Fine Antique British Botannical Watercolour Painting, circa 1900's

Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire

A very fine original antique English botanical watercolour painting depicting this beautiful depiction of a flower/ plant. The work came to us from a private collection in Surrey, England and had been part of an album of works assembled by the artist during the early 1900's. During the Victorian and Edwardian era in Britain, it was very fashionable for ladies of aristocratic and wealthy backgrounds to draw and paint still lifes of flowers and plants that they had picked or seen in gardens. Many were highly accomplished and extremely talented artists, who sadly were not encouraged to exhibit due to society frowning upon such activities. Artist/ School: Caroline Worsley...

Pierre-Louis Bouchard French, (1831-1889) Une Bonne Tasse de Thé Oil on canvas, signed Image size: 23 inches x 13.75 inches Size including frame: 35 inches x 25.75 inches A lovely portrait of a young woman pouring a cup of tea, by Pierre Louis Bouchard. The woman is depicted wearing a green striped dress with a white apron, whilst on her head is a mob cap decorated with a red ribbon. She is shown standing before a table containing a porcelain tea service on a silver salver. She is painted with her head turned towards the viewer as she expertly pours the tea into a cup. The mode appears similar to others figures the artist painted and could well have been the same person. Pierre Louis Bouchard was born Pierre-François Bouchard in Lyon on 2 May 1831 to Pierre Bouchard and Amelie Baron. In 1845, he began studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon where he was taught by Jean-Claude Bonnefond (1796-1860). He then moved to Paris where he became a pupil of Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904) at the Ecole des beaux Arts. He also studied under Jean-Hippolyte Flandrin...

Charles Jones was an animal painter who was born in Stepney, London in 1836. He was the son of the artist Samuel John Egbert Jones (1797-1861) and Dinah Jones. He lived with his parents and 9 siblings in Mile End and was a pupil of his father. In September 1859, he married Frances Rosalinda Downe, who was born in America. He also exhibited at the British Institution, Suffolk Street, New Watercolour Society, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. By 1867, he had become a successful artist and had moved to 7 Paragon Place, Brixton Hill. From 1874, he lived at Heathercroft, Balham Hill where he spent the rest of his life. As well as the major London galleries, he also exhibited provincially at various locations including: the Royal Cambrian Academy where he was elected a member in 1886, the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, Manchester City Art Gallery, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Birmingham and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. By Henry Schafer

Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire

**PLEASE NOTE: EACH PAINTING INCLUDING THE FRAME MEASURES 15 INCHES x 13 INCHES** Henry Schafer German/British, (1841-c.1914) Chartres, France & Metz, Lorraine Oil on canvas, pair, both signed Image size: 10 inches x 8 inches (each) Size including frame: 15 inches x 13 inches (each) A lovely pair of French townscape paintings featuring Cathedrals by Henry Schafer. The first offers a view of Metz Cathedral and other medieval buildings from the river Moselle. On the right, figures can be seen at a market stall whilst others walk down a street. Meanwhile to the left, a boat is shown docking at a quayside in front of an archway. The other painting is of Chartres Cathedral seen from a cobbled town square lined with Medieval buildings. Two figures are depicted next to a market stall on the left as others chat or make their way towards the square along a lane to the right. Henry Schafer was born in Hanover, Germany in 1841. Although little is recorded about his upbringing, he was known to have studied at the l'Ecole National de Beaux-Arts in Paris. After leaving art school, he travelled throughout Europe painting town scenes and buildings of Northern France, Belgium and Germany. By 1864, Schafer had travelled to England with his wife Theresa, to work in London where they settled and started a family. All four of their children were born in England. One of his daughters Emilie Anna Schafer (1871-1937) became a painter and art teacher. Around 1871, the family were living at 53 Vauxhall Bridge Road and in 1881 were recorded as residing at 6, Sophia Terrace, Beulah Road, Thornton Heath in Surrey, with Henry continuing to work as an artist. By 1891, he had moved to 7 St Peters Road in Islington where he lived for the rest of his life. Sometime around the turn of the century, he became a British subject. Schafer is believed to have died in London c1914. Many of his works depict the architecture of gothic cathedrals and churches, as in these two fine examples. He also produced interior studies of churches. Schafer's style resembles that of Alfred Montague...
