The Legacy of Diamond in Jewelry Design

Antique diamond rings, diamond tiaras and dazzling vintage diamond earrings are on the wish lists of every lover of fine jewelry. And diamonds and diamond jewelry are primarily associated with storybook engagements and red-carpet grand entrances — indeed, this ultra-cherished gemstone has a dramatic history on its hands.

From “A Diamond Is Forever” to “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend,” pop culture has ingrained in our minds that diamonds are the most desired, the most lasting and the most valuable gemstone. But what makes the diamond so special? Each stone — whether it’s rubies, sapphires or another stone — is unique and important in its own right. April babies might claim diamonds for themselves, but just about everyone wants this kind of sparkle in their lives!

There are several factors that set diamonds apart from other stones, and these points are important to our gem education.

Diamonds are minerals. They are made up of almost entirely of carbon (carbon comprises 99.95 percent; the remainder consists of various trace elements). Diamonds are the hardest gemstones, ranking number 10 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. Even its name, diamond, is rooted in the Greek adamas, or unconquerable. The only object that can scratch a diamond is another diamond. Diamonds are formed deep within the earth at very high temperatures (1,652–2,372 degrees Fahrenheit at depths between 90 and 120 miles beneath the earth’s surface) and are carried up by volcanic activity. Diamonds are quite rare, according to the Gemological Institute of America, and only 30 percent of all the diamonds mined in the world are gem quality.

In the 1950s, the Gemological Institute of America developed the 4Cs grading system to classify diamonds: clarity, color, cut and carat weight. Not all diamonds are created equal (there are diamonds, and then there are diamonds). The value of the diamond depends on the clarity (flawless diamonds are very rare but a diamond's value decreases if there are many blemishes or inclusions), color (the less color the higher the grade), cut (how the diamond’s facets catch the light, certain cuts of diamonds show off the stone better than others) and carat weight (the bigger, the better).

When you start shopping for a diamond engagement ring, always prioritize the cut, which plays the largest role in the diamond's beauty (taking the time to clean your diamond ring at least every six months or so plays a role in maintaining said beauty). And on 1stDibs, a range of buying guides can be found for those in the market for antique engagement ringsvintage engagement rings or Art Deco engagement rings

Finding the Right Stud-earrings for You

Stud earrings have a unique and rich cultural history. Though their design has evolved, vintage stud earrings are still a classic jewelry style.

Stud earrings are frequently dated back over 7,000 years to Asia, where they were worn mostly by upper-class men to indicate their wealth and status. Although earrings sometimes fell out of favor over the years — such as when ear piercing was prohibited by the Catholic Church in the 13th century — they’ve remained one of the most enduring forms of body modification.

When diamond jewelry gained prominence in the 19th century, thanks to prosperity in Europe and the United States as well as the greater accessibility of gemstones, studs adorned with fine diamonds became popular. Screw-back earrings debuted in the late 19th century and allowed people without pierced ears to don the embellishment. Stud earrings became especially popular in the 1960s.

Stud earrings are simple and usually small in size, making them lightweight and easy to wear. Unlike other earrings, stud earrings have a floating appearance. They are often made with a single gemstone, such as a sapphire or emerald, and a straight post that goes through the ear, typically with a rubber or metal backing to hold it in place.

Today, stud earrings accentuate outfits with a casual, elegant style, adding a bit of glam to any ensemble. Find an eclectic array of stud earrings on 1stDibs.

