement, 1921

By Dean Cornwell

Located in Fort Washington, PA

Medium: Oil on Canvas Signature: Signed Lower Left Sight Size 36.00" x 34.00; Framed 43.75" x 41.75" "The Great Things of Life—Travel, Edison Mazda Lamps/General Electric advertisement" Signed and dated lower left: Dean / Cornwell / 21 Dean Cornwell's advertisements for companies like Coca-Cola, Palmolive Soap, and Philadelphia Blended Whiskey are as chock full of atmosphere and narrative drama as his magazine story illustrations. The present work graced one of eleven advertisements in ""The Great Things of Life"" series, commissioned by General Electric, which ran in monthly 1921 editions of The Saturday Evening Post. Each of these ads, designed by a different artist - among them, Arthur I. Keller, Elizabeth Shippen Green, Clarence F. Underwood, and Sarah Stillwell Weber -- suggested that the warmth of the Edison Mazda Lamp, or incandescent light bulb, went hand in hand with middle-class virtues and opportunities, including ""Reverence,"" ""Contentment,"" ""Gratitude,"" and ""Chums."" For ""Travel,"" Cornwell imaged a honeymooning couple disembarking from a car, about to enter a brightly illuminated inn: ""The Honeymoon Trail is a trail of Light -- Soft lights, orange blossoms, and solemn vows - A handful of confetti, laughing goodbyes and a porch--light smiling its happy farewell -- Bright headlights throwing their radiance over the road; and the lights of welcome in an old-fashioned inn -- So another couple sets forth on the honeymoon trail -- a trail that lingers in memory as long as life lasts, indelibly etched by the magic of light. We speak of life as a journey; have you ever stopped to think how much Edison Mazda Lamps contribute to the pleasure of the journey?"" (General Electric advertisement, The Saturday Evening Post, 1921). The present work is accompanied by three copies of the advertisement as featured in The Saturday Evening Post. " Dean Cornwell, born in 1862, was an American artist who was best known as a muralist and for his famous illustrations in national magazines including Harper's Bazaar, Redbook, and Cosmopolitan. He was born in Louisville, Kentucky and as a child observed his civil engineer father do industrial drawings, which led to his interest in art. Cornwell studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and built his career as a cartoonist for the Lousiville Herald and the Chicago Tribune. Cornwell illustrated the works of some of the most famous names in the literary world, including Edna Ferber, Ernest Hemingway, Pearl S. Buck, and Somerset Maugham. He also created murals for the 1939 World's Fair, Bethlehem Steel, and the General Motors Building in New York City. Cornwell's spectacular murals grace buildings...

"Moonlit River Scene", Early 20th Century Oil on Canvas by Luis Graner y Arrufi

By Luis Graner Y Arrufi

Located in Madrid, ES

LUIS GRANER Y ARRUFI Spanish, 1863 - 1929 MOONLIT RIVER SCENE signed and dated "L Graner 1925" (lower right) oil on canvas 20-1/8 x 30 inches (51 x 76 cm.) framed: 25-3/4 x 35-3/4 inches (65 x 90.5 cm.) PROVENANCE Private Collection, Barcelona, Spain Graner paints this work, Moonlit on the river, during his stay in the United States in the last stage of his artistic life, from 1910 to 1928, in full stage of maturity. This artwork reflects the constant search of the artist for the effects of light in his work. This persistent concern for light remains throughout his artistic life, which he learned in his Parisian stage under the influence of the painter Frances Platour. The silver light of the moon and the small lights at distance, which are tiny foci of artificial light, reflecting the river water, forming a chromatic range of greens, ocher and pearly that give a certain mystery to the composition, creating a modern approach to the landscape, by placing the two large trees at the edge of the river in the foreground Luís Graner y Arrufí, Spanish (1863–1929) was a Catalan painter in the Realistic style. He was born in Barcelona, and studied at the Escola de la Llotja from 1883, with Antoni Caba (color/composition) and Benet Mercadé (drawing). During his final year at school, he received a grant to study in Madrid, where he copied and learned from the Old Masters at the Museo del Prado. After that, supported by a fellowship, he moved to Paris and became a member of the Academie des Beaux-Arts. Later, he returned to Barcelona, but continued to travel to cities throughout Europe, including Berlin, Munich and Düsseldorf. Influenced by Richard Wagner's concept of "Gesamtkunstwerk" (Total Work of Art), he was motivated to create his own total art experience and organized the "Sala Mercè" (Mercy Hall) in Barcelona's Rambla District. The project involved contributors from every artistic discipline, including the new field of cinematography. The room was decorated by Antoni Gaudí. Other participants included Adrià Gual, Santiago Rusiñol, Ramon Casas...

ABOUT THE ARTIST Karl Michel (1889-1984) was a noted graphic designer and expressionist printmaker during Germany's pre-Nazi Weimar Republic (1919-1933). Michel’s work was the subject of a feature article in the influential German graphic design magazine Das Plakat (The Poster) in 1920. An anti-war advocate, Michel created a suite of 12 wood engravings depicting his impressions of the humanitarian toll of WWII entitled ‘Humanitas’ (Humanity). The German publishing house Greifenverlag published the series in a reduced folio of unsigned prints. Michel’s graphic work is held in the permanent collections of the Auckland War Memorial Museum (New Zealand), Frederikshavn Kunstmuseum & Exlibrissamling (Denmark), Museum of Applied Arts (Budapest), The Robert Gore Rifkind Center for German Expressionist Studies at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the German Expressionism...

This portrait of Fannie Hurst may have graced the cover of another major newsstand magazine. Most likely, it was a non-published alternate cover for Redbook. One of the most widely-read female authors was painted by one of the most widely-viewed female illustrators. Edna Crompton was an in-demand and prolific for-hire female illustrator/artist for some of the most prestigious newsstand magazines of the day. She regularly did covers for the Saturday Evening Post, Redbook, Colliers and Judge to name a few. Crompton presents Fannie Hurst - the nation’s highest-paid short story writer and advocates for suffrage and race relations - as a confidently attractive young woman bathed...
