Hunting played an essential role in the lives of princes and nobles for centuries. It was no different in the 17th century. Paintings depicting hunting scenes were hung, for example, in the hunting lodges of elites. It should be noted that the upper bourgeoisie also began to show interest in painted hunting scenes during the 17th century. In the Southern Netherlands there were a number of skilled animal painters who produced hunting scenes, including Frans Snijders, Paul De Vos, Jan Roos, Pieter Boel and Jan Fyt. Snijders knew how to render the anatomy of the animals masterfully. Also, he managed to make his animals look intelligent. He let them express a variety of feelings. His colleague, Paul De Vos, seems to have been less familiar with animal anatomy. His animals lack a kind of individuality and psychological expression. The panel shows a boar hunt with dogs. It was a prevalent theme, portrayed by Rubens, Snijders, De Vos and others. Buyers were especially interested in the showdown between animal species. The mental and physical strength appealed to their imagination. The painter of this little work has no solid knowledge of dog breeds. Due to a lack of insight into dogs' bone and muscle structure, he makes them look rather stiff. Mainly the heads have something naïve about them. Willem Muys was a Dutch, 18th-century painter of history pieces, portraits and cabinet pieces. Above all, he appears to have been active as a painter of ‘wallpaper’. Until the mid-18th century, ‘wallpaper’ was not painted on paper but on coarsely woven linen. Wealthy citizens had their mansions or country estates adorned with ‘wallpaper’ with landscapes, exotic birds or chinoiseries. Still Life with Large Vase and Cascade of Flowers in a Garden. Naples. Attributed to Gaspare Lopez. Neapolitan school , circa 1720. Not signed. This painting, part of a pair of Neapolitan still lifes from the early eighteenth century, displays several features closely associated with Gaspare Lopez, one of the most sought-after flower painters of his time. The monumental vase resting on the stone ledge, decorated with a lightly modelled human profile, reflects the Neapolitan Baroque taste for curious and theatrical ornamental details. From this vase descends a true cascade of flowers—a type of composition Lopez often arranged in bold, vertical structures, almost like floral capricci. His contemporaries aptly nicknamed him “Gaspare dei fiori”. The bouquet is abundant and varied: multiple varieties of roses, chrysanthemums, carnations, tulips, small wild blossoms and Lopez’s characteristic blue climbing bellflowers, painted with a clear and luminous touch. The chromatic range is bright, decorative and joyful, fully in line with the Neapolitan vitality of the period. The background presents an Italianate garden with cypresses, terraces and stone balustrades. This vocabulary closely echoes works preserved at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna (inv. GG 1658, 1662, 1664), all attributed to Lopez. Although larger in scale, those paintings share the same horizontal layout, similar bright skies and the same architectural elements paired with sweeping floral cascades. These parallels provide substantial support for the attribution. Lopez trained under Andrea Belvedere, the great Neapolitan late-Baroque flower painter. From him he inherited a refined botanical sensibility, luminous colour and a taste for scenographic compositions—qualities he later developed further while active between Naples, Rome and Florence. The following is submitted by Jim Lafferty whose sources include the autobiography of the artist: William Washington Messick married Sarah A. Bristow January 2,1889 and from this marriage a son, Benjamin Newton Messick was born on January 9, 1891 on a farm near Strafford, Missouri. His art talent was apparent from the time he was a child and later recognized by his commanding officer in World War I. He completed his training in Los Angeles at Chouinard in the late-1920s and is well-known for his Regionalist scenes and Modernist paintings. He was an instructor at Chouinard through the 1950s & influenced a generation of LA Modernists. Little is recorded in his autobiography about Messick's life from his teen years and service during the War. He enrolled at Chouinard Institute in the Fall of 1925, and was given a three-year scholarship by Mrs. Chouinard. In 1925 he won a cash award at the Los Angeles County Fair for a group of pen and charcoal drawings done in the parks and streets of Los Angeles. These works give the appearance of being spontaneous and fluid. In 1930 Messick left Chouinard as a full-time student and rented an apartment on West Eighth Street to use as a studio and living quarters. He had his own ideas on what he was trying to accomplish in art. "If you should ask what is the message of my drawings, I should say that they may explain themselves or may be just a technical exercise." By the mid 1940s, Messick's position in the art world had been well established as a teacher, painter, printmaker, writer and critic. Over his life time he had over 400 shows and exhibitions. Starting in 1939 he produced a number of stone lithographs that appear to the untrained eye as original drawings. To Messick the image was the most important aspect of his lithographs, and his signature in the plate was sufficient. Hand signing each lithograph did not seem necessary to him. He exhibited prints widely including the Albany Print Club and the Metropolitian Museum. To further substantiate the authenticity of Messick's prints the Eclectic Gallery under the authority of the Messick family posthumously pencil signed each estate-acquired stone lithograph. Messick had a childhood fascination with the circus and started drawing and painting the circus in 1935. His circus work, especially his clown studies, and his lithographs became his trademark work for in the 1940s and 1950s.