Questions About Vvs2 Diamond Studs
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 1, 2023
Whether two-carat diamond studs are too big is a matter of personal preference. At this size, each earring will be one carat. If you opt for the classic round brilliant cut, the studs will typically measure around 6.5 millimeters in diameter, which is a little more than half the size of a dime. Find a wide range of diamond stud earrings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2021
A VVS1 diamond has imperfections that are so small that they can't be detected with 10x magnification (a jeweler's loupe). VVS1 diamonds are eye-clean, with no blemishes or inclusions visible to the naked eye. Shop a collection of vintage and modern VVS1 diamond rings from some of the world’s top jewelers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
A VVS diamond, or a Very, Very Slightly included category diamond has minute inclusions that are difficult to see under a 10x magnification, meaning it is close to flawless. It is a higher grade of diamond than a VS diamond.
  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 28, 2021
A VVS diamond ring price is based on the cut quality, color, shape and carat weight. These types of diamonds are among the highest and most expensive diamond clarity grades. The average price of a 1-carat VVS diamond ring is $5,500. On 1stDibs, you can find a variety of diamond rings from different periods and styles to choose from.
  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 28, 2021
The VVS1 diamond price ranges from $1,000 for a 0.50 Carat diamond to $18,000 for a 1.9-carat diamond. The price of any diamond, including that of a VVS diamond, depends on the cut, color, shape, and carat weight. The “VVS1” marking depends on the grade of clarity of the diamond. Shop an exquisite range of antique and vintage VVS1 diamond jewelry on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 14, 2023
There is no single most popular diamond stud shape, as trends change from season to season and people's tastes vary. When comparing diamond studs, choose a shape that appeals to you. There are many options to choose from, including round, oval, pear and heart. Shop a large collection of diamond stud earrings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 1, 2023
The average size of a diamond stud is 0.50 carats. With these earrings, each stud features a 0.25-carat diamond. You can also find diamond studs as small as 0.25 carats and as large as 2 carats or more. Explore a diverse assortment of diamond stud earrings from some of the world's top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 1, 2023
The best available clarity for diamond stud earrings is FL or flawless. FL diamonds are very rare and sell for the highest prices. Diamonds with clarity ratings of SI2 and higher may appear to be flawless once set due to their size. Explore a wide variety of diamond stud earrings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertDecember 12, 2023
What size diamond studs are too big is largely a matter of personal opinion. Most experts recommend choosing studs with a total carat weight of 0.25 to 1 for work and everyday wear, but larger studs can make a bold statement for nights out and special occasions. Keep in mind that the larger your earrings are, the heavier they will feel and the more of your earlobe they will conceal. On 1stDibs, find a wide variety of diamond stud earrings.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2023
Yes, color matters in diamond studs, as it impacts their value and price. To rate color, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) uses a scale ranging alphabetically from D to Z. A D-grade diamond is completely colorless and is very rare. Most studs featuring diamonds with ratings will have at least a faint yellow tint. Find a variety of diamond stud earrings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2023
How many prongs diamond studs should have depends on the size of the diamonds. Three-prong settings allow more of the gemstone's surface to remain visible and work best for diamonds that are less than 1.5 carats in weight. Ideal for diamonds ranging from 0.5 to 2 carats, four-prong settings have an attractive, symmetrical appearance and are very secure. For the largest diamonds, six- and eight-prong settings are often the best choice. On 1stDibs, shop a large collection of diamond stud earrings.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 5, 2023
The best cut of diamond for stud earrings is a matter of personal opinion. Brilliant cut diamonds can produce ample sparkle and often have a timeless appearance, while step cuts highlight color and clarity. Mixed cuts can make for unique looks to set you apart from the crowd. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of diamond earrings from some of the world’s top sellers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 14, 2023
Most experts agree that a prong setting is best for diamond stud earrings. Prongs help keep diamonds securely in place. Three-prong settings allow for more of the diamond to remain visible, while four-prong settings may be slightly more secure. For diamond stud earrings with weights of 2 carats or more, a six- or eight-prong setting can increase stability and security. Explore a large selection of diamond stud earrings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 27, 2023
Whether half-carat diamond studs are too small is a matter of personal opinion. A pair of diamond studs with a total carat weight of 0.5 usually consists of two 0.25-carat earrings. Many jewelry makers offer studs as small as 0.13 carats, so many people consider half-carat diamond studs to be medium-sized. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of antique and vintage diamond stud earrings.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 6, 2023
The best color available for diamond stud earrings is D. Only the finest colorless diamonds receive this rating. E and F diamonds are also highly ranked. People rarely view stud earrings up close when you're wearing them, so G, H, I and J-rated diamonds are also likely to appear colorless once set. Explore a large selection of diamond stud earrings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertJanuary 23, 2024
There are no hard-and-fast rules about what size diamond studs are for everyday wear. Many people choose studs with total carat weights of 0.25 to 1 carat for work and casual occasions. However, smaller and larger studs are also available. Consider your own preferences and select the size that appeals most to you. On 1stDibs, shop a diverse assortment of diamond stud earrings.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 14, 2023
Diamond stud earrings largely remain popular year after year. They are so timeless and indispensable that many people upgrade the size of their diamond studs every few years or to celebrate key milestones. Whether you start out with a one-carat total weight pair for your Sweet 16 or treat yourself to a five-carat total weight later in life, diamond studs deliver the perfect amount of sparkle every time you put them on. Find a diverse assortment of diamond stud earrings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 27, 2023
Yes, diamond studs can generally be worn every day. They're versatile enough to coordinate with casual and office outfits, but they can just as easily be dressed up for a big night out. To help your earrings stand the test of time, remove diamond studs before swimming, showering or engaging in any activities where they might get bumped or caught on something. In addition, follow the care and maintenance instructions provided by their maker. On 1stDibs, shop a large collection of diamond stud earrings.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2023
While diamond studs don't need to be GIA-certified to be sold, experts typically recommend that you only purchase diamonds that carry certification from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) or Authentic Gem Security Lab (AGSL). Certifications bring transparency to the buying process, allowing you to know the level of quality of a diamond before you purchase it. Shop a collection of vintage and modern diamond gemstone earrings from some of the world’s top jewelers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2023
Yes, the cut matters for diamond stud earrings because it guides their appearance and shape. The round brilliant cut is a classic option with its tremendous sparkle and symmetrical shape. Other brilliant cuts to consider include the oval, marquise, radiant and princess cuts. Stepped cuts like the emerald and cushion show off diamonds' color and clarity more than their sparkle. Explore a large selection of diamond stud earrings on 1stDibs.
