De Ruth, a native of Czechoslovakia and an American citizen, spent the years of World War II being shunted through five different concentration camps, including the infamous Auschwitz. He made four escape attempts and finally made good on his fifth try.
De Ruth constantly sought materials with which to draw, but "The only things we had were the few pieces of cloth we wore," he recalls. By chance, he was transferred to Germany as part of a labor detail and managed to sneak a pencil away from the camp supervisor. "I became a perfect thief during those years," he says. De Ruth drew a mother and child on a scrap of paper he scrounged from the factory where he worked and filled it in with shadings of coffee in various strengths-his finger was his brush. He exchanged the sketch for a piece of bread from a camp guard, and in effect, sold his first painting.
In March of 1945, after being transferred to his native Czechoslovakia, he made his successful escape "knowing every step of the way." After the war, De Ruth became the commissar in a small Czech town and remained in the post for one year, just long enough to forge some documents that allowed him to flee to England. He took up residence in London and enrolled at the Ruskin Art School in Oxford University. He arrived in the USA in 1948.

Joseph Barrett (1936 – )
Joseph Barrett was born in Midland, North Carolina, in 1936 and studied at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. Barrett, now of Lahaska, Pennsylvania, has been painting his entire adult life. His favorite subjects include the landscape surrounding New Hope and many local landmarks often encompassing figures into his compositions. About the Artist:
Raised where the East Coast suburbs filtered into the woods and farms, Scott Conary (Rhode Island School of Design, BFA ’93) creates expressive oil paintings with rich surfaces of everyday objects and places, often those with which we have complicated and ambiguous relationships. Pulled from their context, these objects say something about how we interact with the world and one another. These are stories of the arbitrary nature of beauty, of melancholy, of fleeting triumph, and the camouflage of time: the mess and splendor of the broken egg, the weed that fights to survive in the gaps of our attention, the weathered door used for generations but now forgotten, and so on.
Fueling and inspiring this work is his young daughter’s battle with complicated heart defects, her experiences with disability, and the impact this has had on those around her. This has directed his focus toward the narratives and tensions in the familiar, and is why he wanders deeper into the thicket of representational work.

Bold landscape line drawings by listed Maine artist Laurence Sisson (American, 1928-2015). In the top image, giant cumulous clouds hang over the desert plateaus of varying heights. In the bottom image, desert brush fill the foreground with rocky mountains and big clouds towering over. These drawings were likely preparatory sketches for larger paintings.
This piece is unsigned, but was acquired from David Sisson, the artist's son.
