Signed oil on canvas figures in landscape circa 1920 by English impressionist painter Dorothea Sharp. This incredible piece depicts bathers enjoying a day at the beach. In the foreground is a seated woman wearing a hat who is knitting or embroidering, and by her side a baby sleeps on a blanket in the shade of the rocks. Signature: Signed lower left Dimensions: Framed: 22"x26" Unframed: 14"x18" Provenance: Private collection - Australia Dorothea Sharp was a landscape, flower and figurative painter. She studied both in London and in Paris. Dorothea Sharp studied art in Richmond before joining London's Regent Street Polytechnic, where her teachers included David Murray and George Clausen. She also studied in Paris where she was introduced to the work of the Impressionists and in particular Claude Monet. She was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists (from 1907), the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (1922) and the Society of Women Artists (1908). She lived in London, working at studios in Maida Vale. In the 1920s and 1930s she travelled in France, Spain, Portugal and Italy. In 1928 she was appointed an honorary member of the St Ives Society of Artists and from 1940 to 1946 she settled in St Ives, where she produced many plein air paintings of beach scenes...

This lovely impressionist painting portrays what appears to be a family outing or picnic. There are many beautifully dressed women with their children in a park setting. Oddly, what appears to be missing are men, or their husbands. Perhaps it’s a women’s organization that included their young children. The scene must depict late spring or summer, given the foliage and their beautiful dresses. The colors are bright and cheerful and the late impressionist style is clearly evident. The artist appears to have signed the painting lower left, but it is very difficult to completely decipher. The date, 1925, seems to be clearer. All in all, this work is a one-of-a-kind period painting that will enhance any sophisticated room or setting. The frame is a soft lemon gold period cove frame that may be just a bit older than the work by about 10 years. This work has been recently professionally repaired, cleaned and varnished. Both the painting and the frame are in very good condition. There are a few professional repairs to the canvas, only visible from the patches shown on the backside. The frame has a few minor blemishes here and there, expected with its age. The canvas measures 18” x 22” and the overall framed dimensions are 24 1/2” x 28 1/2”. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Wells' early exposure to the arts came through church and community, where African American cultural traditions were central. He pursued formal artistic training at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania (earning a B.A. in 1924), followed by studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Barnes Foundation, where he encountered European modernists as well as traditional African sculpture, which profoundly influenced his style. Wells moved to New York in the late 1920s, swiftly immersing himself in the lively artistic and intellectual scene of Harlem. There, he became associated with artists, writers, and thinkers of the Harlem Renaissance, contributing to the growth of Black cultural identity.
